Jinx's Record of Improvement

A bonus of being off work (hopefully not for much longer!) means I've had the time to do a few little jobs on Jinx over the last few days. It's had a squashed nearside sill cover since I got it so I (actually Testrider did, thanks Paul) picked up a rough looking but solid one from Ian Wilson which my Dad and I stripped with paint stripper, primed and satin blacked then swapped it over. Easy enough job with the exception of a few stubborn screws underneath which we eventually persuaded to go in. All in all a successful afternoon's work.

Another purchase I got from Ian Wilson with Paul's help was a series one non-wavey dash bottom and a decent non-wavey top too. While they were out I stripped and satin blacked the metal covers on either side of the instrument panel too as they were looking pretty crusty. This whole area was something that bothered me, you spend most of you time looking at the dash board (well, you do if you drive it a lot), so the inside is a very nice place to be now... just got to fix my clock and get rid of that bloody awful 80's stereo now.

Next up I finally got my Quattro-supplied police spoilers painted up in my spare room (you can do this when you're single and you don't have a garage). A few people in the club reckoned Jinx wasn't Monza red, I had my doubts too. Some trial and error and a bit of an educated guess has revealed that Jinx is actually Rover Flame Red '89', which is a touch brighter than Monza. The spoilers match perfectly in Halfords flame red, sealed with some cheap door draft-excluder strip from Wilkinsons, it's brown but it sticks well, looks pretty good and fills the gaps nicely. A big thanks to my dad for letting me use his garage and tools, that's his Triumph 2000 in the background.

Looking good!

Were you travelling down the the A52 between Nottingham and Grantham and last Tuesday? I was heading down there when I spotted a smart looking Red P6 coming the other way and thought of Jinx seeing as you're based in the Notts area.I was in my open top Land Rover, making the most of the sunshine 8)

Whoever it was, the car looked smart, and was making a great V8 rumble.

It was indeed me, I was on my way either to or from yet another job interview in Cambridge... I recall seeing the Land Rover too!

Cambridge is going to be a fair commute from Notts :D

I'll know to wave if I pass you going that way again. I travel down that way a fair bit to visit a friend in Radcliffe on Trent. Might be in the XJ next time though, the exhaust has started blowing on the Land Rover :)

Hope the job interview went well.

I was in London and Cardiff back in '08 trying to find work and came home empty handed, hopefully you have more luck than me!

(things are pretty lousy in Australia too if it's any consolation, I've been doing a "temporary" job for two years).

That new dash board does make a difference - looks much better now - and I know the sill getting rid of the dented sill cover has made you happy even though no one would notice it!

Your Dad's 2000 looks pretty smart too.

I just have a feeling that, if you sell Jinx, you'll get a job within days that would have enabled you to keep it. Much better to keep it, as others have said you'd never get back what you've put into it anyway.

Sooooo... After months of applications and stress I've finally got a decent job as a Sales Engineer with a company called Phoenix Contact, I start 1st July. This means I can thra.. I mean 'drive' the company Toyota Avensis for day to day and give Jinx a well-earned break. I've put nearly 5000 miles on the poor devil in 4 months (Poor for my wallet too  ). I'd say more but my head's a shed today, can't think straight yet!

Thanks guys, if Jinx stayed with me through that little trauma then it's here for good I reckon.

RIGHT THEN - Back to trying to rebuild the huge pile of cash I would normally have kicking about  and start on the improvements again.

Hey Adam, Awesome news Dude! as the guys have said brilliant that you were able to keep the mighty V8!!!

Cherry on the cake would be to treat yourself to a set of CRAGARS 8)

I'm really pleased to have got through this without selling off any vital organs, or even worse, the mighty V8...

Thanks for your kind messages guys, it means a lot to me... as for the Cragars Damian, they'll have to wait a while yet. I have an MOT looming in the autumn, a growing desire for power steering and a hankering to take a couple of inches out of the ride height before I blow what I imagine will be well into 4 figures on some new rims
