Sd1 wheel trms

When I was a nipper the hot thing was to buy a hex head bolt kit for your Japanese bike engine sose you could replace all them darn cross head screws.
Of course getting them undone was the challenge, that involved buying an impact wrench that cost a fortune.
So you bought the expensive bolt kit in S/S, then the impact wrench, then a set of expensive allen keys, struggled to get all the cross head screws undone, fitted the hex head screws................ then you never had to undo them ever again as the damn bike never went wrong !

Main problem I had with the Kwakker was their cross head engine screws are a special design that our crosshead (or philips pozidrive whatever) do not fit properly. Their screws are apparently Japanese Imperial something or other, which is why we tend to destroy the screw heads so easily. Apart from the fact that they are made out of chocolate that is.
They are called JIS screws, and are slightly different to Philips. If you lop the tip off a Philips, you will be fine.

I like what you did there, Japanese imperial something lol. you got it in one, Japanese imperial screws.

I well remember the day when you replaced them all with Allen head bolts ( Screws). Though of course if you had the appropriate JIS drivers you were probably OK.

In later years I got to work on a lot of Japanese equipment (not Cars or Bikes) mostly electronic and having the appropriate JIS drivers was an absolute must. Due to the aforementioned industry standards I find that now I posses the most complete set of cross head drivers be they supra Philips or JIS and have become a Demon when it comes to instructing others in their use.

PS buy a Grabber.

I bought a special screwdriver with a large "T" handle from a motorcycle workshop to do those and I don't remember chewing any of the heads up. I still have it somewhere.

I just remembered the problem from my youth, but then I didn't do much work on Japanese stuff, just the odd job. I did learn it was best to tap them with an impact driver to get them started.

So, when I rebuilt the bike engine I used allen bolts, every one of them changed to an allen bolt.

It was only after I had finished that I learned of the JIS screws, which would have left the bike more original, were the cause of my early problems :(

Never mind though, they look very nice to me and I'm not that bothered with originality much anyway, given the rear disc brake, built in rack, alloy rims, stainless spokes, electronic ignition, etc etc etc :)

I have noticed that we are discussing Japanese screws in a thread called 'Sd1 wheel trms' o_O

Let's hope RD doesn't turn up and tell us off :)

I'd forgotten about needing an impact driver! bugger originality most of our bikes had Allen bolts, no more impact driver :D

As harveyp6 says is it worth the trouble ? Well cleaned them up today and a splash of paint , don't think they look to bad now .
Getting some more paint tomorrow so I will paint the wheels before I put trims back on .
