Re: P6 project: BW35 to LT77 manual box swap: the verdict

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted, almost finished painting

Red is on! forgot how smelly it gets with no extractor in my garage! case of opening the doors to let the spray dust waft out, have two heaters going in an on/off style to keep the celly happy and to stop it getting to warm so it doesnt dry before landing on the car! luckly I'm still getting a good shine. O/S Doors next.

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted, almost finished painting

Just be carefull if you're using those gas heaters, naked flame + paint mist = BANG !
And I hope you've got some sort of mask on, amazing how much more concentrated the fumes get indoors.

Looking good though ! :D

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted, almost finished painting

Hi Rich,

I wear two masks, a small paper one and a proper dual filter mask over it, ideally a extractor fan is the way forward but after this car I'll wont be spraying for a long time, also keep my neighbours happy who so far are very understanding & enthusiastic! luckly :)
Yes I only thought about the possible explosion risk after I'd fininshed spraying....didnt even click, not good, I warm up the garage beofre I start spraying then switch it off whilst spraying then open the doors to let most of the mist out, switch it back on once clear to dry the paint, still risky I guess.

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted, almost finished painting

looks well :) aint those hinges suppose to be un-painted? Or is that part of the custom look? :)

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted, almost finished painting

Ha ha well spotted! well I didnt want to disturb there settings, the actual locating pins are masked, you see it before I started spraying the primar.

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted, almost finished painting

Quick pic of the car outside, have started to strip the O/S doors down ready for prep n paint!

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted, almost finished painting

Having well painted door shuts really sets a car off well

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted, almost finished painting

Hi Dave, yeah certianly makes a big difference when doing a complete colour change, brings out the details like new door draught exlcuder, rubbers & polished stainless sill treads.
Started prepping O/S rear door tonight, no rust buts lots layers on there, a few dings to smooth out, hey ho, a few coats of filler primer & flatten down should see it smooth.

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted, almost finished painting

I don't know whether to use the word, 'Striking' or 'Stunning' but it's certainly one of them, or both !

I can't wait to see it finished, are you going to get to any shows this year ?

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted, almost finished painting

I hope you'll be smothering it in Waxoyl when you finish?

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted, almost finished painting

Hi Guys,

Rich, Thanks for your kind words, yes will be attending some shows this year, some hot rod / american car shows, hopefully do fairly local car shows to me here in somerset, sherbourne classics, thornfalcon classic car show. hopefully the car will be all red !

Marcus, again thanks for your nice comments, I'm self taught at spraying, only use cellulose as I do everything in my single garage at the back of my house.
I've been tinkering with cars for about 24 yrs as hobby, my dad is ex royal navy enginner so I learnt with him such as changing brake pads etc when he used to service his 70's XJ6 Jaguar.
Welding & body work is self taught, I used to practise on Dads old Jag, being a series II leyland quality it was rusty after leaving the factory!
Anyway several 60's VW beetles, american cars, BMW,s & several Rovers I am quite confident in 'home restoration' so yes I'm chuffed to bits with the finish so far, you can see small blemishes & bits that arent quite as you'd get from a say £5k paint job but given my make shift spray shop then it looks £5k if that makes sense, its an awful lot of hard work & prepping, more so after spraying with flattening & then the polishing, with a proper spray shop then my labour & finshing would be more than half the time spent on it but hey its the end result that counts!
Will defo be waxoyling :D

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted, almost finished painting

well it looks a good job in the pictures mate :)

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted, almost finished painting

Looking excellent. Don't put your spraying skills down, your doing a great job as far as I can see. Is that Monza Red your doing it?

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted, almost finished painting

Hi all,

Yep the paint is Monza Red, I get it from a local supplier near to me., not cheap at £34 +VAT per litre  still cheaper than 2-pack I guess, never used it though, way too risky in a my garage without proper ventilation.
I like usuing the cellulose as it would have been the orginal stype of paint used in the factory, plus its easy to work with, the car will always garaged & not left in hot sunshine for long periods so no fadeing to pink!

Re: P6 V8 project: Alloy wheels fitted, almost finished painting

Quick update, been busy spraying primar and top coats of red! Im getting there slowly, just the other side to do now !
