1970 Rover 3500 - EMF

Grim , what would you have to charge ?
It is serious money,as much as many P6's are worth, but I suppose you do it for love , not an investement

Every job has to be quoted individually obviously but as Rick says, it really runs away fast with labour on bodywork. Even tidy cars hide many a days work in fabrication, welding etc
Cars have to be of a high value to ever see your money back in the sale price after some renovation work IMO :)

I regularly advise folk to sell as is, so the new owner can see what they're getting, unless you want to have a spend up with pics to prove your expense, which will only get a small portion of your outlay back. Unless you want to keep it then do it right and do it once :)

We work on lots of cars that are beyond economical sense as you say, we are a nation of classic fans though 8)

By the way Paul, the panels that are back on do look sweet.

Thanks for checking Mick, I can't get over there this week.

Grim, I hope I've not offended you or put you in an awkward position by saying how much I'm paying and obviously you can't give a quote online for this sort of work.

For me, the long and short of it is that I'm happy with the quality of the work that's being done and I can (just) afford to pay for it. I didn't want to change my P6 just because the paint was shabby and I doubt I could buy one as nice as this will be when it's done for the money I've spent on the repaint. I'm sure quattro will agree with me here, it's not being painted to sell, it's being painted to keep, use and cherish.

Ron, the Minilites are 6Jx14, but I'm not sure what the offset is because I didn't buy them - I assume they're the same as factory wheels because I've not had any rubbing inside the rear wheel arch. I don't have the car at present so I can't check it for you.

The previous owner had some special stepped wheel nuts machined up for them because the holes are much bigger than the studs and they are not counter sunk so there was nothing to locate the wheel properly. He thought that the wheels had been on from new, I'm not sure about that, but he bought the car with them already on in 1996 from a man who'd had it for ten years and also didn't fit them.

They are genuine Minilites though on Superlight copies. If you're buying new, I'd suggest going for 15" diameter rather than 14" as the tyre choice is greater.

It's me that's been jabbering on your thread
You are the type of customers that we in the trade like :) You know what it costs and that you get what you pay for.
Looks like it's gonna be a cracker when finished 8)

Thanks Paul. I am indeed investigating alternatives to my current 14" wheels as suitable tyres have all but disappeared, including the Michelins that I have been using for the last few years.

I do like the look of your Minilites too.. :)

Ron.

Yokohama and Toyo seem to be the best ones that I could find in 195/70R14, but I know you use slightly bigger tyres don't you?

Very true Paul. I have been running 205/70 issues since 1987. Toyo do make one that is 'T' rated and Maxxis also make one that is 'H' rated, so for now I have purchased 4 of these. I have Michelins on my OEM steel wheels and Goodyear Eagle LS2000's on my Rostyles. Which ever wheels I end up buying be they 15 or 16 or whatever inch, I wish to retain the current studs so I can refit the original wheels for Rover display days etc.

Re: 1970 Rover 3500 - Nearly there now!

As it was a nice day yesterday I took a ride over to Derby to see how Clive was getting on with my car. I've been polishing the stainless trim pieces whilst the car's been in bits and side trims rear door kick plates were done so I wrapped them in newspaper and strapped them to the top tube of my bike with a couple of toe straps, the rear door kick plates went in my bag and I set off. I didn't take a picture of my bike but I did get a few strange looks from passers by!

Anyway, I arrived to find it almost back in one piece. The wings have been painted are back on now with the lights refitted and checked for operation. The door mirrors have been refitted in a new location so that I can a) see behind with them and b) open the quarterlights again.

^No reflectors here!

The panels have all been set so the swage lines flow nicely down the sides and all the gaps are even. The front valance is on too but I couldn't get a picture of it as it was close to the wall. The rear valance and front decker panel are ready to go on too.

The last two panels - bonnet and boot lid - were in the spray booth receiving their final coats of lacquer and should be fitted next week.

Hopefully, maybe I might be able to take it for a spin in the sunshine on the bank holiday weekend 8)

Hi Paul, just spent the last hour or so reading through your thread. Fantastic reading and enjoying the pictures too, I'm sure you will be very proud driving and showing EMF once you have him back and it's definitely a feel good factor when you know you have done the majority of the renovation yourself and handed the car to someone who cares for the finale phase. I think that is the hardest thing to find these days is someone that will care as much as yourself about your pride and joy. You had a picture of EMF at Duxford 2008 I remembered it there because of the Mini lites,if I remember there was a couple of other P6's with them on too. I was also there in my P6 which featured in the gallery photos on the P6OC. Its been a great read and look forward to the finale installation and seeing you and EMF about. :D

I agree with using the car and not hiding it away otherwise what's the point of having it as the girls say "if you've got it flaunt it"

Ron - I had the guys measure up the backspace etc on my car to see if I could get some American Racing Torq Thrust D's on there in a 15, while we were at it there was an E49 charger in the workshop with Superlights on it, got chatting, made a phone call, you can get Superlights in a 15x6 in any offset in a 5x127 pcd for approx $240 each. Might be an option for you.

Car's looking great!

Very nice, it's going to look like a new one.

Have you got a finish date yet?

Richard

Ha ha ha, that's a good one! June 17th was the original finishing date, but that obviously came and went and he's fairly sure it should be done for Saturday - this coming Saturday.

I'm glad you've enjoyed reading about my escapades with EMF Guy. There are still plenty of things I want to do to it over the next few years - it's not finished yet. I would have liked to be able to do the painting myself too, I could buy the equipment and have a go at learning the skills, but it's just not possible as I don't have the space to do it properly and safely. Even though someone else has done the paintwork I've still learnt a lot about panel preparation and detailing which I can apply to other areas.

Thanks Geoff. That price for the Superlight wheels doesn't seem too bad -it's about 2.2$AUS to the pound isn't it?

I think my wheels are Minilite Sport wheels but I'm not sure if they still make them to fit the P6

I know what you mean, I've had mine almost 6 years now and there will always be something to do to it because of need and wants, but as you know the pleasures out weigh the strife. Keep up the good work and I look forward to the next instalment :) :) :)

The days must be dragging for you :? Don't know if I could wait for Saturday if I where in your shoes but I'm sure the end result will be just perfect :D :D

Hi, I have been reading through the story of EMF and really enjoyed it. It seems you are going to get a fantastic car in the end. I am curious about the modifications mr Annable is doing to improve on the Rovers built-in rust traps. The front wing for example, what has he done to the strengtening plate, moved it out a bit to avoid grit and moisture being trapped there? I can confirm it is a bad rustspot, both my front wings have rust bubbles there. Can the strengtening be left out completly? Are there any other clever modification that can be beneficial with regards to removing rust traps when restoring& painting a P6?
I am looking forward to see the pictures of the finished car!
regards, Barten
