Sparky's winter/spring/summer/autumn work

Re: Sparky's winter work

By the way Richard, how did you get on pulling the engine out, did you seperate the box, or jack it up at the back ?

Re: Sparky's winter work

Hi Mr Task

All been removed but I took some photos as this lot won't be in the manual - how about this

And one for Richard 8) - box is still on there btw. Next time I do this I will need a helper to stand next to me with a megaphone just to mention the *&^%&( earth strap!!

Ermmm... no thank you - I am a carb man.

I have too many electronic gismos on the Audi. The Rover is for those nostalgic memories of old times when you could fix your car on the side of the road using a 9/16 spanner and an old bottle top.

Re: Sparky's winter work

Good job, had to chuckle at the earth strap, you always forget something, I usually forget the gear linkage on 800's

Re: Sparky's winter work

Nice one Richard...things are looking good!

And no...not jealous at all about your lovely, under cover garage to work in! :) Keep going mate...and plenty of pics please.

And for Al in Germany by way of supplementation....

Re: Sparky's winter work

Hi,

Was Sparky (funnily enough the same name as my sons cat?) an Auto in a previous life? This whole clutch master cylinder area looks quite non-standard or at least not like any of the pictures I found when doing my Auto – Manual conversion? Do you retain the reserve fuel tank valve as I don’t see it in any of the pictures?

Thanks

Tim

Re: Sparky's winter work

Hi Tim

Sparky's electrical system was a nigthmare when I bought him, so thats how he got his name.

Yes it was originally an Auto and the reserve switch now resides under the fuel tank before the electric fuel pump, so I still have a reserve.

I didn't actually do the conversion so only took the photos to ensure I put it back together correctly

Re: Sparky's winter work

Thanks very much for the photos, Quattro and Vaultsman. Now I can actually see how it all goes together! Looks like there are a couple of bits of bracketry I'll need to get fabricated if I do undertake an auto-to-manual swap.
The best of luck with your restoration Richard. Looks as if you have a fairly solid candidate for a rebuild there, not as bad as some of the horror corrosion I've seen on mine and other cars!

Re: Sparky's winter work

Bit slow with this at the moment as all I seem to be able to do is chip off the underseal - and that is a great fun job

There is a lot of it too - up to 3/4" in places

100_8359.jpg

And its holding on to water now and allwing Sparky to rot away underneath
100_8436.jpg

So it all has to come off :?
100_8435.jpg

Started cutting out the rotten bits, this is a double skin bit from the inner wing to the hockey stick, so will have a bit of fun rebuilding it
100_8437.jpg

And bear in mind that this is the first attempt of welding after some 20 years (I can't remember the last time so it may be more)
100_8432.jpg

Quite a bit done under here and a quick blow over with primer to stip it rotting away while I am not looking

Re: Sparky's winter work

Haven't done much but have at last managed to get the N/S front suspension out.

Thought I would tap around the area with a hammer handle to see if there was any rust hiding under the black stuff.
100_8452.jpg

Tried out some of the satin black
100_8453.jpg

Two wings were supplied with the car but both have their own small problems. The yellow one has some rust and the green one had a wing mirror hole - my first welding attempt :?

Things should start moving better now 8)

Re: Sparky's winter work

After a good check of the panels, I chose the best ones took them to get them stripped and electropherically coated today

When I bought Sparky, he came with four solid wings, a new front vallance and a good N/S front door. Sparky's N/S rear wing was better than the replacement so was kept.

So with 9 original and 5 replacement panels, the major part is now underway. All the panels go in the back of an A6 estate btw

It seems to have taken a lot of time to get to this stage, but the panels had to be completely stripped and those doors were great fun :?

They do strip complete vehicles here but the hassle of stripping the base unit completely, and then getting it onto a trailer, dragging to Dudley and back, was just a bridge too far.

Re: Sparky's winter work

Hello Richard,

Sparky's coming along quite well....the satin black looks good.

Are you going to keep the Lunar grey?

Ron.

Don't know Ron

Still hopping from one foot to the other. One has Lunar written on it, the other - Monza.

I will have to make the final decision in about three weeks time.

I have just had a jig made up to spin the car over so that I can get all of that underseal off from underneath. Will also do all the underside welding of course, so will be having a bit of fun with that later 8)

Re: Sparky's winter work

I actually prefer Lunar.

Rolling it over will be fun, looks like this has turned into a full restoration !

Re: Sparky's winter work

I've always liked Lunar :)
As a painter I'd never choose to own a red car due to matching the colour if it gets marked  in saying that I've ended up with 3

Think of all those petrol pump conversations you'd miss out on 'What a nice green Rover mister!'

Be cool to see your jig in action :)

It's not that kind of website ![/quote]

I was going to try and erect it over the weekend

Anyhoo

Yes it is, but it was never supposed to be.

Unfortunately, the underseal was hiding more than I thought it was. 'Never welded, rot free' - yeah right  .

Both ends of both sills are rotted through. Not badly, but enough to make the repair quite complicated. The driver's floor is holed, both rear wheel arches need work, there is a small rust hole in the back of the upper D post, and the inner wing channel is rotted through on both sides along with the hockey stick under it.

So not much really, but it does mean that all of the underseal has to come off if I am ever to be confident of catching the tin worm before it gets too firm a grip. I have found that there is no cavity protection on it even though I was informed that it had been dinitrolled (is that a word?) So it's a case of removing underseal, cutting out and welding up all of the little rotten bits, resealing it with an epoxy, and treating it all with dinitrol. As most of it is underneath I have had a jig made to fit the P6B. Will be for sale after I have finished with it 8)
