    Sump plug torque V8

I think I have found the answer. 33ft lbs. I got this from workshop.manuals.com. It refers to Landrover V8. I suppose it is the same but it does not mention year of manufacture. I got thoughtful about this because my MX5 has an aluminium engine and of course bolt torque is critical.

    Sump plug torque V8

I have just read lots about V8 engine sump plugs but cannot see any reference to recommended torque. I usually just do it up tight. Not very scientific. What value is correct. Frank

    Dash mat

Thanks, that's a good thought, I have shopped there before.

    Dash mat

Does anyone know where I can buy a dash mat for my 1971 P6B?

    De dion tube P6B

Yes I think Demetris is right. It is not entirely laziness on my part but I prefer to disturb as little as possible on an elderly car. I also find it a bit of a hassle in jacking the car up to an appropriate height and blocking it safely up there. I am now awaiting parts from Scotts. I also...

    De dion tube P6B

Thankyou. I have identified the oil seal retainer and it all looks quite straightforward. The last time this was done I don't think the seal was replaced. Hence the leak and the rotted gaiter. Frank H.

    De dion tube P6B

Is it possible to extract the centre section of the tube without removing the whole unit from the car? I only need to extract the inner (ie withdraw it to the right ) so that I can replace the dust gaiter. I have recollections of a New Zealand member commenting on this some years ago.

    De dion tube P6B

Thankyou, this probably explains why the dust gaiter rotted away. I don't find the workshop manual very helpful on this matter of seals at the right hand end. I have an old tube from a parts car and cannot see how the seal should fit on the right hand end. There is a small lip machined on the...

    De dion tube P6B

Thanks Ron I am not even sure that it would be an advantage but as I have to strip it all down any way it was just a thought. Frank

    De dion tube P6B

Not really a new topic but the gaiters on my De Dion tube have gone again, albeit after many miles. Oil is dribbling out in unseemly amounts. I saw someone sometime ago ask if it is practical to refill early oiled filled tubes with grease.( When being overhauled of course.) I could not find a...

    rover 416 sli

Thankyou for your replies. I don't actually need another car anyway, it was just interest. I'm going to have a cold shower and forget it. thanks again Frank Howard.

    rover 416 sli

To set my credentials first I own a 1971 P6B and have owned two P5s in the past. I live in Tasmania and a fellow in the village has a Rover 416 sli for sale. This car is a private English import, has done some 140,000kms and appears to be in good order. However there are no spare parts available...

    windscreen replacement

Thankyou for the helpful replies. Yes, I have to replace the rubbers as they are totally perished. Hopefully I can get the screen out in one piece but I have access to a new one if necessary. Just awaiting the new rubbers from Scotts.

    windscreen replacement

I am set to replace the front windscreen on my P6B and read that I must drill out the rivets holding the stainless steel finishing trim. Where are they? How do I get at them?

    V8 Oil pressure.

Thankyou for the comments. The problem is very irregular so step one will be to replace the oil pressure switch and take it on from there. Most of my driving is highway work and for that the light remains off. Frank H.

    V8 Oil pressure.

I'm not sure whether to worry or not but my oil warning light comes on somewhat intermittently once the engine has reached full and normal operating temperature. The oil pressure gauge behaves normally, ie about 40 psi and drops as the revs drop to idle. I have a new filter and oil, Penrite...

    Wiper delay

Thankyou for your help. I now know what I'm looking for. My wipers failed to park and when switched to delay they only swept about half the screen and then stopped. I'll tackle the unit again this coming weekend.

    Wiper delay

I have my wiper delay on the bench and am confused about the location of this piece of foam. Referring to the photos, which are excellent thankyou, surely the large coil spring keeps the diaphragm pushed down and the contacts closed. Mine delay has no trace of foam at all.

    Waterless Coolant

Thankyou for your comments. I read an article/ad. in Practical Classics magazine about Evans Waterless coolant and wondered if there were any major advantages in using it. I don't have overheating problems in my P6B and change the coolant regularly. (every three years) although this week I am...

I wondered if anyone had any views or experience with waterless coolant in the Rover V8

    Vacuum Advance

Thankyou, I was assuming, incorrectly, that the take off was on the manifold side of the butterfly. Hence the confusion. It certainly makes a difference with the vacuum advance working correctly.

    Vacuum Advance

I have just fitted a new vacuum advance to my P6B. The timing has been set according to the manual ie 6 degrees btdc. I am curious because on idle, there is no detectable suction on the tube from the carb. I would have expected a vast reduction in manifold pressure. On opening the throttle just...

    Distributor woes

Thanks for the feedback. My next query. I see Phil didn't see the base plate move when he sucked on the vacuum pipe. Neither did I. Is it possible to move the base plate by just sucking or does this require more effort ie considerable manifold suction. I removed the base plate and could move the...

    Distributor woes

I have read Phil's comments about his distributor with interest. I have now checked mine and find that whilst I have suction the base plate does not move. However the engine runs smoothly throughout the rev range and I get about 24 -25 mpg on 95 octane fuel. I'm tempted to leave well alone...

    Replacement Alternators P6B 1971

Hi Ron and Dave The electrician easily rewired my alternator by disconnecting the Rover's voltage control and bypassing the warning light relay. That is the aluminium tube by the drivers right knee that I thought was the flasher unit relay. It took about five minutes. The alternator works well...
