Leather Trim - eBay

gasp... £510 !!!!

Right. Well the good old Paprika is a w/e runner with MOT - so as I don't have a family (yet) this means I'm going sell my rear seats.. then the passenger seat (ditch the missus first).... then the cards.... gloveboxes... ....erm

Just the doors, wings, wheels, rear lights, radio and trim came to exactly £1199.

I intend to sell all the other bits yet and am already on the lookout for another!!! :p

I am well and truly shell shocked!!

Johnny. :D :D :D

Don't get addicted to it, there'll be no Rover P6 s left!

You did very well there I honestly didn't think you'd make that much.

No probs.

I will post a new thread on here when I list them.

I will be putting another long list on there - probably Saturday afternoon.

NICE WHEELS MATE!! :)

I have a niggling doubt that it was wrong to have broken such a well preserved car on the strength of mechanical faults as all the buying guides I have ever read say that these are the least important aspects of buying a P6. Can the loom really have needed replacing unless it had caught fire at some point? Engines & gearboxes don't seem in short supply & are not difficult to swap & a decent set of 2nd hand carpets wouldn't break the bank either. As for tyres & brakes, these must be regarded as consumables anyway.
If you have to pay for all this to be done at once then I can see the drawbacks as well as anyone, but surely someone in the P6 world including somebody in the club would have recognised the potential & have paid £1K+ for this car in its complete condition (& rare colour) & replaced/repaired the mechanical components?
Spoilers? Surely not a Rover option. I can think of nothing worse to fit to a P6 unless it's for track use only of course, with all brightwork removed & really fat boots fitted. Many an XJS has been ruined with these abominations. SD1's too, but I don't like them anyway.
Discuss this as I'm interested to hear what other members think though bear in mind I know that a car can be worth much more broken than whole. I just think this particular car deserved more.
Johnny! When I added the 1st reply to this thread I didn't know that you were the one who was actually breaking the car. I read most of the ebay questions so think a lot of people are of the same opinion, not to mention other club members.
All I'm saying is, offer the complete car first & if nobody pays the money you want, then break it.
Perhaps I'm just too sentimental.

I've an 2200 coming on Saturday which I was going to possibly rebuild, but really wanted the interior for a V8 I have, but got a decent black interior (both front seat need a little work only) .. break or rebuild will depend on structure -- and err if breaking you could have had the loom. a well...

Well I certainly think Johnny should be banned from accessing the free to a good home section of the forum.

Sending your P6 to Johnny has got to be on a par with letting Doctor Von Hagens look after your kids :)

I didnt do it as a service to anyone else - but try using the same arguement to the people that DO break P6's all the time.

If it werent for the ones that were broken up, you wouldnt have spares to keep YOURS on the road!

For all the people that are upset at what I did, there are many people whom are very satisfied with the bits that I sold them.

Swings and roundabouts.

Johnny.

P.S. Feel free to ban me from the 'free to good home'. I have no intentions of making it my full time business. IanP6man was the second person to contact the 'seller'. Are you all completely sure that HE would NOT have done the same thing? Next you'll be telling me that breakers do it for the love of the marque!!

???

Keep going johnny,
You are creating rarity value!
has anyone gone to get the S1 3500 in Pencoed that was in the Free section, that had a good leather interior, I had some pics somewhere, will try to dig them out
Cheers
AL

Johnny must like P6s or he would not appear so often on the forum. I'm sure he had to rationalise long and hard about the V8 before breaking it. I broke a VIP that was so bad that only a certifiable lunatic would have tried to restore it. Not all cars are worth pouring money into.

Johnny's parts will give new life to others cars --- mine included as I am one of his customers!

John Larkin.

Thank you John and Alimorg!

One thing I have noticed is that everyone initially seemed positive - until I made some money!?

ROVERING MEMBER.

Without sounding rude - find out what we mean before 'writing off' P6 spoilers. No, infact watch eBay this Saturday and watch the world go mad for them!

Also you mention offering the car as it stands - first. NOT ONE person offered me any more than a couple of hundred quid. Now do you think they were trying to save another - or rip someone off?

The man that bought the interior is fitting it to a P6 that he has owned since he was 17 - he's now 44. Forgeting the money I have made, think about how chuffed HE is with that trim and how much better THAT car will be.

