PAE .... Sleipnir???

drumroll please.... it works! Woohoo :D

timing cover on, new radiator in (working beautifully thanks Jim!)

We have no oil light on when up to temperature at idle. We have no water leaking out...

So now it's MOT time...

I need to fix the rad in,
put fan on,
replace vacuum servo pipe,
top up rad with antifreeze,
have a scout round underneath
give it a good wash
Top up autobox fluid as it will have lost some while the radiator was disconnected.

Then we'll try for the MOT as it's out at the moment.

Sounds very nice with the new timing chain.

There is still a tap from the top of the engine, but having looked I'm pretty sure this is down to a valve on the head being missing that little silver collar. I have new range rover heads to go on when I feel like I need something to do :)

Thanks Harvey, quattro, Vaultsman, unstable load, Stina... well all of you for your help in getting here. It's been emotional ;)

Rich.

Thanks :)

It's a bit smokey up top now with these heads, but that's probably a result of the new found oil pressure ;) I'll get it through the MOT before changing the heads and hopefully i can sort it in a week or two with the range rover heads i have sitting in the shed...:)

Well a quick trip to the garage to demonstrate the bonnet catch and to tighten a hose clip i missed last night and they're going to try again....

It's a fail :(

The second MOT tester knew about p6s enough to tell me about the suspension...

We need to level the lights,
Replace offside upper front suspension ball joint dust cover
Replace offside steering link ball joint
replace offside lower front suspension ball joint dust cover

replace nearside steering link ball joint dust cover.

I've never dismantled any of this stuff... How difficult is it? I'll probably work out how to do the lights easily enough...

No worries, if you use a decent ball joint puller, it will not take more than an hour.
Side rod and boots are readily available.

It's time for smiles! :D

Your biggest problem will be splitting the top & bottom joints. If the "steering link" is the siderod then the whole thing needs to be replaced to replace the worn joint. Once the joints are split fitting the boots is child's play.

Cool. If i'm splitting the joints do i need to replace them all or is it ok just to put them back together afterwards? Do i need a specific grease to pack them out with? off side means drivers side doesnt it? I've seen mention of left hand and right hand screw on the steering rod... any idea which i'd need?

Thanks,

Rich

No need to replace the joint.

General purpose grease. O/S is Driver's side. (RHD)

That's the track rod then, which can be fitted either way around, so you'll have to look at the threads visible.

any recommendations as to the best type of ball joint splitter? dont mind spending a bit for the right tool, but dont want to spend more than necessary...

Thanks :)

Rich.

A strong one! The ones that close like fingers are the best, but don't buy a Halford one cos they snap when you belt them with hammers...

thanks Arthuy :) I have had a good experience with the Nielsen impact bits i got a couple of years back so i'll get that :)

Well i'm having a hard time with these ball joints... The one of the top of the strut has come off ok but i cant get the steering rods ones out. The ball joint tool was under so much tension that it's shattered bits of the end of the bolt on the front of the steering rod and and the other end is verging on impossible to get access to.

I need to get a different boot for the one that has come off as the one i ordered was too small. It was listed as p6 but obviously for a different joint.

Going to put the wheel back on and come back to it another day i think.
