De dion tube P6B

Not really a new topic but the gaiters on my De Dion tube have gone again, albeit after many miles.
Oil is dribbling out in unseemly amounts.
I saw someone sometime ago ask if it is practical to refill early oiled filled tubes with grease.( When being overhauled of course.)
I could not find a reply.
Any views please?

The grease type De dion tubes are not filled with grease, rather there is just a smear over the inner tube and around the seals.

I have never seen an oil type De dion tube dismantled, so I cannot say if using grease in place of oil is feasible.

I am sure that another forum member will have an answer.

Thanks Ron
I am not even sure that it would be an advantage but as I have to strip it all down any way it was just a thought.

Thankyou, this probably explains why the dust gaiter rotted away.
I don't find the workshop manual very helpful on this matter of seals at the right hand end.

I have an old tube from a parts car and cannot see how the seal should fit on the right hand end.
There is a small lip machined on the inside of the outer tube but surely when the inner tube is pushed in, it will disturb the seal.
( there is no seal present on this old part so I have nothing to go by )

The left hand side is all fairly obvious in the manual.

I have ordered up the parts and it may be clearer when I have the seals to hand.

Any advice on replacing these parts would be appreciated.

Thankyou.
I have identified the oil seal retainer and it all looks quite straightforward.

The last time this was done I don't think the seal was replaced. Hence the leak and the rotted gaiter.
