Jinx's Record of Improvement

Hi Adam really pleased you got past that rough patch with the work, and now you can start to enjoy your cars again
well done and good luck
marcus :D

Just getting myself back on track financially so there hasn't been much going on with Jinx recently, that all changed today however. Jinx went for it's MOT today and has decided it quite fancies some new inner sills.

Watch this space...

Okay - So it's been an expensive couple of weeks, Jinx failed it's MOT on the inner sills which was a major blow, they were shot. After much deliberation and weighing up I decided to make the investment and get Clive to sort them out for me. It was a major piece of work and I'll post some pictures when I get them...

However today was the big day, I went to the bank and withdrew a considerable amount of money (which wasn't really mine) and went over to Derby on the bus to pay for and collect Jinx. All was well, Jinx is all solid again and purring like a tiger. I paid the man, wound back the roof to make the most of the October sunshine and headed down the A52 back to Nottingham. Buzzing along in the outside lane everything felt good, solid, sturdy and... BANG!!!! The bonnet latch failed and the bonnet hit the windscreen faster than you could see it move. I instinctively locked up, scaring the crap out of everyone, regained composure and guided it to the edge of the road looking through the 3" gap at the bottom of the screen. Clive came out to me to help secure it enough to get it home, but it's not pretty. Bonnet - FUBAR, Roof - Dented, Webasto - Bent to bollox.

Jinx is living up to it's name today.

The insurance are on the case, apparently...

I'm very sorry to see this, especially after all the effort you've put into the car! Glad that you weren't hurt, and I hope that Jinx is sorted and back to looking terrific in no time!

Ouch !, you were lucky there.

On the plus side, arial is ok, windscreen I presume is ok, series 2 bonnets are easy to come by (you can have one of mine if you can't find anything local). Just paint and the webasto to sort out, that looks like the more complex job, but you never know. fingers crossed.

p.s. don't bin that bonnet badge

Thanks Guys, I really appreciate the offer of a bonnet too Richard, I'll let you know if I need it. Having calmed down a touch I'm pleased to have escaped the disaster that could have happened and grateful to be okay!

It was a major kick in the ribs after handing over the thick end of a month's wages on the sills. The insurance company (Footman James) seem to be moving quickly on it at least, we'll see though. I need to get it somewhere as it's not really secure on the webasto roof and the bonnet isn't close-able.

FFS - I'm going for a beer.

Hi Adam,
I can imagine that was some scary stuff at the time at least no one came to any harm and hopefully The Insurer's do there stuff

Not a pretty sight :(

Get that catch and safety looked at so you know what the cause was. Wonder if it stuck across :|

Hope it's sorted quick for you

Sorry to hear of your accident.
I see what you mean about Jinx though. It must be a bit like someone closing a blind down on the windscreen  - great driving to get out of that one 8) I can see by your pictures your 'S' is well worth sticking with. It looks superb 8)

Good luck with the repairs.

Dear me Adam! So sorry to see this. It's the shock and the frustration of having been just within reach of being able to enjoy him again! Glad you weren't hurt though!

Chris

Crikey, glad you managed to pull over safely. I was going to offer you a lift over to collect it yesterday but I was busy with work in the end - you could have done with a bit of moral support by the looks of it.

Have you any idea why both catches failed?

Blimey, that's nasty

You may need to change your car's name Adam.

Good to see no one was hurt

There is a red bonnet (primer) on ebay for £25.00 in Birmingham, or if you want to take up Richard's offer, I have a van which goes to Wakefield and sometimes to Nottingham too, so I may be able to organise a delivery.

Best of luck with it Mate

Richard

Ouch!!!!!! As said before at least no one was hurt, well done for getting to a safe stop as well. Your bonnet hinges must be strong, surprised it didn't rip the bonnet off right over the roof. Typical get one job finished and it throws another at you. Let's hope it can be sorted quickly and probably just as importantly at a very reasonable cost.

Hi Adam,

Sods law mate, my heart goes out to you, As all the guys have said lucky escape and that the screen held out!

Even with a dented bonnet, she still looks mint! Wouldnt have thought your sill would be rotten looking at the rest of the car but hey ho, the joys of classic car motoring, maybe change its name to Christine, see if it repairs itself!
look forward to seeing Jinx/ Christine back on the road :D

All the best Damian.

Thanks Guys,

It really is the support of you lot that gives me the motivation to carry on with this car. I really appreciate the offers of bonnets too, I think I'm sorted for one but if it doesn't come off I'll be in touch with one of you to take up your kind offers. An engineer is going to come and have a look tomorrow to assess... something, who knows what, probably just to see it's actually damaged. From then we can assume it'll drag out a bit for no particular reason, as is the way with insurance. Why the safety latch didn't work I don't know, the bonnet was definitely pushed right down before I set off from Clive's. Ho hum... I'll be super paranoid about it from now on though, I might even tie clip it down and snip it every time I want the bonnet open  .

As for the sills Damian, I was shocked too as it was all restored about 10 years ago. The inners wings, splash panels and hockey sticks are all mint. It seems though that when the previous restorer put the inner sills in he didn't put any paint on them... at all. Now however it's all solid as a rock inside and out, painted and waxoyled to 'Sparky' Standard inside too ("Sparky standard" is the new level of solidness to aspire, Mr Quattro  ).

Any which way it goes I'll end up keeping it I think, in for a penny, in for a few grand. If the insurance pays out to fix it then great, I'll lose the excess but sh*t happens, if they write it off I'll buy it back and fix it, if they don't pay I'll just have to slap a bonnet on and do what I can with the rest of it.

I might be time for a new name, but to be honest, once a name's stuck it's a keeper. I could change the name, but Jinx wouldn't be fooled.

Adam, check your policy, I have just renewed my classic policy and they say if the car is written off they will pay the agreed value and I keep the car. I did say you mean I buy it back off you for a nominal sum, he said no you keep the car, it would be of no use to an insurance company. worth a look

Going back to the rust and restoration, you've got to remember that the sills are generally the first area to rot anyway, so that will be the same with a restored car, plus 10 years is a long time, I'm sure out of the factory they would have been rotting well be then. Sometimes we forget the timescales we're talking about, especially if the car continues in daily use, no reason it shouldn't rot at roughly the same speed it would have from new.

Of course a much better than factory rust protection scheme will help, plenty of paint and cavity wax, pretty much the same reason why there are some original un-welded cars about.

Anyway I've discovered a new preservation system, taken from one of our other threads, apparently the best way to preserve an old car is to bury it in silt at the bottom of a freshwater lake

In terms of the insurance, you really don't want them to write it off, regardless whether you get the salvage or not, so if you can come to some deal for them to pay for repairs based on used parts that would be best, otherwise you end up in the situation one of our other members (Phil ?) was when his was crashed and they wrote it off without telling him, search the forum for his story.

To be honest I probably wouldn't put a claim in for this, I know I'd end up paying it back in increased premiums, and a bonnet some paint and a play about with the roof wouldn't be worth it to me, but everybody's circumstances are different.
