Leather Trim - eBay

Johnny!
Forgive me if I'm wrong but I also seem to recall you be-moaning the fact the lack of lively discussion on the forum.
I couldn't care less how much money you made (I predicted in my first reply the seats would fetch a high price) but I say again, all buying guides stress that mechanicals are the least of your worries with a P6 & that this one deserved better. Also again! Brakes & tyres are consumables & good, 2nd hand carpets are, dare I say it, Cheap. Engines & 'boxes can also be picked up very reasonably.
I wouldn't have bought it as I have enough cars on my plate but an offer to real P6 people such as club members may have elicited a worthy price (I agree that £200 would have been a feeble offer). Forumers only found out about the car when you pointed the way to the seat auction after which they & ebayers were asking why you were breaking it & you told the forum it had needed too much work & the ebayers it was already too late to make an offer for the complete car. If the whole car had been offered via the club someone with the necessary MAY have taken her on for a price you were satisfied with. If not, as I said, then break her. Would a couple of weeks really have made that much difference. IanP6man may have done the same thing but I wouldn't have approved of that either.
Good items can come from 200,000 milers though not in such a complete package which is why I still think she warranted a bit more than immediate breaking.
I was thinking of bolt-on spoilers but I have a hunch that even when I see what a police spoiler looks like, I won't be going mad for it. As far as I'm concerned, spoilers do for road cars exactly what it says on the tin. :p
Alimorg........ Rarity value is alright as long as you don't want a P6 (or any classic car) as regular transport & are more worried about investment potential. We all saw what the '80's boom did to the classic world & it wasn't a pretty sight. P6's are already rare enough to be admired & commented upon wherever WE go & they're better off in the hands of enthusiasts than speculators (Though I'm NOT suggesting that anyone in the forum is any less than an enthusiast).

RM.

It's never too late. If you are so dedicated to saving Rovers, then you should have opened your mouth alot earlier.

I have to say that you are also stating that you wouldnt have bought it because you have too many. So who do you speak on behalf of?

Anyway - the cars mostly gone now as I have said.

I am very much open to a good debate as BB said. If you are all wondering why I dont seem to be joining in much - that's easy, I have a certain viewpoint which I stuck by - and some dont agree.

This is a discussion for everyone else, I haven't got much more to say!

However, for all those who have been affected by this issue, please call the 24 hour helpline number at the end.

Wow this is all getting a bit heated!
Just thought I would mention that we have all seen Johnnys posts on here about the car, he did have a go at re-commissioning it, but found that it was too much, and to be quite honest I dont think that you would get more than a couple of hundred quid for a non running non tax exempt 3500 with no carpet no matter what the condition or who you offered it to. Just take a look at the prices they are fetching (or not) on ebay, if its got no MOT its worth nothing.
As for speculators buying classic cars, that has been proved to be an idiotic idea in the 80s and will never happen again, after all they are only cars, a mass produced (and in todays climate disposable) comodity I will admit that some cars are worth a lot of money (Bugatti Royal springs to mind) but the majority of valuable cars are coach built one offs built by respected companies, and yes some P6s do fall into this category, the Graber Coupe and Convertible for example should be worth quite a bit, but this is because they were hand built by Graber and not mass produced by rover, your everyday P6 cannot be compared to these cars and should be treated as you would treat any old car If it gets too much scrap it (unless of course it has some sentimental value). P6's are quite common (The Rarity thing was meant as a joke, my P6 is used every single day of the week), In fact I have heard that more P6's now survive than SD1s, and when was the last time you saw a Hillman Hunter, or a Maxi, or even a Mk4 Cortina on the road, come to think of it its a while since I have seen a Sierra! All good practical 'classic' cars (even the sierra was mould breaking in its time), none of which are tax exempt so they will not survive.
P6's are just old cars, but old cars that I happen to be very fond of, however they are never going to be worth antything more than what they are, an interesting alternative to a 10 year old Mondeo
Cheers
Al
P.S. Johnny like your new avatar

It's a very good thing that more P6's survive than SD1's as they deserve it more.
Even if I had wanted to open my mouth a lot earlier, I had already read the replys to the ebayers questions, including the one which said "Too late, sorry!"............But I wouldn't have bought it, No! (maybe if I didn't already have 5 cars) So I raise the issue for the shy & retiring member who is regretting the passing of the very project car he/she was waiting for & if he/she doesn't exist then the car would have been dismantled anyway & the whole discussion is academic. But that is one of the functions of a forum so has done no harm & got a few people thinking & writing.
Anyway, we all have different opinions which we'll no doubt stick by & will agree to disagree & I have many niggling doubts in life which I don't lose a minutes sleep over. And besides that, our local Samaritans all drive P6's & agree with me...........Don't yours?
I hope your next gas guzzler is a Brahmer. ;)

p.s........Yes! Thats a great avatar. Can anyone tell me how would I go about getting an avatar?.....................Scrub that question. As you can see, I've found out. :)

hi,
as my name has been mentioned twice, i will have a say. i do not have the room either to store many cars, although i do not like to break really good ones, but i have and been fortunate enough to have sold three unwelded original base units to people who have re-built them. i have two at the moment if anybody is interested a mark 1 V8 and a 27,000 mile 2200SC unwelded and minus it's engine and box as that is how it came to me, so anybody out there want an excellent base unit. i have two more in for breaking as they are past redemption, but i cannot store them forever. yes i will get rid of them eventually if nobody wants them, i am trying to start and run a business and cannot afford to be sentimental, but i will, like the others out there selling bits, keep other p6's on the road

Hi Ianp6man.
All I'm really saying is, if a car comes along that's immaculate other than mechanically, offer it complete for a few days (on the forum?) first & maybe an enlightened individual with the readys & the spare parts will give you the right money for it. If not, then break it. It must be less work for you to lose it as a lump than to dismantle it & well preserved complete cars must be approaching some kind of premium as they get rarer.

hi,
i agree with you, and i wasn't having a go at anyone, i was just wondering why my name was fetched up. i do not like to see good base units broken up when there are too many around that swallow up to much time and money to weld back together. i have been fortunate and the three people that have had the base units from me have also saved time and money and started from an excellent sound shell. we shall see if this latest car shall be back on the road, i can throw in another car for free that has a 2200 SC engine in and will go into the 27,000 mile shell. there is no engine, gearbox, doors, seats or carpets in it, but these can be taken from the other car. anybody interested. £200.00

GOOD DISCUSSION LADS , I MUST ADMIT JOHNNYS RIGHT TO HAVE BROKEN THE P6. SOMETIMES THESE RESTO JOBS ARE JUST TO DEAR AND WHILE SOME WILL SAY ITS SAD TO LOSE ANOTHER WE WONT ! THE FACT REMAINS THAT THE BASE UNIT IS STILL UP FOR GRABS. SO IF SOMEONE USES IT TO BUILD ON THEN BINGO THE P6'S BACK FROM THE DEAD AND ANOTHER FEW ARE MADE BETTER USING THE PARTS SOLD :D

JUST A THOUGHT GUYS

PETER :D
