Rear ended

Well Guys , guess these things happen eh ! Sat at the lights at the end of a slip road ( A338 blackwater junction if anyone knows it ) on my own in the left hand filter lane , stationary . Looked in the mirror , don't know why , sixth sense maybe , just as this old boy slammed into the back of me . He was best part of 80 , going to see his wife on the terminal ward .Sad but should someone be driving in that circumstance !
The tow bar looks to of taken the brunt of it , no paint or panel damage , can't open the boot though as the over rider's in the way . Gotta take it to the garage the insurer recommended tomorrow , don't know what it's likely to of done to the chassis where the irons mount , boot floor looks straight , think it's bent the bolts through the jacking block rather than moved anything .
The irony was i was on the way to the same hospital for a scan on my shoulder / neck that has been troubling me for years , Don't think i've done it any favors today !

Bad luck! Looks as though you may get away with a bumper. Towbars can be a mixed blessing in rear-enders depending on speed of impact but personally, I prefer to have them fitted.

Mmmmm that's why I like our bumpers! A modern would have no back end left. At least he didn't say you reversed into him.

BUMM#R!!!
I have to agree about the probable state of the old boy who hit you!
If there is no damage, scratches to any panels, and gaps still look good, you maybe lucky and find its just the bumper mount irons and towbar jack bolt support that are bent!
Bumper still looks quite straight though, hopwefully just a tension twist that may spring out when undone!
If it were mine I would take a look myself first, and if it had to go to a garage would take it to one of my choosing!
Its likely they will not know the price of refurbing back bumpers and that new are not available!

Hi Stina,
i was a little horrified to read the title of this topic, but thankfully i can see that you got away with almost the least possible damage.
Being lucky in your unluckyness as we say over here.
Your mention of looking into your rear view mirror reminded me of a similar story of mine, while stopped at a red light in my Austin, the light drizzle that had just started to fall made the road very slippery, i suddenly felt i should look into my rear view mirror. It was well worth because i saw a Kia Sportage on a locked 4 wheel skid (no ABS those days...) approaching threateningly. I didn't had time to think anything, but the next thing that i remember was engaging 1st and leaping a few metres forward into a thankfully empty junction. The heavy 4x4 finally stopped into the place i have been standing before! As i realised that i had a very lucky escape, i got out in a steaming mood to tell off (and a bit more... ) the driver of the Kia, but seeing a horrified girl behind the steering wheel i just made some remarks about driving in slippery conditions in authentic austere headmaster style, and returned to my car, still not believing how lucky i must have been.
Anyway, I am sure you'll have it sorted in no time! :D

Oh bad luck! But it does look like a narrow escape from far worse damage. Probably not possible to assess the damage properly until the bumper and towbar have been removed, I wouldn't be surprised if the holes through the boot floor have been elongated as the bolts were pushed forwards.

A similarly ancient fellow drove into the door of my P6 a couple of years ago making me wonder if he really should have been driving at all. The Rover needed a door and wing but his Fiat looked like a write off.

 Rotten luck Stina. Just glad no one was hurt (assuming your shoulder problem hasn't been made any worse). I really hope it's an easy fix.

I also feared the worse on reading the header....thankfully you and the old boy seem to be ok.
I agree with Dave I would take the car to my own garage stuff the insurers garentee, I'd rather it was repaired by some one in the know....Hope you have an agreed value and they don't try to write it off.. Best wishes

Could've been worse !! I was hit in a similar way by Pontiac of 70's vintage with a great pointy nose. This protruded well into my boot !!

As said above, towbars can be a mixed blessing because they can transfer the forces onto structural members rather than crumple zones.

So, so sorry to hear your news, Stina. Just gratefull to hear you're OK. No matter what the damage, the Rover will pull through in the end. People can be more fragile. Still, I do hope you have less aggro than some members with insurance... Why not persuade the nominated repairer that they need expert help and refer them to a P6 bodywork specialist for a second opinion? I think Nick is the closest to you, then Colin Gould and Mark Gray in that order of distance.

This as well!

Looks like the bumper's done it's job though, after all, that's what it's for.

Hope you get it sorted without too much hassle, I have a lot of sympathy for the old bloke, sounds like my grandpa a bit ago when my gran died, he had to take her car in to sell it to the dealer and forgot to put the handbrake on, and it rolled across the forecourt and hit a CRV, thankfully on the rear tyre carrier thing so no damage to anything. A stressful time.

But he should have got a taxi if he was that out of it to drive. As said, glad you're OK and it's not borked the back end too much at first glance :)

Hi guys thanks for comments . I think the tow bar did save the day , think it would of made a mess without it . It's agreed value of 5k so i'm guessing they won't write it off for that . I'll take it where they said , if i'm not happy i'll search out one of the specialists . The girl from the repairer said they would have a look today and order new parts , does she know something we don't  She was mighty proud that they specialise in porsche and bmw , might as well specialise in reliant robbins for all the good that is
Things should become clearer today :?

Trouble with them places they charge BMW or Porsche prices. My transit was sent to a place like that who wrote it off. As the van was worth £2000 their repair must have been close to that or more. I had the van repaired for just over £150 inc a new MOT. Good luck with yours and hope its sorted smoothly and quickly.

Sorry to hear about your little shunt stina. I reckon the old guy must've been dazzled by the shine from the back of your car :D Car doesn't look too bad so hopefully a quick fix and back on the road again. I always fear the worst when I see a thread with that sort of heading. Did you get a picture of the front of the other guy's car? Mobile phones are great for getting good pictures for the insurance company.

Dave

Hope you didn't get another crick from it, Stina. Sorry to see this, hope it comes right, straight and true with minimal hassle...

Really sorry to see this!

Looks like you might have got away with it - hopefully there won't be any nasties lurking when you start digging!

Hi Stina, Sorry to hear about your accident. :( Hopefully it'll be a quick painless fix insurance wise. I dread this sort of thing happening every time I go out in my P6, and mine's not as nice as yours. Glad you weren't injured. Hope your insurance doesn't muck you about, although it should be paid for by his insurance, I'd have thought. I also hope you don't get bothered by ambulance chasers.. Injury claim lawyers. They're the pits..

As an ex-insurance man I wouldn't let a recommended repairer anywhere near my car .There only interest is in saving money on the job as insurers have screwed the rates down so far. Nor would I let a third party insurer take over repairs
Damage doesn't look that bad and you want to keep it off the total loss register. First thing I think I'd do is to get an estimate from someone known to the forum
Of course there's the potential for a whiplash claim .You can argue your pre-existing injury has been made worse by this impact. You'll probably get phone calls from various accident management companies offering you hire cars , their repair facilities(say NO) and access to solicitors to make a claim for injuries
