Which of these would be called the lower balljoint for mot purposes?

Are you replacing that one now ? You could maybe get a stilson wrench and try to rotate the joint or lock a couple of nuts and try that way.

Providing the tester knows which is which, it will be the one on the left in your pic. Check for yourself though as when the link strut ball joint fails a lot of people assume the play is in the bottom joint.

Yes replacing that steering rod as that's the only joint that's failed. The others are all replacing the boots as thats now a fail, but obviously you have to get it all apart to do that.

When you suggest 2 nuts and a stilson are you thinking to lock the nut up so i can try and screw it out?

If you can get access, the 2 hammers trick is also good. Get a nice heavy club hammer and hold it on one side of the
receptacle of the joint "pin" and belt it HARD on the other side. This narmally frees it off sharpish.... or in my case
normally stuffs the boot/and/or joint 'cos I can't hit straight to save my life......

Meaning to lock two nuts together then use them to turn the joint to break the seal of the taper . Also try holding a heavy lump ( old sledge hammer head etc ) against the eye of the arm one side and beating the opposite side with your most trusted heavy hammer the other side ! Hard ! :D

I have one that looks exactly like this and never had a problem since, not sure what manufacturer mine is?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BALL-JOIN...SCISSOR-TYPE-20-50MM-HEAVY-DUTY-/221127832675

What I do is stick it on, wind it up, eventually it'll get tight and the arms will begin to bend under tension. If it still hasn't popped off, a few heavy blows directly inline with the balljoint usually works. If it still doesn't budge, put the kettle on and make a cuppa, with the rest of the boiled water carefully at arms length pour it over the balljoint (worth putting the mug down beforehand) and in my experience it would explode apart

On one I had to boil the kettle a second time, never had any more trouble than that.

I guess the trick is to try and not snap the balljoint splitter in two, if it's the same as my one, it will just visibly bend a little, and there will be plenty of force on the joint. Trying to wind the bolt in more will only permanently bend it and lead to early failure. The boiled kettle works by rapidly heating and expanding the metal in a localised area, using a blowtorch usually heats it all up slowly and uniformly, and burns the grease and rubber boots instead of breaking the joint.

Well the top one has come off. Just the front end of the steering rod (and the bottom ball joint which i havent tried yet) left.

The steering rod has claimed another victim...

I've tried heat, bashing with 2 hammers, boiling water, 4 different ball joint splitters, this one removed the other end of the steering rod...

I'd have happily broken the tool if the joint was separated but it seems that eventuality wasn't meant to be. Will have to try something new next weekend :(

Just caught back up with this Rich, glad you're happy with the radiator.
On topic, have you tried from all possible angles? And all possible rotations of the wheels? Sometimes that's all it's taken in my experience.
Is the wing off so you can give it all you've got uninhibited by potential damage?
Do you have a long drift or stake etc you can use as an extension to hit hard and use a full swing with?
Good luck, it will likely pop off and surprise when you least expect it.
Intimidate it
Jim

Can you spray it with wd40 and put a splitter on it and leave it overnight a bit of tension and time might help along with a periodical attack with a blow torch.

If you can't get it off can you remove it and get it pressed out at a garage?
