Engine upgrade

Hi all , time for a running report .
I've done around a hundred miles since putting it all back together , and sorting a few teething issues ( the fuel pump still weeps around the inlet , despite having a new union made up and shortening the pipe to suit :x ) i think the original pipe has worn thin , i will get them to make me a new one .
As for the actual running of the engine , well it,s achieved what i was hoping for . Now i've set up the carb linkages and balance ( BAC needles after some discussion ) and set the timing etc . It has a nice smooth tickover and the top gear roll on acceleration is amazing ( the over used phrase of pulls like a turbine springs to mind :D ) Accompanied by a very purposeful growl :!:
I'll do another 100 miles then change the oil and filter .
The only issue i,m not totally happy with is the puff of blue smoke when starting from hot , it's not allot and clears straight away . It hasn't used any oil . I,m wondering if it will get better with use as the heads were chemically cleaned (and i cleaned the top of the pistons) , so there is no carbon as yet to slow up any oil running down the stems :?
I used these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120663856484? ... 1439.l2649 as i thought there was no easy way of fitting them after the heads were on , but if they give trouble after then i can destroy and pull them off after with a good set of long nosed pliers  I had the rocker covers off after it'd been through a few heat cycles to re check the head bolts and the seals were still sat in the correct position . I also wonder if they allow an amount of oil to sit on top of them and then find it,s way past as it's sat :? Thoughts :?:
Apart from that i,m really pleased with it :D

I think if they give trouble, they usually just fall off anyway..?
Did you fit them with the standard sd1 valve guides?
It sounds like a small price to pay for the smooth running you've achieved Stina :D

Good job there stina.

I hope it's not those seals as I've bought the same type. In fact I think it was me who pointed you towads them following a recommendation on the V8 Forum  You can agonise over these decisions for ages and I keep changing my mind over which bits to replace on my V8 and which bits to keep. Changing the valve guides for a set that have better seals seems so much hastle to me and there's an ongoing debate over whether to press or hammer new guides in.....plus my oven isn't big enough to get the heads in anyway  . I'll probably change my mind again before I rebuild

Hopefully the puff of smoke will stop after a few more miles.

Dave

Right,o ,
Still running well ( unintentionally spun up in 2nd in the wet yesterday  ) Today i changed the oil and it was like water , after the cam run in and 150 miles ! That running in process seems to really knock the oil about . It seemed not to smoke after the second restart , (moving it about a bit on the drive) i got soaked washing it down , so instead of going for a run i had a bath and watched the MOTO GP and had an easy afternoon :D :D
We shall see :!:
Ps I did a fly by , drop off mission to the allotment this morning and left it running , without resorting to cutting and bodging the exhaust system it sounds great lovely and throaty :D

Hi Stina,

The viscosity of the oil is a function of its temperature, so the hotter it is, the thinner it will appear. What type of oil did you use? Did you also change the filter?

Yep after 30 years of fiddling with old motors i know that Ron  I'm trying to put across that it seemed "very" thin for the work it had done compared to a normal mileage oil change . I put this down to running in new parts with additives for cam and graphogen etc . I noticed as Paul "Testrider" did that the oil seems to have a hard time after this running in period , and the pressure had dropped a little more than it would normally ( this is on a mechanical gauge , not the Micky Mouse job in the dash )
Millers 20/50 and K&N filter Ron , what else would you use

The dash gauge is perfectly fine, it is the aftermarket sender that you are using that is the problem, as I mentioned to you a while ago on this thread

and

I have never seen Millers oil on the shelves here, so I am not in a position to comment as I have never used it. The K & N oil filters are great, in fact I was the first person the on the forum to start using them. I shared that information with others on the forum, hence you're using one now

After my 4.6 was built, the first fill was of Penrite Running in oil.

What was the condition of the original camshaft and lifters as you didn't say. Was there any noticable wear after only 65,000 Miles? Are you able to post some photos please Stina? If you run a straight edge over the base of the lifters, was there any concavity evident?

Thanks in advance,
Ron.

The cam was reasonably o'k , better than that in fact . As for the lifters , they were worn concave , every one but all quite uniform , apart from one that looked to be braking up on the edge of the concave worn edge , this was the only one that wouldn't lift up and out easily with finger pressure , so i dropped it down and out after cam removal . I suspect this was the one starting to get vocal on occasion .
As for the pictures , i took loads of the build . On putting the card into the reader it wiped the lot , including every show and thing i have done in the last year     I managed to take the few in this thread with the original camera card that only holds a few pics . Lesson for the day , down load your pics at regular interval

Stina there are programs on the net that allow you to recover deleted files from your camera memory card, I would suggest you down load and recover them before using your camera again, if the camera has not been used you should be able to recover 100% of the lost photos.

The best program I found was this http://www.piriform.com/recuva
there are others but I can strongly recommend this one, do a deep scan not a fast scan, you should get the lot and more

Goodness  That is pretty crook for such a low mileage. Maybe a previous owner had not been using the correct grade of oil or didn't change it very often. Having said that, the lifter gallery on your engine looked pretty clean, so that would tend to rule out the latter.

Since mid 2007, my 4.6 has put away almost 88,000 Miles (142,000km) and the engine remains free of any unwanted noises. Looking inside the rocker cover shows everything bright and silver, just like when it was brand new, so I am hopeful that my lifters also look like new, certainly there is no indication of the contrary.

Thanks Graeme .
I've however , already flipped and binned it  More haste less speed

Put this pic up on another thread .
This is/was , may well be ! the end of this engine thread ! or maybe not :? :?
