Engine upgrade

O.k Chris .
I can put up with it as it's really not that bad at the moment . I do worry sometimes if it's likely to let go all of a sudden , that's my main concern i guess . Is that likely to happen ? I'd like to keep an eye on it and do it at some convenient time if that's reasonable . Aside from hooking the motor out how difficult a job is the seal ?

i did wonder which was the best way to go about it , i guess that's what i mean about waiting for a convenient time , maybe when their's another issue / reason to remove the engine or box .

I think they can leak a little bit for years...

Mine does :)

My plan is to eventually overhaul the car's original engine with new pistons, rings, camshaft etc... then drop it in... :)

Rich.

ideally i'd like to leave it alone until it needs to come out . looking like keep an eye on it is the way for now !

Hi Stina,

As you don't do many miles, it will most likely be fine for the next 20 years or more. When it starts leaving pools 6 or more inches across over night, that will be the time to act.

Ron.

Thanks Ron , Guys . I'll put that one to bed for now then , and carry on with my cylinder head plan :D

Or pull the box out. My box was leaking like a sieve until I had it rebuilt last year. I then took the opportunity to have the sump dropped and the lip seal replaced. Does the old 65 need an overhaul yet? At least if it did, it would provide a reason.

Well now you've jinxed me and i need to take the box out
I've been looking at replacing the rear seal in the manual . It says to apply hylomar pl32m , or unipart ggc102 to the rear most half of the bearing cap on reassembly . Guessing these are no longer available , so any one know the modern alternative ?
Also says a service tool ,seal guide is needed on reassembly . True , or not true ?

There is a tool, it's to protect the lip of the seal from damage as it's pushed over the back of the crank, you won't have one, so improvise by taping up the rear of the crank with insulating tape and coating it with oil before you push the seal over.

No jinxing voodoo going on here, I can assure you. As a very small consolation to your 65 flambé, I am pleased to confirm that good old Blue Hylomar pl32 is still in production.

All part of the service.

Thanks for the info guys , and the link .
Is their a substitute for the hylomar ? i can't find it any where other than the link Richard Quattro posted and i'd rather not set up an account with them on line .

Hi Stina,

A suitable oil resistant sealant is Permatex #3. Like Hylomar it never fully sets but always remains flexible. I have used it for years, is excellent stuff.

Ron.

Hi all . I've been following Damian z28's engine thread with interest , and it's thrown up a question for me . I'll ask here rather than clog his thread up .
I have my SD1 heads ready to go on when the time comes , I've checked them for straight and lapped the valves in . I'v am preparing to run them with no exhaust seals ( it came with the umbrella type seals ) I have been advised by guys on the V8 forum to run without them as they will brake up in time .
What do we think on here please :?:
I Don't want to do a load of work then end up with a puff of smoke on start up :?
