Wheels

I have seen lots of different wheels on a p6. But in my opinion the rostyle has never been beaten. It just goes so well with the car, it's like bacon and eggs, fish and chips , Eric and Ernie, beer and kebab.

I do see what you're saying. On a dark coloured car, Rostyles do look really good- but only the painted ones, not the chromed types. I think they probably looked a tad better on a P5B, but I think I might prefer Minilites on a P6. I know they don't have the same 'factory-esque' look as Rostyles but they're such a period feature. I'm currently saving up my pennies for a set at the mo, but may be tempted by a decent set of Rostyles should they come along at a fair price.

Whichever it is, they're both infinitely better than the Rostyle-esque V8S wheel trims, which I think look awful! If you're going to build and sell a car with steel wheels, have the decency to make the best of them (which I think the clean-looking standard S2 trims do) rather than just pretending they're more expensive wheels than they are!! (No offence to 'S' owners by the way!!)

There's no doubt 14! Rostyles are THE extra to have on your P6! Personally, I think they are a tad too bling and prefer them painted rather than chromed, but each to their own. I do think that 15" P5B Rostyles don't look right at all on a P6. The S trims look superb on an S2, wrong on an S1? My personal favourite would be plain steel wheels without hub caps to evoke the early rally cars, but I'm fairly flexible and have had to put up with SD1 cross spoke Vitesses wheels on mine so as to achieve the width and 15" diameter to allow me to fit decent tyres.

When you say painted and not chromed. Do you mean sections painted black with sections chromed, I have never seen them any other way !!

The BMC Land Crab 1800 / 2200 had these wheels as an option too. But theirs had slightly wider rims and the silver sections were painted rather than chromed. I think they look much nicer on a P6 than the pukka chrome ones.

I like the look of minilites, but only on Minis.

Rostyles are nice, but I am a big fan of the Vitesse Alloys. I think they set off a series 2 car very nicely indeed.

Only my opinion.

Richard

Richard they do look nice, BUT and for me it's a BIG but, keeping them clean in tip top condition must be a nightmare.

Chris, I was talking to a guy who refurbishes wheels and he said he could not do much with mine as they are chrome, but alot of the MG guys have the chrome stripped and then sprayed with a silver paint which really looks good, though not as shiny, he says that would look good on mine but having not seen any like that I'm not sure. Is that what you were thinking?

Yes and no. The BMC Land Crab variant of the 14" Rostyle comes oem as fully painted - silver and black - with no chrome. I think that looks much better.

Chris

Sorry to keep posting pictures of 'Hazel', but here she is again with (I think) lovely painted rostyles. No, I still haven't got round to chrome wheel nuts or centre caps!

Wow.... I take back my earlier statement. Chromed Rostyles are the business! I would have thought they'd be a bit 'bling' but in comparison the painted ones look nowhere near as good!

Hmmm.... This does make it tough decision. Might get out and see more cars in the flesh before making a decision!

I like, (in no particular order)

Minilites (preferably big ones 16" please)
Magstars
Jeep alloys
Cosmics
Ridiculously Huge Boyds wheels

I guess the Magstars would be the most "standard"

I would prefer the standard stainless hubcaps to Rostyles.

The problem with our Rostyles is to rechrome them they have to have the centre separated from the rim and it is finding someone who has the kit and know how, of how to do that part of the job. I can get them stripped and re-chromed at our local platers, but only after they are separated. If they dip the whole wheel to strip the old chrome off, the rivets are eroded as well and the wheels are then useless, plus they are very near impossible to chrome properly. There used to be a guy in Cradley Heath who did the full refurbs but he appears to have dissappeared, unless anyone out there has a NEW number for him.

Just remembered the company was RJ Spratley but as I said above, there is no active number and the website has gone.

FYI my favourite wheels are Magstars, closely followed by Minilites. Wires are nice but I am not a fan of the cleaning involved on them!
