My mean green hornet

Dave to clarify, under braking now everything appears to be back to normal.
It's only at idle when i pump the brake that the revs increase slightly.
Mixture is set by colourtune.
Rev drop from park to drive is now only 150 from 800 to 650, don't think i'll get any better until I rebuild the carbs..
Fair point about the PAS,
I was just unsure if there could be a situation where a vacuum leak for example could affect both the brakes and the power steering..
Thinking out loud really :)

That's what it should do, pumping the brake operates the servo, which weakens the mixture, and the weaker the mixture the higher the idle speed.

Ok that's great then
Thought it could have been a leak weakening the mixture.
Thanks for all the advice on the rev drop mixture etc Harvey, miles nicer to drive now :)
Now to sort my power steering out
Jim

Today this

the remains of my throttle linkage was binned and replaced with the correct parts :D

So now there's no play and where the rods join there's no angle change!

It did take longer than it should have, as one of the split pins deformed and I couldn't find any spares the right size at home last night..
So I had to pick some up this morning and finish the job.

Quick question. Are the two power steering hoses meant to have a bracket holding them to the heater bulkhead area?
They get in the way when doing jobs and just seem to float over the top of the linkage..

I think you'll find that's what the threaded stud on the rear throttle bush bracket is for.

Having just ordered a PAS reservoir filter, I have a question.
Those who have changed them, did you find that you needed to replace the seal at the same time due to breakage?
Reading a thread of Ron's from a few years back makes it sound quite possible it could break when removing the lid?
Carb rebuild kit and new air filters arrived in the post, so i'll be getting on with that in the meantime :)

Our tuning man, Pete Palmer, is in Farncombe, about 1/2 a mile from where I live. He really enjoys finely balancing our cars and is a fount of good sense and wisdom.

Might be worth bringing your car up for a tweak with him, he may well spot something amiss.

PM me if you want his phone number

Cheers

Hi Jim.
When I replaced mine, it took quite a while to figure out how exactly to get the darn thing off, and it did seem that I would at least break something.
If I recall correctly, the secret was to use a long screwdriver with a wide but fairly thin tip.
I cant remember the lever point, but the key was to have the tip JUST under the lip of the lid.
Lots of gentle prising and lifting.
I did somewhat damage the tiny little rubber washer that goes under the locking nut, as it was seemingly squashed into place.

I just took the car out for a 'quick' spin.
One hour later I arrive back
I hadn't had the time to test drive properly since doing the throttle linkage, and have been driving my girl's mx5 everywhere..
Wowo, shockingly good acceleration and extremely smooth all throughout the entire rev range.
I thought she was fast before :!:

Still to rebuild the carbs and fit the free flow air filters, perhaps coupling with a slightly easier breathing stainless silencer.

The other reason for taking her out was to see if topping up the (low) PAS fluid made any difference.
No was the resounding answer there
She was also pulling to the right quite annoyingly but I think that was down to a slightly flat tyre
Hopefully the new filter will solve it

Thanks Brenten, I'll be sure to exercise some patience when removing the reservoir lid then
And thanks Nick, I shall bear him in mind for when I've rebuilt the carbs etc.

Power steering filter now changed.
The reservoir lid came off rather easier than expected, seal fully intact.

I syringed out enough fluid to change the filter, and decided it was good enough to re-use.

The NOS replacement filter is a little different to what was in there prior:

A perfect fit nonetheless.
Steering is much better again, but not quite up to standard.
It can intermittently lose its assistance.
Perhaps it needs a bleed?
The belt is tight but looks a little tired.
What else to look for?

Jim

Whoever previously painted parts of my car loved the look of orange peel.
Actually I know who it was as I have all the history
But it seems more a case of that looks good enough, the old boy won't even notice!

Knowing that the respray can't be any time soon, and not wishing my project to look so obviously like a project,
I've begun wet sanding the paintwork.
Clearly time consuming and I don't have a machine polisher, yet!

It will all be worth it
