Perhaps A Strange Question - Police 3500 'S'

Hello again. I have perhaps a strange question to ask.

I noticed on a few pictures of the P6 Police cars that they had a front skirt which tied in with the dropped grille in the front valence. I was reading an old copy of Practical classics today, and they said it was to keep the front of the P6 on the road at speeds of 90mph. Apparently, the weight of all the Police gear in the boot made the front very light at high speed, and they found that fitting this skirt helped quite alot.
They also said that the later 'normal' (as in non Police) 3500S's had this. Is this correct? Also, is there anyone who makes them?

I really quite like it as I think it finishes the front of the V8 cars off & would love to do it to mine.

Thank you all in advance
Jim :D

By the way, here's a pic

Not a strange question at all! The so-called 'Police' spoilers are uncommon. I was told they were once available from the west country owners club, don't know who though. Have also heard that reproductions are available from Alan at Classeparts, don't know if that is true or not. Mine (and no, you can't have them!) are 'original' meaning they were fitted by the previous owner when he resprayed the '73 car in '93, and are of fibreglass wrapped around a wooden core! Yes, my car has real wood in it, although not the door cappings, which are just wood-effect! Don't know if the spoliers actually help at high speeds but they certainly look good. I reckon a V8 P6 looks a bit 'chinless' without them!

In 1979/80 I worked for a non-franchised P6 specialist who bought hundreds (literally) of Met. Police P6B's when they came out of service, (or were smashed up more usually) and auctioned off, and I never remember seeing any on those cars, and no holes in the valance if they had been fitted and removed. Maybe they were only on the motorway cars.

Thanks for the replies fella's :D

Mrtask... That is exactly what I was thinking of doing... shape up some Marine Ply and cover it with fibreglass, then a nice layer of gel-coat. I will see if I can buy some first though.

The chap who makes them charges quite a bit, can't remember the figures but do remember thinking bl...y h..l I'm not paying that much, he was at Crich Tram museum last year.

considering they are only 15 - 18 inches long and about 5 -6 wide and made out of fibre glass they should be quite cheap to make, yet I have seen them go on ebay for more than £120

If anyone is going to make some I'd be interested.

Blimey, no, I wont be paying that much either, but I will be making some. I may do them out of metal with rolled edges, or I may do them in fibreglass... hhhmmmmm time to get my shed sorted out I think, then bury myself in there for the next few months

Is £160 cheap, plus postage. I admit they are rare, but does seem a tad expensive. I envisage having my car up at over 100mph regularly, so would consider them strongly if they actually work! Can anyone confirm they are functional, or just an interesting novelty for bored P6 owners.

Ive seen them for £80 recently,so that is a tad pricey!
As you envisage doing over a ton regularly!!I gather you will be on a private road!!!
I know I would NEVER,, go over 70 on a public road
Good springs and shocks WILL keep it very stable at HIGH speed!!

It will be on my garden path .... a rapid 5 mile stretch to work with no cameras. I have uprated springs and shocks, so thanks for advice. Also my car is lowered by 1 1/2" so again, wonder about spoilers. Although a few months from completion (hence could paint and hang new spoilers easily) I envisage a max speed of 140mph with a 200 bhp twin plenum injected lump up front ... so a ton will be an easy thing to do. Rest assured I am never ever going to see if I can make the 140, 100, 110 in 5th gear will be enough for me with 37 year old steering etc.

Please don tell the SD1 crowd I intend to thrash a twin plenum engine, they wanted to crucify me when i ripped it out of the SD1 Vitesse. They even launched an appeal on the McDritwich site to save the car to calls of "there was only 500 made" and "ruin an SD1 and a P6 at the same time"... sad but true!!

I know of a twisted traffic cop who reads a lot of forums! Wouldnt be surprised if he puts the word out!! Is it worth risking the loss of your license and loss of classic car insurance rates if you get done for quick thrill??
Best not to make such open admissions in a public domain!!

Edited it ... why r u old bill? If the Police have nothing better to do than sit on internet forums looking for people who speed occasionally then that is why the country is in the state it is. I get up and go to work every day. I spend money on cars and look after my family. I am an easy nick ..... if any Police are reading this, what about knife crime in London, burglary, the fact that there are so many illegals in this county that people do not recognize the streets they were born and grew up in.

