Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

That is looking really smart, I love this pic

Looks finished !

Oil burn at startup could be oil getting past valve stem seals.

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

What valve stem seals would they be Rick? Find me a part no and I'll buy you a set!

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

As I understand it, the P6 V8 heads don't have stem seals, due to the way the rocker gear is oiled, am I right? There isn't loads of oil sloshing around the top end. But what if the valve guides were worn, is it not feasible the small amount of oil that gathers when the engine's standing could in theory seep down between the valve stem and its guide, causing the problem described, especially if there isn't a stem seal? :?:

That explains it then, crap engine design

Basically what I mean is oil burn at startup is usually oil leaking down into the cylinders from the valves, nigh on impossible for oil to leak up past the rings when the engine isn't running.

Only other thing is oil being breathed in from crankcase, that's usually shows itself at high rpm, or overrun.

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

have you finished the body yet? Cant wait to see it all done :)

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Damian congrats so far its all coming togeather nicley :D abbsalutley Luvin it :D :D those wheels do look the biz :!: :!:

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Hi Guy, thanks for your kind comments, yep I do love my alloys too :p

Just painted the roof, a few spots of dust stuck in there but will all disapear with 1500 wet n dry wet sanding & final machine mopping.

Have sourced a good 2nd hand bonnet thanks to a great guy called Terry Richards who lives local to me in Somerset, very helpfull & genuine person with a great collection of P6 rovers! AM half way through paint stripping ready for paint!

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

This is looking really good!! What paint stripper are you using by the way? This is seriously tempting me to paint mine monza red now, but with a vinyl roof and p5b rostyles

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Hi Customknight,

Thanks!

Have used Niteromores Paint stripper on the rear wings and bonnet, takes time but save a lot of dust!

Monza red is great colour for this car, will set off the wheels & all the chrome/stainless steel trim nicely.

P5 Roystle will look very nice indeed, maybe with a USA type of narrow band white wall tyre ?

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Well I wanted Jenson wire wheels but they're like hens teeth so on to the p5's! I'm thinking of some White letter Tyres to set it apart from the rest to be honest. I'll do a photoshop tonight and see what it looks like.

The problem is that I adore the tobacco leaf p6's with the p5 wheels on. It's just such a boring colour :(

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Hi customknight (sorry Damien)

If you finish up using P5 Rostyles, why not alter the paint scheme - leave the rims chrome, but reverse the cchrome and black in the centres, so that the ribs are black and the depressions chrome?

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Just read through this thread!

When the red is finished off she will look amazing! Very good quality paint job as well by the looks of it.

The wheels really suit it.

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Just goes to show what can be done at home with the basic kit and a lot of effort. The great thing about solid colours is you don't need to get it perfect out of the gun, just put plenty on, then sand it flat and buff it, it's hard work but you do get a near perfect finish.

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Hi Ste & Rich,
Thanks for your kind comments :D Its certianly a lot of work but as you say Rich you can achieve high standard of finish with graft and on a budget! hopefully it'll not flake off lol:
The worse part is when actually spraying the spray dust is like 9/11 dust cloud...so far I have got away with no heater in the garage so can open the main & rear door to vent the spray & choke my neighbours (there very understanding!) But once the cold sets in need I'll both heaters on to keep it warm to avoid the dreaded bloom effect. It should be ok, have done it before with still great results!
Stripped and laid on some high build primar on my new 2nd hand bonnet, will sand this back with 1200 wet n dry & then another good couple of coats, wet sand again ready for the Monza Red, really excited to get the bonnet on as it'll improve the car so much!
Next the door shuts & four doors to prep & paint! oh then just the sill covers to do also in red!

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Looking great there!

I think I've found one too and guess what colour it is.....yup, monza red! Will put a new thread up when I either get it or don't!

Hats off to you mate, it looks really good. :)

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Yey! Its a great colour on these cars, defo better the almond poo! I think British Leyand either suffured from bad colour blindness or had a cruel sense of humour to sell these & other cars in the range of lets face it sh*t colours...Mexico brown, tabacco, harvest gold, lavander blue etc! ahh well cant be helped, cant be helped! But to all those who like those colours then please dont be offended, Im just having a joke! I did actually think of keeping the Almond Poo with a red leather interiour but the Red won the day!
Anyway Monza Red is the way forward Rich, my particular shade is ROV5113M paint code, thats cellulose. There is a slightly darker shade aswell but I prefer this.
Look forward to your progress mate!

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Haha  I know what you mean about some of those colours, definately an 'in' joke at the manufacturers! However I do like tobacco leaf with the brown roof and rostyles, but only in that combination.

Thanks for the info, I'll be doing mine in base and clear at work but i'll give my supplier that code and see where it leads :)

Can't wait until you've got all the bits done, I really want to see it, we'll almost be twins

It's sunny....get into that garage and get those doors done boy!!

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted! time for bodywork

Well doors will be next after the door shuts that is, all four wings will be removed, door catches etc removed, prepped & painted, still need to do more 'technical modyfing' to the inner wheel arches/D-post as still scraping over big bumps, but then again my rear end is too bouncy, took off my new-ish monro shocks, bled them thru but they remain soft on the down stroke, good excuse to get new decent versions. Anyway bonnet sprayed today, will give a day then go over with 1200 then three more coats.
redbonnet.jpg

try not too notice the bloody bits stuck in the new paint.... :x these wil come out with 1500 wet n dry.
