PAE .... Sleipnir???

Hi Jim

The 100A was a figure because I know they are available. This is not an area where engineering design should limit ambition. Review what's available at what cost on Ebay and choose the load capacity accordingly.

When building the Thai car, I bought and installed a 100A because it had A/C, electric windows, central locking etc etc etc. So I was looking to be on the safe side. I'm sure there are more moderate power outputs available, I'd simply let my choice of power output be driven by availability and cost rather than any assesment of the car's loads. After all, there's no harm in running a high power one at part capacity, but if you haven't got enough...

Chris

btw, started working on UCA again, SD1 heads. 3.9 cam. SD1 timing cover fitted. Next job rebuild the ZF 22. All due to the advice from forum members. Many thanks.

Nice one :) Make sure to share as you go!

Chris, is that one i posted the link to suitable? The most electrical equipment i'm likely to install is a beefier stereo :)

The battery lasted over a week being driven round after a fortnight standing without an alternator it seems!

Just had a quick review of Ebay.

50A = £50 all the way up to 150A at around £180

I thought these three looked good value in the bang per buck stakes. And yes all three will fit a short nose engine even when they say Thor.

I really can see no reason other than a wish for originality to replace the existing system as is.

Chris

OK - so lets say i do this, is there any rhyme or reason to the connectors and what goes where? I can use the AC11 to make sure the circuit is as it should be to start with then move onto this once the wiring is correct?

Rich

Essentially, there will be a small terminal to feed the ignition light, so a new wire run from there direct to the lamp. Then a power output connection which will be pretty obvious cos it's a big one! Possibly a signal feed to the control system, but that depends on which particular one you get. Job Jobbed!

As to what order to do things in. Well I really don't see any point unscrambling an obviously messed around set of multiple circuits for the 11AC if you're then going to abandon them all in favour of a new alternator of this type. So that just leaves unscrambling the other wiring problems.

Don't forget the bracket. All of these are certain to need to mount outboard of the rocker cover. Any bracket from any Rover V8 in any appllication will do. (except the one you have at the moment!)

Chris

:) busy window shopping on autotrader at the moment... the audi's no longer with us by the looks of it. Any body have any views on the prius or honda insight?

Rich

Prius - not a bad car overall, bit boring. But would be much more economical with a decent VAG diesel under the hood. It's really little more than a petrol electric that can use it's engine to charge the battery.

Insight. Mmmm. Much more interesting. I suspect the same comment about engine applies as to the Prius but the Honda technicals look more accomplished than the Toyota ones. I think they get regenerative braking don't they?

I might consider thinking about buying new of either, but I'd be very scared by the prospect of a second hand battery.... How long do they last??

Chris

I'd be inclined to buy something nice, on LPG, rather than a more expensive diesel, with its associated DMF, and DPF issues. Something big, comfy, safe, and not terribly desirable on LPG makes a lot of sense if you plan to keep a car for a while. The Prius seems to have a decent reputation, but the bootspace is useless, and I wouldn't be too keen to buy one that's terribly old. The early Insights are becoming quite desirable, but the current one is rather unrefined, and not terribly comfortable, or economical, for that matter.

The batteries arent the most unreliable bit from what i've read... Something like 1% of cars have issues. Also looking on ebay you can get the batteries fixed by 3rd parties now!

The insight and civic seem about 2k cheaper like for like than the prius, though that has better economy.

These cars would suit i think as most of our miles are short hop town miles. Sort of means we can downgrade insurance groups, and get a newer car with the savings on fuel...

Rich

Thanks Harvey! So next question - does anybody have a bracket they can spare I can get hold of by the weekend?

Thanks
Rich.

Hi Rich,

Apart from the correct bracket (90614433) for the ACR, you'll also need the adjusting link (614432), which is different to the 11AC link. In addition 3 bolts which will be needed to attach the bracket to the cylinder head, again different to the 11AC bracket. One 5/16" UNC X 2 1/2" long, one 3/8" UNC X 2 1/2" long and one 3/8" UNC X 3 1/2" long.

Ron.

Cheers Ron. I'll give Geoff at wins a call this morning and see if he has any of these parts.

When the 11ac turns up it'll go on as we're now completely carless anyway.

Anybody able to share which terminal does what? I'm missing the piece of loom that actually connects to the alternator!

Thanks,

Rich

found this :

a) is this correct?

b) Any idea which wires on the 3 pin plug into the main loom these match to?

I guess the thick brown wire is 12v for the big spade connector.

F+
F-

are the 2 confusing ones. I'll get a picture of the connector after pheebs is in bed!

Rich.

Rich,
An easy first step is to fit the 3aw (is the plug still on the harness for that?)
Then, with the ignition on, ground NY and the ignition light should come on.