Speeding is trivial if you think of the wider picture ... especially in a P6!!

no am not a cop, but I know a mate who got caught, and the cop said they have people who monitor lots of car forums, classic, boy racer and custom, and report things that could be happening however trivial it may seem, they then decide if its worth following up!!
And as the patrols are always out there,a P6 is a car they will spot easy,as they used to be cop cars!
its never wise to admit to doing or intending to do something illegal on a forum!!
When I and some others got into a chat about a certain dodgy subject,on another forum, the webmaster closed the thread down,as they couldnt be seen to support something that was potentially illegal!!
PS I would love to see the size of your house at the end of your garden path/drive!

I have found that the Police are if anything weak when it comes to car related "crimes". It would seem that the latest vogue is to have the biggest and noisiest back box fitted to your Eurobox to make your 1.2 Nova sound like a methanol dragster.... yet never heard of anyone getting nicked. Also I have seen a silly amount of late cars that are 30 years too late to have black and silver pressed ally plates, yet they do and people who think they have a classic car because it is 25 years old, doing the same. In addition to that I have lost count this month, the amount of people I have sat behind chirping away on bloody mobiles.

Most nicking is done by camera, as it is easy and unconfrontational and above all it generates revenue .... like carrying my dog that could not walk into the vets and getting a £60 parking fine by camera. When appealed, stated carrying a 30 kilo Bulldog that has lost use of legs 1/4 mile was impossible, the response was "pay up"! Also getting pulled for driving a grey van that was white by VOSA, was met with contempt when I told them I had painted the van and sent off papers and it was the DVLAs problem for not updating records .... when I told them they would be better served pulling up the huge swathes of vehicles with CZ, RO, PL, LT etc plates that have flooded in from Eastern Europe with no tax in windows, hence no UK MOT and probably no insurance, I was treated like something on the bottom of their shoes! As I said, they want easy nicks and what is frustrating is that I am said easy nick ...... the backbone of the country is treated with the greatest disrespect. Women complain about the glass ceiling, ethnic minorities complain about discrimination ... the most discriminated against individual in the country is the white, working class, heterosexual male and if you are middle aged (which I am not), you have no chance :?

""As I said, they want easy nicks and what is frustrating is that I am said easy nick ""

The easy solution to your dilema is not to give them the reason to pull you!
And having a go at them will only antagonise them!! Certain "crimes" are only dealt with by warnings,if you repeat then you eventually get done.
I am not going to get into a debate about the job they do,suffice to say they are on a hiding to nothing trying to catch all the offenders,be it petty or major crimes,as there are not enough to do the job efficiently!! Maybe the attitude of the public ought to change.NO CHANCE!!! We all know when we are doing something wrong, even when it seems trivial,or the only way!! so why moan when we get caught!
From spitting or flicking your fag end on the pavement, to going a little too fast,or parking a bit dodgy,we all take that chance everyday!!

Interesting thread. I'm a Brit who lives in New Jersey now. I've been out of the UK for 11 years and seen it change beyond recognition. Speed cameras were only just starting when I left. I had been pulled for speeding a couple of times before I left, but the police would listen at least to what you had to say, if you were calm about it. I think they knew that if you were going over the posted limit and it was 3am in the morning you weren't risking anyone else. They just gave me a warning and said nice motor! The camera doesn't take circumstances into account. (Like your vet related parking ticket).

Personally I find them wrong because it treats all citizens as criminals. If you treat people as though they will do something wrong by default, they think that's what expected of them.

And yes I have been done for speeding here too. But it was a cop, and yes they do have guns (gulp). Not crazy about that too. And no they don't let you off with a warning (not much better than a camera there then...).

If you want to see what your P6 can do , why not take it to a track day .OR , do you they still have RWYB;'s at North Weald Airfield ?

It's sad the way this country is heading and policed .We are all target driven .

Run What You Brung is still at North Weald. I am not really into track days .... as I said I don't want to know what the car will do flat out top end, but I know it will sit up at 100mph no probs. with a 200 brake TP, so was looking at ways to make car more stable as steering, suspension is all by todays standards very antiquated. Was also annoyed to think that forums are policed quite literally when there is so much much more wrong going on around us. Still fancy a set of them front spoilers though, to get back on topic  .

I was prosecuted for speeding when I wasn't speeding!!

I was so angry that they accused me wrongly, and then told lies in court just to back up their story, that I spent 3 years complaining to the Police, HMIC, CPS, IPCC, the Home Office, and Gordon Brown Nose, only to find that no one in authority really cares.

The evidence I have is very damning yet they do not bring charges of perjury or perverting the course of justice against the perpetrators, because they work for the Police.

I even put the whole story on a web site, which mysteriously disappeared

Here is a part rebuild of the site - I doubt if I will ever be able to rebuild the whole thing though.
