Sparky's winter/spring/summer/autumn work

Re: Sparky's winter work

Had a go at fitting the spinner today.

The rear brackets were a bit long :?
100_8496.jpg

Not quite sure what happened there but I had to cut them off and re-drill the holes.
100_8498.jpg

Then the cross bar didn't match up :(
100_8500.jpg

Took a while but I finally got there
100_8502.jpg

The front one went better but the bolt holes were 8.7mm and the bolts were around 9.6mm. Broke two drill bits drilling four holes  Never did get the hang of that. Then spent over an hour trying to get the bracketry to line up, before realising that I had them upside down.

Just need some more wood to sit the back end on when I get the back axle out, before seeing how well it spins. 8)

Had look at the new bit of rust on the N/S front splash panel and found that it was a badly applied plate someone had welded to the supposed unwelded base unit.

Been there! Looks like your winter work has snowballed into a more involved project than you initially envisaged. I know that feeling! I'm envious of your Rotisserie. I spent far too long under my project removing old underbody seal, without the benefit of a device to roll it over. I'm sure it will make life much easier for you. I hope it all progresses faster for you than it has taken me!
Are your exhaust headers separated from your engine at the moment? Lots of pictures sufficient to give an exhaust maker to fabricate some more would be really helpful, as would a shot of how your engine mount was modified to provide clearance, all of which will be easier with an empty engine bay. Sorry to be a pain in the a**e!

Re: Sparky's winter work

Here you go Mr task

I will take a photo of the mount tomorrow, but should warn you that this was done badly on my car and the mount actually collapsed as too much metal had been taken away. The edge that was removed is supposed to turn downwards at 90 degrees to form a part box for extra strength. This was not replaced and caused a weak point which just buckled.

Re: Sparky's winter work

Thanks very much for the header photos, aren't they sexy!? I can't afford a pair at the moment, but with these pics for reference I can ask a couple of exhaust fabricators to quote for making up a set. In the future I definitely want to upgrade the engine. Who made them again? I remember you saying they were already on Sparky when you bought the car.

These people made them - http://www.jpexhausts.co.uk/Site/Transporter.htm but RPI http://www.v8engines.com/ sell them.

RPI told me that they fit without modifications, then passed me to another person who told me how to modify my car to get them to fit.

Go figure that one

Re: Sparky's winter work

Engine mount mods for Mr Task :)

Standard mount - N/S

You can see how this one has been cut O/S

I will be strengthening that before I put the engine back in

Back end out, and up on the spinner

Bit of rust here

Just get that underseal off - D'oh!!

This is a lot worse than I thought it would be :(

This is the doorstep

Oh well, better get on with it.

Re: Sparky's winter/spring work

OK so there's rust where the underseal has lost adhesion but where it hasn't the paint has survived quite well
I do admire people who strip their cars to a shell - it must be nice to have a garage that big but the pile of parts removed must take up some space?

Re: Sparky's winter/spring work

...errr, was the doorstep.
You've had a right old steam-in today haven't you Richard! I hate i when you have a little poke with a screwdriver and the visible flaky patch turns out to be about 1/10th the size of the hole lurking beneath. You're doing the right thing stopping the rot before it gets terminal and repairing the car. Don't get disheartened and demoralised, your perseverance will reward you in the end. Thanks for the detail shots of the 'massaged' engine mount, or what is left of it! Yeah, I reckon you could beef that back up a bit, eh? Happy easter weekend, don't spend it all in the garage.

Aint that always the case.

I've a feeling mine would be the same if I stripped it back that far. It's had a rough time throught the harsh winter we've just come through.

Keep up the good work. I can't wait for the opportunity......and the resources too have a good strip down of mine. Have to wait til I've got a garage though.

Hope that's the worst of it for you.

Cheers

I second that...

Re: Sparky's winter/spring work

Panels are back from the dippers, all clean and e-coated
100_8617q.jpg

One side of the floor now free from underseal
100_8634q.jpg

Which unfortunately uncovered some more problems. This patch, although very nicely welded was welded over existing rust.
100_8633q.jpg

100_8631q.jpg

I have removed all of the rust by chopping it out as well the bitumen pad bonded to the inside of the floor.
100_8640q.jpg

100_8638q.jpg

Made up 4 panels and nearly finished welding them in - Dr Who come on the telly so had to leave it unfinished

One corner nearly finished - 3 to go :?

Re: Sparky's winter/spring work

The panels look great! Where did you get them done, and for how much if you don't mind me asking..?

Surface processing at Dudley did all 14 panels for £1,200 + vat.

Bit pricey but they are left completely clean with no paint, no underseal and more importantly no rust. The paint is an E-coating which is electrically attracted to the panel like paint on modern cars, so they shouldn't ever rust agin

We will see )

Sparky now the Company car??

Stunning work btw...

Re: Sparky's winter/spring work

Most people would have left that patch welded over the rust , I suspect. It looks quite good from below

Do you need special paint primers over your e-coated panels ?

Haven't the foggiest Dave :?

I can do most things with cars but painting is something I never actually mastered, so the panels will go off to a spray shop. They know it has been e-coated as I have been discussing everything with them. I will be coating the back of them all with an epoxy prior to painting them, but they will do the final work.

The epoxy works very well over e-coating btw - I checked that first 8)

Re: Sparky's winter/spring work

Been having a play

If anyone tells you that removing the underseal is not too hard a job, give them a slap  Found some rust which was just getting hold, just starting to pit the surface, but not perforating. One bit where the outer front bumper bracket bolts on, one bit just behind the inner bracket bolt holes on the underside of the chassis rail, and one bit just to the left of where the spring sits in the bulkhead.

100_8676.jpg

Chiselled the seal retainer off the rear step, cleaned all of the paint and rust off and thankfully it was only surface rust with only minor pitting. Treated the pitting with a rust convertor, fitted new seal retainer and quick paint - job's a good'un :)

100_8684.jpg

Underside of inner wing drain channel and hockey stick rot

100_8673.jpg

Chopped it out, and welded in a new bit to form the underside.

100_8687.jpg

Made up a new section

100_8688.jpg

Welded it in

100_8689.jpg

Clean up and paint - very pleased with the way that came out

100_8691.jpg

All welding a rust treatment now sorted on the front N/S. One corner down, three to go 8)
