Re: P6 project: BW35 to LT77 manual box swap: the verdict

Re: P6 V8 project: Winter work/rust repair etc

Hi Truck Doctor!

No problem & good to hear from you, nice repair work on the P5, is it a coupe to Saloon you own?

I have ordered my wheels from Tim at Raceways in Donington: http://www.raceways.co.uk/American_Wheels.htm
Look under Cragar classic American Wheels for your choice. He is very helpful & buys direct from Cragar themselves in USA. What size would you go for? I reckon 16~17" would look really nice.

Cheers Damian

Re: P6 V8 project: Winter work/rust repair etc

Hi Damion, yes it is a coupe the third so far and the rustiest (was) but now all the welding is complete it's time for the best bit, finding some nice wheels. Thats a good link and I'll be in touch with them soon. I see Cragar now do polished wheels, the last time i had cragars thay had chrome plated spokes and that chrome duly peeled off after the first winter, though with polished wheels they will stay nice. These were unilug fitment which I think they don't make any more, it was 27 years ago! when flared arches were the fashion. Here's a picture of the arches being built up.
arches.jpg

Hopefully now 17x7 will fit under the arches with no mods, but it depends on the backspace of the new wheels. When you ordered your new wheels did you have a choice of backspace/ offset/ PCD etc?
The wheels you have ordered look very smart and will suite your p6 very well, do you know if they will fit or are body mods required?

Re: P6 V8 project: Winter work/rust repair etc

Hi there, sorry for late reply, Check this link to Cragar details, third one down are my wheels ordered, part # 500P575042.
http://www.cragar.com/ProductView.aspx? ... =%3fc%3d15
I think the back space depends on the chosen width, mine is 4" from memory, bascially 7x15" gives you 4" either side for an overall width, hope this helps, Tim at raceways will be able to give more detailed info depending on what you order & size required, I guess if you can give him an idea of what space you have then he can give you a better idear of what can fit !
here's more updated pics of the weld 'a' thon, nearly there! cheers Damian

Re: P6 V8 project: Winter work/rust repair etc

Hi Everyone,

Few updated pics, getting there, Am aiming for end of April for MOT, Hey guess what ??? still havent received my alloys,
They are on a slow boat from China to Cragar in the US (no really its true  ) then Raceways will air freight them to the UK..Hey ho! Still by the time they arrive I should have fitted the suspension back together !

Quick progress, neat welding and looking good!

Re: P6 V8 project: Winter work/rust repair etc

I gotta say how I am constantly surprised (more like stunned) how you Poms dont seem to bat an eyelid when tackling rust like this!!
Here in Australia, unless the car was seriously valuable, most people would have a quiet heart attack and just walk away.
You guys just go "oh yeah...normal" and then proceed to weld yourselves silly.
A friend of mine recently gave me a 1974 3500, and after stripping it down, the sum total of the rust was a golf ball sized hole in the front corner of the LHS boot.
If I saw ANYTHING like I have seen in some of these projects, the car would be straight to the wreckers! Full credit to you guys!!
This is my first Rover (have had 5 Alfas) and i gotta say I'm very impressed. Ok, I know very little when it comes to working on cars, but i am learning that these things are 1) remarkably easy to work on. Just gotta take your time, and label and store correctly. 2) Extraordinarily well engineered yet reflect old fashioned common sense. 3) Way, way ahead of their time, and generally very overlooked and under appreciated.
After lots of lurking and reading heaps of posts, your all very passionate about these P6 things, and rightly so.
Cant wait to drive mine.

Re: P6 V8 project: Winter work/rust repair etc

Hi Brenten,

Like your post LOL :D , us poms would give our right arm to have rust free body shells to work with but all we know is good old weathered UK cars!
Hey if you come across abandoned rust free P6's then please feel free to ship the panels to me here in the UK  if only!

Great that you are starting the new project P6 V8,!! you'll find this an excellent forum, the guys on here are an extremely friendly, clever bunch with a wealth of knowledge on the cars! hope too see some pics, but not of the 'golf ball size' rust hole as that will result in pure jealousy :)

Good luck with the project!
cheers Damian

Re: P6 V8 project: Winter work/rust repair etc

Damian... Wheels, Wheels, Wheels!!! Where's the wheels? I want to see them on the car!

Re: P6 V8 project: Winter work/rust repair etc

WHEELS:................Stop teasing me ya buggers!

They really are on a " slow cargo boat from China to Cragar in the US"!!!!!
Cragar have their own manufacturing plant in China & this is where the delay is
Tim at Raceways in Donington will air freight them as soon as they arrive in USA to him & then on to me :) , he has several orders awaiting from Cragar for his customers including me! So fingers, legs & other parts crossed they should arrive to my work address end of the month....6 month's after I ordered them. luckily I am still working on the rear of the car, have now stone chipped & painted in black smoothrite the rear under body, all old bushes removed, suspension & diff painted in blk smoothrite. Now need to fit the polybushes, new rear disc's n pads, new braided brake hoses & re-assemble the whole lot!
By the time I have completed this it'll be the end of March...fingers crossed!

Re: P6 V8 project: Winter work/rust repair etc

Hi Guys,

Its back on its wheels again, all but for a week, now front wings/valance are off for welding repairs, Hmm bit more than expected but to be honest not to bad, mainly hocky stick repairs, some bodge it n scarper has welded the front wings to the car when patching the front hocky stick panels both sides, oh and the frot valance was also welded to the wings  , it was mainly filler! yummy, hey ho! Does anybody have a good pair of front wings going?

Re: P6 V8 project: Winter work/rust repair etc

You're doing a great job, there! :D

That previous bodger's mess is an insult to the word 'repair'. Out of sight, out of mind, no doubt....

Re: P6 V8 project: Winter work/rust repair etc

That's a cracking cover up job  Lets slide a bit in here and make a shield there and nobody will ever know

Re: P6 V8 project: Winter work/rust repair etc

Yes wasnt the best of repairs, I think if I slammed the bonnet to hard the whole front would have fallen off! Some pics of the wings & front valance or lack of it!
Front O/S spring & arm removed to replace the hardly non-welded patch there, wasnt to bad removing the spring, easier than I thought, used two big compressors either side of it, will do both sides & polybush the upper link arms & the shocks, should be back on the road end of April & hey I mite even have the alloys fited...will start praying

Re: P6 V8 project: Winter work/rust repair etc

Crikey! The extent of all that corrosion is pretty terrifying. I don't know how to weld (I had to have the metalwok repairs to my P6 done by pros) and I'm not an MOT tester, but isn't there something in the test guidelines about corrosion within a certain distance of suspension mounting points being a fail? Surely that rot on the 'firewall' or foot box or whatever it is called is right next to where the front suspension is attached? Whatever, my unsolicited opinion isn't worth tuppence, and I doff my hat to you for your courage in taking on what I reckon I would've just walked away from shaking my head. Hope you get it all ship-shape and looking forward to seeing how you get on with those Cragar alloy wheels. I reckon they'll look great on a P6.

Re: P6 V8 project: Winter work/rust repair etc

Here's a car I've seen in person that is being restored ( ! ) that makes your Rover look like a paragon of structural integrity...If the video looks bad, you should have seen what was under it ( and what wasn't ). The SM still drove under its own power; a far braver owner than me  A decent sneeze near this and it would have fallen in half, the engine mounts were hanging in space, that is duct tape around the back window
At least the owner has the satisfaction of knowing it will be worth 30,000 Euros when it's finished; but how much weight will all that lead, braze +filler add I wonder ( ? )

There was a Citroen SM in the front garden of a house near me for about 10years - just as rusty
