Re: P6 project: BW35 to LT77 manual box swap: the verdict

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Hi Guys, update on car, Bonnet finished & fitted, went on well without too much adjustment as I was on my own lifting it over the car to place it without scratching either! Looks soo much better with more' redness' on the car!
Have wet sanded the roof & polished half last nite, will finish tonite/ thurs eve, I find though even with using 1200went dry, warm soapy water with the soap in the bucket, it still leaves fine scratches on the paint, even with mopping with regular G3 paste, autoglym resin polish & dare I say it colour magic wax polish, you can still see the fine swirls.. all be it under 3 strip lights in my gagage, out side in day light then cant see it all! Maybe I'm being fussy but then as you can see in the first pic I polished the 'tester' circle with good old T-Cut...what a difference, no scratches, just smooth finish.... now T-cutting is blooming hard work but worth the results, tried with the mop but still not as good as good old hand application.
So maybe use T-Cut and do a small section at one time to reduce arm numbness and once all the panel is done then over with mop with G3 & bit of water spray, then polish & yes I do have a new pot of the ever so slightly costly Autoglym high definition Wax for a final gloss finish.
Any way enough blabbing on! some pics :D

OOh they do look nice 8)

Richard

His name is Richard as well by the way, in fact most of us are called Richard on here 8)

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Thanks Richard(s)

I think I've forgotten before, memory like a sieve! spelling just as bad too :)

Yes they should look good, the chrome surround is for the rear, ideally a NADA chrome surround mount would do the business but not sure how rare they mite be or who much!.
Ordered these from states plates: http://www.states-plates.com/store/plate-wizard/, about 10 days delivery, hopefully the boys in blue wont pull me....

Haha... I'm sure 75% of the members of this forum are Richard :D

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

1500 leaves much finer scratches than 1200

Looking good, if you do go to the trouble of T Cutting by hand I wouldn't use G3 on it after as it's quite harsh.

They used to do G7 specifically for celly which was like T Cut for machine use instead of G3, might still do it.

G10 or 3M Finesse or similar is good on the mop for fine swirls, really thin, even get a softer mop for it

It's hard to get all the swirls gone under tube lighting but well worth it outside 8)

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Just like Grim said, you could even go to 2000 grit if you can find some.

I use G10 followed by the Autoglym SRP, that seems to do the job. I finish with Colonite wax which seems to last for months.

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

2nd that, it's looking really good.

So just the doors left to do now ?

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

I have to use 2000 for all my work but probably overkill as Rik says.

Dam expensive for nearly bald paper too

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

1500 should be fine with t-cut on cell, and i find by hand is best :)
Oh and yes your car is looking the nads! :D

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Hi Guys and all the Richards !

Thanks for tips and nice comments!!

I may try some G10, its available from my local paint supplier in town, I did use 1500 after 1200 to get the 'better finish.

As you said it'll look fine in day light, my strip lights do it no justice LOL,

Rich (webmaster) So you use the G10 after the wet sanding with 1500? and then Autoglym SRP, then waxing

Cheers Damian

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Whilst all my jobs are hand flatted and shaped (I'm old fashioned in my approach) I'll not be polishing by hand

Flat, then mop, then fine mop and wax by hand to complete :)

You can't beat a machine polish

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Machine mop is the way forward but depending on how energetic i'm feeling later I may T-Cut by hand to finish the roof, then try the G10 if I can get to the paint shop in time tonite! Is that do-able do you think?

Yeah Rich, 4 doors, door shuts and the sill cover left to prep and paint..then it all be RED!... :D

Next strip interior, paint floor pans, get a woolies re-dye kit for the leather & trim, new carpets & door furflex..obviously this probably be after Christmas/ Jan/Feb 2012, Got to sort the engine first to fix iits smoking / oil consuming habit

One day I'll finish my cottage! LOL, I am having new stone window sills fitted & the whole front re-pointed so cant grumble, anyway Rome wasn't built in a day!

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

G10 might not be quite course enough to got straight from wet sand, but it's worth a try. Grim mentioned G7, which may be a good inbetween stage.

I use G10 to remove swirl marks on old paintwork, haven't really done much fresh paint for a little while, most has been clear over base and that's usually good enough straight from the gun. (well good enough to match the rest of the paint on a modern).

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

I'd skip the T Cut (hard work) stage and I use G3 on a compounding mop then change to a polishing mop for G10 both stages finished in more water than you start with making the material finer still :D

After that the wax is only for protection, not finish.

I haven't bought G7 for years now as I rarely use celly (usually 2K) and the G3/G10 combo does the trick on both.
T Cut kills the shine on 2K due to the ammonia so I don't keep that now either :)

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Hi Guys, Bought the G10 finishing compound, Started with G3 then G10 with a fine water spray, big difference! also went over the bonnet again with G10, even better :D
Will now go over the boot as this has fine scratches, glad I sorted it, thanks for all your advice ! much appreciated! :) T-cut was only a possible option but yes to much work!
For a change some pics, tooks these this morning in natural day light, cheers all , have a good weekend, oh may fit new US style No plates.

Richard, you make me want to learn how to paint. That looks seriously good, and the debadged bonnet is a slick detail 8)
