Rear ended

DONT!! Let them fix or order anything!!
And dont leave the car with them,be there when they assess it and take it away!!
All it is there for is a quote, not to be fixed!
But it would be interesting seeing them try to order a new rear bumper though!!
Get the best settlement you can from them and fix it yourself, you are more than capable of a little job like that!
Dont allow them to put a cat c or d marker on it either!
When my Dolly Sprint had its nose bashed in,I got 3 quotes, highest £1000 was from an insurance screwing so called specialist in all repairs, middle £500 and low £300 were from a Triumph specialist giving new parts quote and s/h parts quote.
We agreed on the new parts quote, they paid out without going via the insurance company and then I fixed it myself for not a lot with filler and a few spraycans!!

Hi all .
The other guys insurance has admitted full liability , they offered to have their assessor look at it and sort the damage . My company advised that i accept their offer of a courtesy car but see my companys assessor as if i use the other guys i would then have no come back with my people . So i took it to my companys assessor this afternoon . Apart from loving the old girl they were not much help , wouldn't know where to get parts , don't deal in 2nd hand parts etc , all the things we knew any way . He said he would recommend to my insurers that they offer me a cash settlement to do the job myself .
I,m o.k with that , but i want enough to cover the parts , re chrome a 2nd hand bumper , and what ever labor price a repairer would charge .
What do you all think , and how much do we think is a reasonable settlement to cover it ?
I'm not looking to make a fortune out of it , just put her back the way she deserves to be .
In the mean time i have been given the use of Noddys car to get around in , Don't know what it is , horrible little blue thing :?

Hi Stina.
Well thats a good result overall!
If its just a simple unbolt/bolt on job.
If you start with getting a good bumper and to have it triple rechromed £400,nos rear overriders have been advertised at £100,new bumper mount irons, bolts etc
If any panels need repainting then its £100-£150 per panel thats without removal and refit doing on car.
A weekend or 2 of your own time!or 2 days garage labour rate.
Without seeing it for myself and knowing exactly the extent of damage.just going by what I can see,I would settle on £1000 to put it right!

If it was me, I would kind of combine Chris York & Pilkie's advice - get a quote/s from a trusted P6 specialist/s (preferably at least two) and use this to make the claim. If you can get the insurer to make payment to you, you then have the option of getting a specialist to do the work or you should have enough cash to buy the bits and do it yourself? If you do the work yourself, you also have the assurance of at least two professionals in terms of the work that needs done?

Hopefully, the damage is minimal as it appears in the pic's but until you get the boot open and have good look, you won't know for sure?

This thread got me wondering if the popular classic insurers that many of us have policies with have a list of approved classic repairers?

Would it be better to have the existing bumper straightened if poss rather than another rechromed ? Old chrome is normally better than new
Don't forget to insist that if you accept dash , your car doesn't go on the total-loss register .It's a hell of a job to get it taken off

Doubt very much it will be a total loss according to the ins company!
They may try to put a cat d on it,but refuse that!!!
You want no record of any accident, apart from a letter of AGREED settlement for minor damage caused!

I took a cash settlement for Bruiser & it hasn't affected the insurance at all. The car is still listed on the policy & my premium even went down a little.

Good advice from JVY, get a quote from a P6 specialist, that's gives you a bit of bargaining power. My van was written off and I bought it back without any problems, had it repaired and just had to get another MOT before I could use it.

Hi all .
Todays developments , not much other than the company that assessed the damage yesterday rang to say they have sent some pics to the insurance company , and recommended a cash settlement which the insurance have agreed to ( although i haven't heard from them yet ) or have any idea what they will offer . I have priced it up , taking into account all the advice on here and have an idea of what i'm prepared to accept .
I'm also aware of keeping it off any total loss registers or getting it tagged in any way now so thanks for the advice and warnings . I'll keep you all informed of progress .
On a different note i know why i love old cars , the noddy hire car is awful

Sorry to read of your misfortune, Stina. Is the rear bumper itself bent, or are the bumper irons bent? What exactly is damaged?
Hope you can get it sorted easily, and efficiently!

Hi Frazer .
Bumper is actually kinked , irons and tow bar bent , But the panels and paint all o'k . boot floor and chassis look o.k . I'll know more when i remove the bumper and can open the boot ( over riders too close to panel at the moment ) but i don't want to touch it until the insurance is settled .
Hay hoo :?

sorry to hear about your accident.my dad had minor mishap,no other cars involved, but it forced him to stop driving, sad fact of life, old age

Ouch!!

Hope you are OK. I was involved in a similar accident some time back, not nice.

I'm sure you will have the car back to its best, its a corker of a P6.

My only advice when dealing with insurance companies is just don't be rushed and don't be bullied. They will want the quickest and cheapest resolution. Make sure you have everything checked out thoroughly before accepting any settlement, and that includes you too. Such rear end shunts may cause physical problems that arn't always immediately evident.

Indeed , so when/if you accept their cash offer make it quite clear on the acceptance form that it is without prejudice to any claim for personal injury you may later wish to bring

email pics to your nearest 'friendly familiar with P6s repairer' with a list of what is damaged and get their estimate.

Job's a goodun

Sorry to see it damaged but glad it's a light one :)

Hi stina

Well I can now completely sympathise with you...

Check my newest post in Lady Charlotte's thread and weep.

Shall we compare war stories over a beer sometime?

Dave

Dave , posted on your thread . What a gutter .

I don't want to say too much about mine other than an agreeable settlement on the right side of a grand . No total loss cat c or d and no premium hike next renewal .

Total it all up Dave , be prepared to be shocked at their laughable first offer and argue till you are happy :!:

Ps i hope they give you a better hire car than the noddy car i have . I've been parking it outside next doors and only using it in the dark

Tis that Mick , special order , Almond
Been using it to good effect though , taking allotment rubbish to the tip , it stinks in there , gonna blame it on the dog when i give it back
