De dion tube P6B

Is it possible to extract the centre section of the tube without removing the whole unit from the car?

I only need to extract the inner (ie withdraw it to the right ) so that I can replace the dust gaiter.

I have recollections of a New Zealand member commenting on this some years ago.

Fortunately I don't have the need to remove De dion tubes very often, but from memory (which could be wrong), no, you'll need to remove the whole tube. It is not a difficult task, especially when compared to other things that you could be doing on the Rover.

Put an alignment mark at either end of the tube where it meets the elbows, makes refitting much quicker.

My memory is different but I could be wrong.
I thought you could remove the inner without taking the entire tube off. I certainly remember rotating one end to give access, but am not clear what I'd undone to make that possible.

IIRC there is a spring clip that stops the inner tube falling out. But i cannot remember its exact position.
However you can replace just the dust gaiter without removing the whole tube. Both rear wheels should be in the air, and you unbolt only the right hand side.

I was just about to say what Demetris just wrote. There is a spring clip, certainly on the grease type, that is located at the opposite end to the gaitor. In order to slide out the inner tube completely, the spring clip must be released. In order to do that, the tube needs to have both ends released from the elbows.

Yes I think Demetris is right.

It is not entirely laziness on my part but I prefer to disturb as little as possible on an elderly car.
I also find it a bit of a hassle in jacking the car up to an appropriate height and blocking it safely up there.
I am now awaiting parts from Scotts.

I also have a set of shock absorbers to change on my wife's Mazda MX5.
Life is never boring thank goodness.
