Hi Johnny,
Was the base unit solid? Could it go to someone with good mechanicals and a nice interior to build a new car? Maybe with a tax free vin...
Personally I feel a car should only be broken if its no longer viable to restore, in the case of P6s if he base unit is rotten.
Did I feel a twinge of guilt while I was bidding on the doors? Yes a bit, but my 2000 would have been one step nearer as new for it had I won. Funny, Ive had mine since I was 17 as well (Im 30 now).
I understand some cars (the bad ones) need to be broken to keep the better ones running, but its not a long term prosect!
I pobably would have tried to sort that one out, but Im a sentimental fool and spent another £2000 on running restos on a '72 2000sc last year, after having both sills replaced the year before, and new seats, carpets and doors to come this year. Oh and the 3500 I got from 'free to a good home' (ftagh anyone?) is have its inner wheel arched done at the moment so Im probably not a great example of rational restoration!
No one should be jealous of making a bit from this, just sad theres one less that could go on the road. I hope the cash from this one buys you a minter John! Spend it well.
Matt
