My V8's makeover 2011.A respray, seat and webasto roof refurb

Hi all.

Well the time has come to start preparing for my daily driver V8's overdue makeover.

A brief history so far.
Bought in about 2000 as an abandoned project!!
The previous elderly owner had between 1985 and 1995 repanelled and repainted it,rebuilt susp, brakes and eng, then stopped due to ill health.
There were no seats,door/trim panels, carpets, these had been damaged when his shed at the bottom of his garden was flooded!!
I finished it off to the spec that I wanted,so I fitted new carpets from coverdale, found a great condition complete interior trim panel set inc bronze leather flat pleat seats with E.T's for £80,3 spoke wood moto-lita,real wood door/dash trim, irvin static belts front and rear, fitted a full huntsman tudor webasto,14" rostyles, mudflaps, lucas chrome fog lights and towbar.
As finished in 2000.

It has been my daily driver ever since and as such is now showing signs of rot on all the bodywork panels except the boot and bonnet which I will be using.
I have got a full set of 14 rot free panels,a pair of nos bumpers and overriders,a nice spare set of bronze leather seats to redye, and I am following a lead from Mark Gray for some correct material to recover the huntsman roof and sunroof.
IF??? ,all goes to plan,I will have had the panels repainted,,"Yes I am keeping it white" :) The seats redyed and the roof material all ready and stored for a 3 wk marathon mini resto over the Easter/May bank hols.
When the panels come off I will sort any rust issues I find,re-underseal then fit the new one, have got some new rubber seals that will be fitted if I find any of the old ones need replacing.
Its all too easy to get carried away and do more
Like I was thinking of pulling the eng/box and redoing the engine bay, cleaning the eng and box, fitting new seals and gaskets, but as the eng bay is never going to be a show stopper and the eng/box aint broke at the moment, and its my daily come rain, snow, mud etc,I can sort that out as and when the eng has to come out.
Right off to dig out the spare panels, and strip the doors down to the shell so my painter can take them as he wants them.

I like your car :) looking forward to seeing it get a bit of spoiling 8)

Can you ask your painter to do that bit on the bottom of the front wings for me by the sill? It troubles me

I'll be following your progress as usual

Worry ye no more!!
That will be done the brown sill colour,,,but?? I dont know if I should re-do it and the sills in just paint so it can be polished or stonechip and then painted??

Just dug out the panels from the garage loft.
BTW! The yellow one is TR6.

S1's were body colour and same gloss finish,S2's when sills are black were satin, but those rare ones with brown I have seen have all been a gloss finish.
I have a spare sill or 2 so may experiment!!

Good luck Pilkie, looks very nice now, will be stunning when finished! like the 14" rostyles, I think the sill covers would be better in white to match the body colour, but thats just my opinion! cheers Damian

I think it's really odd the effect the sill colour has on the P6 - It changes the look of the car completely to my eye...

Could be Chris?
The ones ive seen may not have been original,as I am sure mine currently isnt,so I will be trying to get either the correct brown or at least a good match to the roof.

Alreet Pilkie,my sill covers are shiny brown and dont look over the top,i think it looks right and really looks well matching the huntsman roof and quarters and the bootmount,it breaks it up and looks really looks the dogs dangley bits.

IMHO I reckon colour coded sills make the P6 look 7mths pregnant. I havnt seen one with a huntsman sill and roof but sounds rather special

LOL, each to their own, I think the black sill covers make its appearence look as if the bottom 3" inches have been removed, imagine an E-type or MkII Jag with a black sill line from the door bottoms down !!YUK. here's my old P6 from 2007 with colour coded sills & decent 15" alloys. I hated the spare wheel on the boot as it looked bloody awfull & you couldnt see jack sh*t out of the rear window, when I removed it & the tow bar & front fog lights, too much clutter, the boot was dented with weight & the paint was a different shade, I left it off until I sold it.

Good to see the V8 getting some tlc. I like the contrast of the white and hunstman. The contrasting sills make the car look longer and lower. My car has hunstman sills

so I'm slightly biased :D Mine are glossy too like Bri's but they do take a bit of punishment so something tougher with a satin finish would probably be the sensible option......

That works but I think it's because the car looks to be lowered. Actually I think S1's look right with painted sills because they appear an older car in general. S2's however, with the side-strips & other facelift's normally look bulbous without the black/Huntsman sill.

I've only ever seen them as you describe, not keen on the stonechip option mentioned as it resembles the 80s car dealer nosh and splosh era for me but you could always have them satin huntsman to be different
Experimenting is the way to go till you're happy :D

Edited. I've given this some thought and I meant to say, on 'Proper' cars I've only seen them as you described
I've seen some right sights over the years

I think it very much depends on the body colour as to whether the sills need to be black/brown or body colour. Monza red like mine would look too much with red sills, but I like Damians colour matched sills on his old Lunar Grey car. I'd go one step further and weld up the jacking point holes too, they're neither use nor ornament anyway.

I also think a car looks right or wrong depending on the choice of wheels fitted, and also to a degree, the ride height. I think a standard car with steel wheels and standard hubcaps looks "pregnant" (sic), but the same car with a nice set of alloys/rostyles/minilites looks much better. The ride height in my opinion has a bearing on the look of a car too, perky ride height, esp on the rear can make a car look less bulbous, but a saggy rear end can make it look worse. I guess its subjective though...
