Sparky's winter/spring/summer/autumn work

I have to say Rich, I'm really in awe at what you've achieved after what you've been through. I know (Adamhotrod) helped you out, seems, like an absolute top bloke, but you've done an awful lot yourself too. I am in awe of your work. Sparky is really looking much better than he originally left the showroom when new. I take my hat off to you Sir.. 8)

Ahhh... It really was a pleasure to help out, especially working on such a clean car in such a great garage!

What you've achieved so far is testament to your dedication, I think I speak for a few of us when I say it's humbling to see how much you've got done, regardless of your health hindrances.

I hope Sparky can live up to people's expectations

Thanks everyone

I took the day off today because I wanted to get Sparky out of the garage and get sorted out in there - it's a bit of a mess.

I took the rear wheels off (jacked on the trailing arms) and torqued up the top link on both sides, then down on the ground.

Ran him up to warm to check the fan cut in - it did :) no leaks in the cooling system :) checked the timing and found it to be 6 degrees :) ATDC :? . Never mind, sorted that pretty quick. Finished fettling with the doors and they all clunk closed perfectly, and managed to get the front wing on without the front door fouling it.

I then drove it outside - yes drove it 8) I couldn't believe how good that felt.

After a good clear out

From the previous list

Get kneebin to close - took it off for now, its in the back seat
Finish fitting drivers door - Fully fettled and finished off - won't quite open from the inside?
Clean and recolour front seats, then fit them - Done
Get car back on ramps and :-
Check all fuel pipes and sort leak - Sorted
Reconnect fuel reserve cable - Done
Torque up all suspension bolts - Just the front lower link to do
Check all electrics work - Not yet
Fit passenger kneebin - Nope
Fit nearside front wing and bonnet - Still at work
Fit both front calipers (have rebuilt one, but one of the new pistons had a fault so I am waiting for another one) - done
Bleed brakes - done, still a little spongy though, I may have to do it again
Tidy garage - Done
Go for a drive - real soon :D :D :D :D :D

This is sure to be one of the very best p6s on the road

I agree, and the standard has raised a lot recently! Funny how a garage tidy-up can clear the mind and make everything seem closer to finished.

Jobs are a lot easier when you're not falling over hoses / cables / tools etc.. Plus I find it's better when you know where everything is.

How about a nice couple of coats of garage floor paint, now the dirty jobs have been done.

Look we're already dreaming up more work for you to do !

Funny that, tidying up usually guarantees that I don't know where anything is!

I'm holding my breath at the moment until I see Richard's first MoT post1

Chris

Well done so far Richard. I don't know how you've found the inner strength to leave it and go to work when it's so close to being done!

That 'to do' list is getting shorter all the time and there's nothing that's going to take weeks to sort. How's the headlamp aim since you took the bowls to bits?

Thanks Lads, lots of finishing touches still to do for that, but there is plenty of time after I get him back on the road.

Inner strength has nothing to do with it Paul. The minions are getting restless and are all squabling with each other. I have to go back and get some order before they kill each other.

I had forgotten about the headlamp aim

Came home from work early :D and bonnet is on, both wings, front decker, washers work, number plates lights working, valance on but not bolted up yet, front side light units fitted and wired up.

Bumper just balanced on there to see what it looks like - after all those months in bits and up on the ramps, he looks a lot smaller than I remember :?

Got the insurance yesterday, so as soon as I can just finish off, its off to the MOT station - shame I am away for the weekend, but then my son is only going to be 21 once I suppose.

OOOO!!! OOOO!! OOOO!!

I'd be sneaking out there in the middle of the night in my Jim-Jams if I was that close.

Feel free mate, I'll leave you a key :D

I have to fit the N/S sill,
repair the front indicator housing (there's a bit missing),
fit the lower front valance fixing strips,
adjust the Driver's door handle (inside lever) as it doesn't quite open the door,
adjust the bonnet and fit the striker plate/bonnet opening assembly,
fit the front bumper along with the outer brackets,
find and fit the front number plate bracket
work out why the inner headlamps don't work, and fix them
adjust the headlamp aim,
torque up the lower front suspension bushes
finish eeking in the front O/S bonnet rubber- N/s one just popped in but this one is playing up
fit the windscreen wipers
wash it

Then MOT and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnuS-UH322s

Well, Sparky has a new windscreen sticker :D :D :D :D

What more can I say? I got to the MOT station at 11.00am and was immediately surrounded by the mechanics amongst sayings such as, "That's a minter," "My dad had one of those," "I always wanted on of those,"and "blimey it's like new under here." He passed with no advisories, first time :D :D :D

Still have a few things to do, like putting the strips back on - I have only got the front one on as yet.

Clive is going to put the rest on as he was the one who filled the holes up - I really don't want to bodge it now :?

Sparky certainly goes better than he used to, possibly down to the new exhaust or the better grade of fuel I am now using the 97 octane (want to try that Tesco stuff but our local Tesco fuel station doesn't do it).

Bit noisier though. Just teething problems I hope, but I have that sort of road noise that sounds like he's hit a concrete motorway at speed. I will see what it is like after I have 1/. put the glove boxes on (they are still in the back seat  ), and 2/. put some insulation around the gearstick There is just a leather boot around it at the moment which is not fastened down anywhere, so could possibly be a noisey gearbox.

Feels great cruising around though, after all of this time.

Richard

Well done Richard, Sparky's looking great now. I (actually the whole forum I suspect) look forward to seeing a Frazzle style arty photo shoot soon!

Don't know when your side strips will get done though - Clive's busy for the next few weeks