Then think of the one with the new doors, new wings, new bumpers, etc etc. PARTS THAT WE CANNOT READILY AND EASILY SOURCE ANY MORE.

Next time you hear about someone buying a lovely interior for their pride and joy, or buying some good doors for their resto......... think where they came from.

IT AINT GOING TO BE SOME OLD RUST BUCKET WITH 200, 000 MILES ON THE CLOCK!

Then again - if you know of a rust bucket that isn't fit for the road - let me know, I might just be interested.....

I don't think it's true that anyone is being inspired by feelings of jealousy Johnny after all you did all the hard work listing the items, posting them etc. Also, I did ask why you breaking a car in such good condition before anyone was aware of the final value of the auctions.

You've called for proper debate of subjects on here many times before and that's only what's happening on a very interesting subject. There are certainly no personal attacks involved on my part. Perhaps some of the other hundreds of members who log on and say nothing week in week out would like to contribute? (You don't have to sign up to watch you know you naughty little boys)

Where did you offer the car as it stands then? I missed any postings on here. If you only recieved offers of only £200 then more fool them and I reckon even a dealer would have made a more reasnoble offer as they are always intrested in genuine examples even if they need recomissioning.

I think maybe Rovering Member got the police spoiler confused with tailgate spoilers more commonly seen on modern cars, a fair mistake, and like you say we'll all see an example on Saturday when the world goes mad!

BB.

I didnt say anyone was jealous - and I didnt say that I hadnt been questioned before the end of the auctions. As you quite rightly said - I WAS!

It just seems strange that all of a sudden, people now speak out and think it was the wrong thing to do?

£200? I asked some of the interested parties on eBay. Then again, knowing that everyone involved in this thread knew about the auctions - why didnt they contact me and even ask?

Dealers? Where? Who would want an old car that has no tax, no MOT and doesnt run. Needs a carpet, loom, brakes etc etc etc. I went into my Rover dealers last year with the Lunar Grey P6 (LPG) when we were having the MG ZT serviced. The majority of the staff there were interested because they didnt know what it was (young spotty faced kids) - & the older ones just ignored it! I was GUTTED!

Anyway, top and bottom of it is - the vast majority has been sold. Cant say I would actively seek out another, but if the opportunity arose again soon with another 'modernish' P6 - I'd most probably do it again.

Remember, I have owned and ran P6's - I love em! I wouldn't strip every single one. Just like Joseph, IanP6 etc etc (but on a much smaller scale).

Cheers, Johnny. :)

Johnny

I was thinking of the kind of dealer who advertise in the coffee table type classic car mags. They are the ones who know the true value of an unmolested classic. (I suppose up to the danglies in water might not count as genuinely unmolested)

Anyway I thinks it's a shame that it had to be broken up but it's only because no one recognised it's value not because your a P6 dismantling fiend!

BB

Hi Johnny,

Was the base unit solid? Could it go to someone with good mechanicals and a nice interior to build a new car? Maybe with a tax free vin...

Personally I feel a car should only be broken if its no longer viable to restore, in the case of P6s if he base unit is rotten.

Did I feel a twinge of guilt while I was bidding on the doors? Yes a bit, but my 2000 would have been one step nearer as new for it had I won. Funny, Ive had mine since I was 17 as well (Im 30 now).

I understand some cars (the bad ones) need to be broken to keep the better ones running, but its not a long term prosect!

I pobably would have tried to sort that one out, but Im a sentimental fool and spent another £2000 on running restos on a '72 2000sc last year, after having both sills replaced the year before, and new seats, carpets and doors to come this year. Oh and the 3500 I got from 'free to a good home' (ftagh anyone?) is have its inner wheel arched done at the moment so Im probably not a great example of rational restoration!

No one should be jealous of making a bit from this, just sad theres one less that could go on the road. I hope the cash from this one buys you a minter John! Spend it well.

Matt

Indeed I will Matt!

With regards the base unit - yes it will be for sale in the next week to a fortnight or so.

I have an interested party whom shall remain nameless....

If they do not want it, I will first of all give everyone the opportunity before placing it on the dreaded EBAY!!

It will be going cheap considering there is an engine, g/box and axle.

John. (Johnny). :D
