Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

I've always loved Cragar 5 spokes, never seen them on a P6 until now though. Now I want some!!!

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Nice! Love the way they fill out the rear arch (and then some, by the sound of it).

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Wow! a set of locking wheel-nuts is in your future...

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Very tasty - and period too 8)

They remind me of the old 5 spokes of the seventies as fitted IIRC to That custom mustang, Heart Breaker (The one with Vampirella murals)

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Thanks for all your nice comments guys!, Nice set on the Mustang picture, & the wheels aint bad either!

Yes they are similar to the original 5 spoke design by Cragar which are still available, mine have the slightly updated look I guess with the flat recessed spoke style as apposed to the original rounded spoke.
Locking nuts are well & truly fitted!, Not to much body mods, mainly on the D-post Chris, I did cut back the metal below the 2nd fixing bolt for the rear wings on each side by about 2~3", also modified the inner D-post to give more clearrence, trimmed the inner lip of the wing wheel arch flare & did the hand mod by pulling then out slightly, I have had one or two slight scrapes on the O/S wing scuff from just above the wheel arch lip, easily sorted...some how! Tyre's are 205/60/15, may try some old 195/50/15 to see how they look, defo no contact with the small profile but may look to thin...

Overall I love the look, just gotta make my mind up on paint colour, Monza red was my first choice but am actually thinking of keeping the 'baby poo' almond with maybe red leather inerior...Ahhhh the agony of choice!!

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

There's a Mustang in that picture? I hadn't noticed, I'll have another look...

I really like your wheels as well. :D

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

The work goes on, rear doors removed & rust cut out. N/S door bottom 6" removed & new panel welded in, O/S door not so bad, rot cut out & I made a new panel from sheet steel & butt welded in, tuned out ok, no warpage, filler hides it all...ha ha not really, be much better when the new paint goes on, hopefully this yr! 8)

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Whilst you're doing things to the doors, is there any mileage in forming a small spat / larger wheel arch lip at the rear edge of the door / sill? The repairs so far look extremely professional.

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Hi Chris,

I shall keep the standard wheel arch lip, seemed to have cured the rubbing so far, eventually I'll go with 195/55/15 tyres so should be even more clearance.

STOP PRESS, Passed it MOT yestarday! YEHAAAAA, Phew, my MOT man commented on how nice it was underneath & then after gunned up & the road for quick test! His words were : "We like this car Damian" even gave me discount on the MOT bill as its a V8! Well he has various V8's , supercharged 55 Chevy with 454 BB ci, 7.4 ltrs, about 6mpg! love it!

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Good quick progress there and the result we all crave! :D :D :D

Hi Guys,

Front wings off, primared last nite, will lay on some top coat tonite, Monza Red in cellulose, once fully dried, flatten back with 1500 wet n dry, machine mop, autoglym polish then some high definition Wax, will post the pics!..cheers Damian

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Think I'd leave the new cellulose a few weeks to harden before applying polish

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

I agree with Dave, paint tends to shrink for a while after drying, if you flat and polish too soon, you'll end up having to do it again in a few weeks.

Plenty of good quality wax on celly, it needs all the protection you can give it.

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Hi Rich / Dave,

Good point! I may go over with wet n dry 1500 then two more coats...hmmm not sure, I laid on 4 coats yesterday eve, for 'straigth out of the gun ' finish, there not too bad, being that my dusty garage is my spray booth, there is the odd speck of duct stuck in there but the 1500 will remove it with ease.
Should really shine after the final polishing stages is complete! Right now the rest of the car to do!

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

They don't look bad at all.

My suggestion would be to leave these now, do the rest of the car, put it all together, touch up any scratches etc that might happen during the fit up, then give it a week or two before flatting and polishing the whole car.

Feel free to totally ignore me though

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

I like the use of the pasting table for painting panels !
That looks like a good paint finish ,put on plenty of paint and polish when fully hardened

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Looking good! Is that genuine Monza Red?

It pays to keep the paint thinner around the light fittings, or the lights won't fit properly. I'm not sure how you get the right balance, but Jinx's lights are all a bit proud because of too much paint

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Hi guys,

Adam, Yep it Rover Monza Red, it looked a tad darker in the tin & wasnt sure if it was what I really wanted, now I can see its just the right shade I was after!
I have put the wings back on briefly as I went to small show yesterday, the side/indicator units whent on with out any paint chipping...phew!

Rich, good idea, may do most of the car before final flattening & moping, need to get more paint when funds permitt though so it might be a long stretch! I'll see how it goes!

The bloody bonnet had touched the top of the O/S wing & left a couple of ships :x easily touched in, gently pushed the wing out to get a better gap between it & the bonnet, my bonnet is best descibed as f*cked, has a huge split on the lower left hand side, but a chap who I met yesterday who lives fairly local to me has a few spares & offered to drop a bonnet to my house for a very very good price, he had a loverly series 1 Estate V8 in blue, plus several other V8's..nice bloke & loved the cragars! :D
