BW65 oil level

Thanks for the comments guys . Chris York ," needs must " as i said earlier :D
As for parts we haven't got that far yet !
JVY , that torque wrench , not sure i trust that type , i have a rather nice draper one with a vernier adjustment . Not sure it goes down enough for some of the jobs on the gearbox though so may have to trust the pointer :?

Stina,

I bought my box recon kit (inc seals and clutches etc.) from JPAT. They even did me a nice recon torque convertor - definitely worth considering if you are that far along the line.

Hi ,
Harvey is going to recommend a supplier when we get to that stage , and yes i'll do what needs doing while i'm in there .
I was looking for a filter a while ago and that looks like the place he recommended though  :D

Update Boys and Girls .
Up and running again .
The symptoms were , no drive in the forward gears . ( had to reverse home prior to parking up and deciding what to do )
After a diagnostic session with Harvey and him telling me my options ,i decided to go for a repair as best i could carry out myself , as oppose to a full professionally rebuilt transmission .
Anyhoo , some pictures .
gearbox001.jpg

That should be a pic of the box on the floor after me and Pa wrestling it out , heavy  :D
Then to clean it up and lay it out on the bench , By now i'm knackered !!!
gearbox002.jpg

Pulled it apart , took a few pics , easy to get lost with the pipe layout in the valve block .
gearbox003.jpg

There was plenty of evidence of failure inside the box .
Front clutch friction
gearbox010.jpg

Rear frictions and steals .
gearbox009.jpg

Front band , Totally burnt out !
gearbox014.jpg

Any hoo . Ordered up some bits ( http://www.jpat.co.uk/ )
Totally spot on guys , ( Then they do come from down here :D )
Any hoo , bits , who don't love new Stuff !!!
gearbox16.jpg

Chucked it all in , shook it all about and it works ,
( more to it than that lap top startin to shut down
Sent the front and rear clutches off the Harvey to install the piston seals ( Specialist tools required )
Got a full set of forward and backwards ,
Got to give Harvey a Massive thank you for all the help .
It's not something i'd do for fun , But it's been an amazing learning curve .

Have a go ,
Why not ?
Just nuts , bolts and some left over washers

Oh yeah .
Did the rear crank oil seal while the box was out
crankseal002.jpg

Looking back and hoping i removed that lump of rag from the oil pick up

Edit , Few more pics
Rear servo , cleaned out .
gearbox17.jpg

Loads of burnt friction material hidden all over the box .
Worth getting to and cleaning out as much as possible while it's apart .
The rebuilt box just before stuffing it back where it came from . At a guess i would say 150 lbs , dry .
Only a guess ,had planned to weigh it , but stuffing it back whence it came , while i had the chance took precedence .

Hi Stina,

That is really amazing the way you get stuck into things, totally unphased about what may lay ahead. Three big cheers to you :D

What was the reason behind the front band being completely worn out? Were the clutches also worn out?

Ron.

Rich
Yes have a go if ever you need to ( hopefully not ) Keeping everything clean is important , As is keeping it all in order .

Ron .
I don't know the reason for the failures , other than the condition of the seals not good . Maybe a few issues added up to the problem . Yes the clutches were burnt out , The pic of them in line is the rear clutch , the one on it's own is from the front set , don't seem to have a pic of the whole front set .

Good job Stina! I bet that's a satisfying feeling
I've a sneaking suspicion my rear band is as bad as your front one was
I cured my reverse issue for a day after changing the rear servo seal and piston, but it didn't last long.
I've not had any time to investigate any further yet unfortunately :?
How much did you end up spending on parts if you don't mind me asking?
Jim

Hi Jim .
Full set of clutch friction plates and steel plates for front and rear clutches ,
Diaphragm spring
front and rear brake bands
filter
180 quid from JPAT
The seal and gasket kit i already had was 30 quid .
With fluid and the rear crank seal postage and bits and pieces it came in around 300 quid

:D Well done Stina & hope you now get many miles of transmission trouble free motoring.

Hi Harvey .
When i fitted the bands and adjusted them , not having the proper tool i rigged up a bit of a Heath Robinson affair with a torque wrench and spanner . Been looking for something better to set the tension on them now it's all up and running , Can't find the original tools any where on the net . What about this in the right size :?:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/15PC-CROW-FOO ... 4d03628f69
The 8mm one is the correct size :?:
Stina

That should work. Another way is to make a spanner using flat plate with a hole 12" from the centre of the adjuster and use a spring balance to pull 5lb at 90 degrees at that hole, or as access isn't great, make the spanner shorter, have the hole 6" from the adjuster, and pull 10lb. Then back off the required amount.

You're unlikely to find the proper tools.

Evening all .
Harvey , i did a good few miles saturday . The box feels fine ,the engagment of gears feels good and it feels like it's doing as it should . On a light throttle test it changes up 1 to 2 at just under 10 mph and 2 to 3 at about 14/18 mph Roughly what it says in the manual . The other tests i don't really want to put it through , ie holding kick down , kicking down at high revs etc . The kick dowhn works fine BTW . What i'd like to know is where it should change up during normal driving . I feel it holds onto the gears a little longer than it did before . Maybe it's closer to how it should of been before :?:
I was going to crawl under it this afternoon and check the band adjustment but the snow put me off a little :?

I'd say that if in normal driving you feel that it's shifting up late, and that you want to lift off the throttle to prompt the upshift, then the chances are that the pressures are a little too high. If that's the case you can bring them down a bit if you want, so the shift speeds are still within the speed range in the WM, (but at the lower end) and it still has kickdown, then that should be no problem. I'd make sure the band adjustment is correct before doing anything though. (Even though the rear band won't have any effect on the shifts in forward drive, and the front band only on SECOND).

Hi Harvey .
Today i clocked up 500 miles since the doing all the work . Can i uncross my fingers , toes , legs etc yet please :?: :D
All seems o.k , only thing i could question is a " sometimes " harsh change from 1 into 2 , usually when it's cold , on a light throttle . If your pushing on a bit it's dead smooth . When it's warmed up it's fine .
What do we reckon ?
Stina :D

No, not yet, I'd say at aound 500 thousand you should be in the clear......

I don't think I'd be overly concerned, but if you wanted things to look for I'd say make sure the kickdown cable isn't a bit sticky, that's the easiest thing that could cause an intermittant problem of that sort, but if it's not happening all the time then it's a bit more difficult to pin down. There are quite a few things it could be, but I'd be inclined to live with it for now if it's only happening now and again, and only look into it further if it happens all the time and you find you can't (or don't want to) live with it.
