Sparky's winter/spring/summer/autumn work

Re: Sparky's winter/spring work

What are you going to use to underseal the car now to ensure it lasts another 30 odd years ?

Re: Sparky's winter/spring work

If you're using it as a show / weekend car, and it's stored in the garage then I'd be tempted to leave it un-undersealed, except maybe the wheel arches, just apply plenty of the best paint finish you can (maybe a splash of waxoil / dinitrol), that way you don't end up in the same situation with rot hidden by underseal, you can inspect regularly and sort out any issues quickly.

Re: Sparky's winter/spring work

Nice work. You're well on the way to being finished welding, you should be justly proud of your efforts. I've done my project underbody with a urethane based crinkly-ish finish product called Teroson. Looks nice, but I haven't reassembled my project yet so it hasn't seen any rain!

Re: Sparky's winter/spring work

Thanks all

I have some rust prevention stuff from a company called rust busters - http://www.rust.co.uk

I met them at the Stoneleigh restoration show last year.

I have some FE-123 rust convertor for all surface rust and as a pre spray treatment for vulnerable box sections.

I have some Epoxy Mastic 121 - a paint despite its name, which I will be using as a first coat on all vulnerable areas in black, then the whole of the underside in a sand colour. Then a couple of good coats of a satin black paint to finish off with.

Then I have some Dinitrol Mil-Spec 3215 to spray into all cavities I can find - and I have a diagram to show me where they all are on the P6.

So hopefully have got that bit covered 8)

Re: Sparky's winter/spring work

It's another milestone day.

I have finished making repair panels and have welded them all in, just a couple of holes to weld up on the inner wings (drilled for something no longer there, not rust) but that can wait.

No pics yet, but I am having to leave Sparky alone for a couple of weeks now.

Next job is to finish removing underseal, treat any surface rust then on with the epoxy.

Then it's just Dinitrol treatment, and put it back together. 8)

Re: Sparky's winter/spring work

Looking Good Richard!

BTW do you know about the new rules re restoration / metal replacement?

If you replace more than 10% of the vehicle you need to apply for a 'Q' Registration....

LOL

I don't think it will be anything like that much Peter.

How on earth would you work that out anyway?

Sorry Peter, I meant how do you know if you have replaced 10% of the metal. Who is going to weigh it and decide on the percentage renewed. And does that include bolt on metal like wings, etc?

Re: Sparky's winter/spring work

Thinking about the spirit of the law rather than the letter of the law - this is probably trying to catch complete reshells rather than extensive repairs...

Re: Sparky's winter/spring work

Well, I have finished removing the underseal, what a job that was

I was tempted to leave some of it as it looked ok and I had a good idea of what was vulnerable. Until I scraped the diff crossmember and discovered that it was almost completley covered in surface rust.

a101_0034.jpg

The inside of the chassis rails and the bump stops were also pretty bad

a101_0070.jpg

along with other areas including boot floor, chassis rails either side of the boot, rear spring seats, small areas around the front spring seats, the join between the hockey stick and inner wing, and in and around the headlamp recesses.

a101_0079.jpg

a101_0088.jpg

The area around and behing the headlamps was a nightmare to clean so

a101_0080.jpg

against my better judgement I got the sand blaster out and made a right mess of my garage  Still it did clean up the areas very well

a101_0094.jpg

a101_0089.jpg

I'll be rubbing this lot down to get a better finish but had to get some paint on fairly quickly to stop it rusting

a101_0095.jpg

a101_0096.jpg

All of the vulnerbale areas are now rust free and coated with a thick coat of Epoxy. I will be coating the entire underside with another coat soon, then spraying it with a Satin black finish.

a101_0098.jpg

Then its rub down under the bonnet, spray with the satin black and dinitrol the lot.

Soon be putting it back together :D

Not too fast, I hope. I still need to find enough space so that I can bid on your stand-thingy when you're done with it! ;)

Wow! I'm thoroughly impressed with the level of strip and refurb you've done to Sparky.

Cracking job! What's the estimate for having him back on the road?

Dave

Re: Sparky's winter/spring work

This has turned into a thorough and excellent restoration, top work. As I said earlier, I think you've caught it just in time to stop that surface rust.

Will be interesting to see how well the epoxy lasts, although I suspect I may have to wait a very long time !

You'll soon be putting it back together, always the best bit. :D

P.s. What technique have you used to remove the underseal ? Heat and scrape ? Also what sort of sand blaster have you used ?

I’ll give you the nod when I’m ready Chris. I may still owe you some money from the spoilers. Anyone want a set of Police Style spoilers :?:

Cheers dave - the last estimate was 1st April 2010 :? I think that may have gone  so I am not going to make any more.

Thanks Richard, I am certainly glad that I have done this now as that surface rust was looking to start burrowing soon. I do miss driving it though.

I used a heat gun to remove the underseal, then scraped it with a chisel. With my shoulder playing up I had to go down a size and ended up using a ½” chisel. Then sprayed it with a thickened delelamine solvent which takes ages to evaporate, so it stays in contact with the residue for a long time turning it into a liquid. For the last smear, I wiped it over with a solvent soaked cloth. Took a while

The sandblaster was a cheapy off ebay. Cost about £18.00 IIRC.

Re: Sparky's winter/spring work

quattro,

I'd kiss your toes for those spoilers, but it will cost more than the purchase price to get them to me in Cape Town

I would be eternally grateful if you could photograph them from all angles with a ruler for reference, a-la-CSI so I can try to make some up here. I'll buy you a beer when I make it back to UK. :D

If you're willing, I will pm you my e-mail address for the pics.

Cheers,

John

Re: Sparky's winter/spring work

Hi Unstable Load aka John
You can get new reproduction 'Police style' front spoilers from Alan at Classeparts. They don't weigh all that much, I wouldn't have thought postage to Cape Town would cost the earth.
Sorry to go off-topic.
Lookin' good Quattro. Keep at it. I stopped giving estimates for swhen my project will be finished too. All good things take time.

Richard

PS thanks for the comments - it is certainly getting there now :)

Re: Sparky's winter/spring work

I only wish I has the patience to do what your doing!
Excellent job! :) 8)
Will be the most rust free P6 on the road bar none when its finished!
And having a detailed photo log of work done, only adds to its value!
I am very tempted to take the body off my TR6 this winter and give the chassis and suspension a good going over,if only to clean and paint it all up!!
