To set my credentials first I own a 1971 P6B and have owned two P5s in the past.
I live in Tasmania and a fellow in the village has a Rover 416 sli for sale.
This car is a private English import, has done some 140,000kms and appears to be in good order.
However there are no spare parts available in Aus. as far as I know.
A plus is the fact that the car is automatic and has a Honda engine, gearbox and electrics.
I am tempted with the car but know nothing about the model and accept the fact that the Rover badge is influencing me.
Does anyone have any views?

Its a Honda.
Dont let the badge sway you.
Its like sticking a Holden badge on a BMW and saying it really is a HOLDEN!
If you need a car for daily running around go for it,as you should be able to get honda parts easily.
Its those rare Rover use only bits that may cause problems.

It's half ar half Honda. They're reliable and although not as nice as the rover engined ones to drive they are decent.

They're a good semi modern buy in my experience.

wasn't the Honda lump the ones they put in the early ones like the 200 etc. where as the 25 etc had the k series. either way im surprised that parts are not easily available as others said as the k series engine was used in lots of different things from tvr to Caterham to range rovers etc etc

Thankyou for your replies.
I don't actually need another car anyway, it was just interest.
I'm going to have a cold shower and forget it.
thanks again

Assuming it is the 89-95 approx model, then is definitely Honda engine version. In case you are still wavering, my better half had one of these (actually a 1995 216Sli auto) when they were new.

I remember looking into at the time, the general view was that the Honda engine was much more reliable than the K series 1400. Heavier on fuel though; probably why most people went for the K series if they just looked at the on-paper figures.

We kept it until it had covered 95000 miles and had absolutely nothing go wrong with it. It simply required normal routine servicing, although I did change oil every 3-4000 miles, because that's what I've always done. Build quality was excellent, with no sign of any corrosion at all when we sold it.

Not quite a P6 or P5, but then it wasn't really in the same market. Actually, thinking about it, I might have had to replace a brake light bulb
