Wheels

Minilites, RoStyles, S-trims all look good, in my opinion, the former especially on series 1s.

There used to be a (red,) 3500S near me which was fitted with slightly wide Minilites from new, and which had had the rear arches opened up at the top (ie more rounded) - certainly looked 'just right' to me as an impressionable teenager at the time. Other than that (and a very short private plate), it was standard. On reflection, quite unusual for a new car to have body modifications made to it, that invariably seems to happen a few owners down the line.

All down to personal taste, I guess.

Of course it's very easy on a P6 to have "modified" body panels, and standard panels, and swap them as needed, buy another set of wings to modify, then pop the originals back on when you want to sell the car, as long as you don't start cutting up the base unit you're pretty safe.

I think most wheels look good on P6s. On early cars, I'd say standard hubcaps, or wires. I reckon my car would really suit wires, but I can't justify the expense. Minilites really suit series 1s too, and on the right series 1 rostyles can look fantastic.
I think series 2 4 cylinder cars look best on standard trims, and V8s look best with rostyles. I'm afraid I really don't like 'S' wheeltrims much, or magstars.

Some SD1 models came out with steel rims and chrome "S" type wheel trims ,[did in NZ ]
A better looking trim c/f the P6s ones, in my opinion.
Ive always admired them.and even have a new SD1 set stored in my overburdened shed.
Tried fitting on my steel P6 rim but are too deep.
I havnt got around to aquiring some steel SD1 rims to do the swap. - Who would want SD1 steel rims when there are those wonderful alloys available from the vitesse or VDP.
The SD1 steel rim , must in turn fit the P6 if the vitesse do.
Anyone done the business with these trims on their P6 ?
Any way Im very proud of my Chrome Rostyles and wouldnt give them up without a fight.

I always thought that my grandfather should have bought a set of Rostyles or minilights for his car, I never liked the hubcaps.

Now that it's mine, I still don't like the hubcaps but I know that restoring a set of 15in Rostyles is going to be very expensive, so I'm almost tempted to get some aluminum Magnum 500s in a 15 or some Torque Thrust D's, also in a 15.

Ideally I'd love deep dish wheels, Borrani wire wheels in a deep Ferrari dish type would be nice!

Are these the ones you mean Gerald?

These were on a 2200TC I had a few years back. The main advantage of using SD1 steel rims is that they are 6" wide. They will fit the P6 just fine but, as with SD1 alloys, you need to use the SD1 wheel nuts and studs. The hubcaps are held on by the nuts and the thread is different to the P6. They do look good though.

Hi Al
Yes
those are them
Give real depth to the wheel
First time Ive seen them mounted on a P6
Look stunning on your P6. Makes it look like it goes fast
Tempted to by another P6 just to wear them -I didnt actually say that ,was only thinking out loud

Just as an aside Al
Do you have one car reg'd and plated and just do a number plate swap amongst all your 6 cars for what ever car you want to use.
I used to do that when I had to take one of my trucks to town. Works until zealous cops get nosey.
Continuous rego basically killed that

That's my problem. I need several cars just to hold all the wheels I have!

Not quite. The red TC has been fully legal since I got it and is driven daily. I was using the V8 through the summer but put the rego on hold at the end of April. I'm waiting for it to get cheap next year. The lhd is hopefully going to be legal very shortly. The estate is in a million bits and de-registered. The 3500S is on hold and locked away in a storage unit.
It does make it easier when they all are 40 years old 'cos you can register 3 for the price of 1. (almost)

I used to a long time ago, as I had a '67 2000SC and a '75 3500S in Christchurch. Mid-90's to early 2001, before the cops really checked on things. Never had any problems, but I certainly wouldn't do it now unless you had two virtually identical cars.

Hello,
I've been away from the forum for a while but a new P6 3500s means I'm back.
On the subject of Rostyles, I have seen a set from a 1974 2000tc for sale.
Can anyone tell me please, if these fit the 3500s?
I had a problem on my last P6 where someone had fitted a non V8 hub on one side with a non V8 steel wheel.
When I changed the hub, I only realised the wheel was wrong as well when it interfered with the caliper.
What a bodge!
Philippe

Yes hubs are different to accomodate the wider wheels on the V8's, and that applies to the Rostyles as well. 4 cyl Rostyles wheels will fit the V8 hubs without problems, (but not vice-versa) but the rims are ½" narrower.

Good to see you back here again.

I have seen lots of different wheels on a p6. But in my opinion the rostyle has never been beaten. It just goes so well with the car, it's like bacon and eggs, fish and chips , Eric and Ernie, beer and kebab.

I do see what you're saying. On a dark coloured car, Rostyles do look really good- but only the painted ones, not the chromed types. I think they probably looked a tad better on a P5B, but I think I might prefer Minilites on a P6. I know they don't have the same 'factory-esque' look as Rostyles but they're such a period feature. I'm currently saving up my pennies for a set at the mo, but may be tempted by a decent set of Rostyles should they come along at a fair price.

Whichever it is, they're both infinitely better than the Rostyle-esque V8S wheel trims, which I think look awful! If you're going to build and sell a car with steel wheels, have the decency to make the best of them (which I think the clean-looking standard S2 trims do) rather than just pretending they're more expensive wheels than they are!! (No offence to 'S' owners by the way!!)

So you do like the "S" trims then ? or not ?
PPs How sad am i ,remembering you didn't like "S" trims
Mr Red rover , Banged to rights i'd say :D

The old mans gone camping with his son and left me for the weekend . I'm drinking wine and looking for trouble ! Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned ! Gotta defend my "S" trims . Worry not , I'll pass out in a bit

This is my Paprika/Huntsman 2200 auto ('The Nemesis') which I had from 2004-2006. The car's entire ouvre was changed by fitting a set of 'S' trims. They suit a loud colour, but not something dour (I'd never have put them on my Lunar Grey 2200 auto which followed)

RoStyles are the business though, in the end I'd like a set on Ol' Rumbly.

The other great car/wheel combination is wires on a Series 1 2000TC. Lovely.

HA HA! I've been totally called haven't i!! :D

Do you know, I have come round to the 'S' trims a lot, and that is partly down to this thread which got me thinking about them! As Nick says, they can really transform the whole impression given off by the car. At the time, I had pretty much written them off as 'pretend rostyles', which I thought was a waste since Rover were manufacturing these clever clip-on aluminium things, and the scope for a new and unique design would have been endless (like the Denovo trims). Seeing a few 'S' cars in the flesh has completely transformed this opinion though, and I am now attempting to polish my new set to a mirror finish. (My thanks to Dave PIlkie for selling them to me at Rugeley!)

I must admit, reading my old post back does sound a little high-horsey, and I apologise for that!) It reads with so much more vigour and disdainfulness than was in my mind when writing it. I guess the written word doesn't preserve the mood of the moment, only the sentiment..... :(

Best,
Michael
