Rear ended

sorry to see another rover hit, im starting to wonder is it because there isnt a high level brake light in rear window, hope you get sorted
marcus

oh dear, your car looked very nice at petworth it certainly didnt deserve that i hope its an easy fix

Hi all , an update . Got everything straight , their is a fair amount of adjustment available on the elongated holes in the bumper and the irons . The boot floor and panel work was all o.k . had to touch up a bit on the rear valence , just touched it in in a couple of places then sanded back and polished . Thanks to my mate Jules for a few bits and pieces and a bumper to chrome , And to Pilkie for tracking down an old contact who in the end exchanged it for a re chromed one ( just waiting for that to turn up then it's job done . )
I am thinking about a high intensity brake light as mentioned above ( Don't want this to become a regular thing ! ) Didn't Chris York do something similar ? Seem to remember a thread about it , i don't just want to bolt on a horrible halfords job , something tasteful :?

Ps not liking the stock car look :)

Looking good so far Stina, hope the bumper arrives soon!
Chris IIRC fitted a Jag XK8 convertible high viz brake light to his bootlid,am thinking of going that route myself, but they aint cheap new,and hard to find s/h!!
Meanwhile I have fitted a std stick it in the top of rear window LED type made by Ring I think, cost me £1.50 haggled down from £3
Does the job and very discreet,as you only know its there when its on!!
Will try and do a pic tomorrow.

Thanks Chris , that was the thread i remembered , looks rather nice . A project for a rainy day then :D

Not only does it look as though it was designed to be there on the open lid, but it just sneaks neatly under the back end of the boot mounted spare.

Chris

Chris can you clarify that ? with the boot mounted spare fitted you can see the brake light?

Graeme

That's right, Graeme. With the boot mount speare on - complete with cover - you can still see the brake light. The lens is pretty well flush with the back of the wheel.

Chris

Your back end is looking good again stina

I think you may have enquired after the same rear bumper as I did. When I asked the seller he said he'd had another enquiry and asked if we'd reversed into each other

My tuppence ha'penny's worth on the high level brake light....I wouldn't bother as I don't think it will make any difference to the probability of getting hit from behind again. If it gives you some sense of having made a difference though then you go for it.

Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but I really think it can make the difference.
I fitted mine after I got sick of the Formby 4x4's sitting on my back bumper. They're so high, and the boot of the P6 is so low by comparison, that I can't be completely sure they'd be able to see my brake lights without making a concerted effort to lean forwards and look down over the bonnet.
I've also followed a few friends in classics before. Aside from the fact that you can't really see the taillights any further than 30 yards away, you also can't tell when the brake lights are on. If they have their sidelights on, you have to be looking at the back of the car to see the change from dim to bright. If you're looking away at the time, you can't always tell whether they're slowing or not. No problem if it's me following them at a 10 yard gap, but when it's a tinted Range Rover at a +25 thou gap from the back bumper, I'd rather it was as clear as possible for them. The little LED strip in the back window is an unequivocal "I'M STOPPING NOW".

Hi Dave thanks , she's looking o'k , or will when the bumper arrives . Hope things are moving along o'k with yours ? I lost track of the people i contacted , and dealt with .
On the brake light issue , i guess it'll make me feel as if i've tried , As Micheal says though , it just might catch the attention of someone before it's too late :?

If they are that close behind you, you could have a lighthouse on your boot , they ain't gonna stop if you brake. I do like the look of Chris's light on the boot though.

Hi, The old boy must of been thinking I used to have one of those and completely forgot to brake,A traumatic experience for both, Hope all involved are OK, Cars can be mended. Regards Ray

I like Chris's hi-level brake light. It looks like a factory fitting and I think it is completely in character.

Reading the comments, I suspect a 3rd higher level brake light must make a difference and reduces the risk of being rear-ended. I reckon that because the 3rd light is higher, it is more noticeable to drivers of moderns (which do tend to sit higher and, as mentioned, are often SUVs). Also, the fact that the 3rd light is separated from the normal rear light clusters surely makes it more noticeable? Very important, you can see high level brake lights through the windows of car in front and get advanced warning of car further ahead starting to brake?

My latest pet hate about modern cars is that their headlights are way too bright. So bright that, if a car is driving towards me with it's indicators on, I often cannnot see the indicators flashing because the headlights are completely dazzling me. In fact, I worry that modern car headlights are way too bright - the efficiency of the lamps and reflecters has significantly improved but I don't think the limits on power ratings have? I reckon some new cars full or dipped headlights are so bright that they are just about "drowning out" the relatively paltry light emitted from a P6's rear lights??

I like Pilkie's idea of a brake light that you can programme with you own messages :D . My personal favourite would have to be, albeit a little cliched, "If you can read this your too !£$%&*+ close". :D

Final update . All back together and straight , had to cut and welded the tow bar straight again to get the bumper to sit right at the ends as it was more bent than i had thought . Their was a bit of guess work not having anything to compare it with , and allot of trial fitting but she looks good again , and her dignity is restored with a neat and tidy rear end .
