P6: there is to do just a little bit

Thank you for yor reponse, ghce! In March 2013 I want to visit your country (as you perhapsyly knwing we austrian are in february for skying) and I will be look for parts as I needed... Not only for power steering! I will visit a couple of junk yards to collect parts...

Hi Reinhard, if you make it down to the South Island and Christchurch It would be nice to meet, I am sure there would be several p6 owners who would be glad to meet you here.

If it is not to difficult I would change from the standard steering system to a power steering system. The question is what do I need, is it available?!
Hi Reinhard, stay in touch! I plan to carry out the same conversion. At present, I have in my garage the following parts for PAS:

Steering box.
PAS pump, reservoir and bracket(s).
Front pulley for PAS belts.

These are the major components, but I am unsure if there is anything else I need, and so I will be picking the brains here on the forum. This project is some way off for me, but if we put our heads together we will be well prepared in advance.

I also have two ZF 4HP22 gearboxes (one from a BMW 525 and one from a Discovery V8) in my garage for combining into the appropriate unit to replace my BW35, which is showing signs of tiredness at 98,000 miles. Two interesting projects to undertake, but first I just need to finish the present round of work!

There are sone questions

Well, as you know I have parked my P6 together with some guys in a very old industry hall. Now, at October 2013 we have to leave this hall due to disrepair. This is not really a problem but newsworthy. And: perhaps I will miss the possibilities to repair some bagatelles resp. to improve some of the necessary things because there was also a lifting platform in our garage. But that's the way it is: the time doesn't stand still.

Yesterday I talked with one of the other renters. Due to my P6 parked in front of two of his ginettas he had to change the position of my P6 temporarly. Unfortunately it was very difficult because suddenly the ignition lock of my P6 is damaged. I don't know why?! I will have a look on it next weekend to analyze the reason why. If the ignition lock is really damaged: where I may get such a part? Is there anybody knowing an address or is it easy to repair?

Another information: in September 2013 I am planning a travel through the south of great britain. My plan is to visit scrap yards/breakers' yards for photo session, but also to have a look to find (perhaps) a set of Sundyms for my P6. If you know any dealer who delivers Sundyms I would be very thankfully. Also I will be very thankfully for any hints and tipps about addresses of scrap and/or breakers' yards.

Update

At the end of September the P6 was transferred from the old Garage to a new one. Unfortunately, the new is more than 50 km far away from my home address. But for the winter season the problem is solved and everything is ok. It was necessary to do this using a trailer because the ignition lock didn't work. In the next weeks I will try to repair it. Also, I want to reassemble the parts below the dashboard which I had removed to change the choke-wire.

In March 2014 I will mount the rostyles which I have bought. As I have heard here in Austria from the former president of the Rover Club Austria, Rostyles are never around, a car with this wheels will always vibrate. But I think I have learned from my old Mini a lot of years ago, how I have to mount wheels correctly. It was important to mount the nuts one after the other and to shake the wheel so that all cone do fit properly. Otherwise, the car has vibrates even though the wheels were balanced. Hopefully this method will work also in case of Rostyles?!

Or what are you thinking is important that Rostyles generate no problems?

And finally: what tyres would you prefer in conjunction with Rostyles?

Hello Reinhard
I have rostyles on my P6. I have 195/70/14 tyres Khumo , and they are equal on the road c/f the more expensive michelin that I used to have on her .
Gerald

Hi @all! Thanks a lot for your replies! Thanks also for the Information about "Kumho"! I will try this tyres (in the past I always used Micheline)!

Some more pictures about the next steps of restoration (as you can see one page before, the door panels as well as the leather equipment is already renewed). In this session I changed the artificial wood against real wood, I repaired the steering wheel and I gave the bumper parts to the chorme plating.

In case of steering wheel the problem was, it had some cracks at the spokes. Therefore I had to seal them first before I could paint the steering wheel new. Here, of course, I tried to reproducethe wood effect.

Please look at the Pictures from bottom up....

Hi @all!

The last weeks I was very busy but nevertheless I had a lot of leasure with my P6. So the MOT (in Austria: the "Pickerl":)) was now renewed, new tyres are mounted on the Rostyles, the car is polished and cleaned totally. Everything could be ok when there are not two new interesting phenomenons will be detected:

* the ignition lock works partially: I put the key in and turn it, then the engine starts but if I let off the key then the engine stopps. It seems the consequence of the weight of the key generates the problem!? This failure can be reproduced. What I have to do to solve the problem? Is there any description available for such a case? Also, if I have to replace the ignition lock?!

* the gauge for water temperature shows high value already after "ignition on" even when the engine is cold and not started. It seems that the transmitter is ok. What may be the problem?

Thanks a lot for hints and tipps!

Some information

First of all: the last two Problems I had reported are already solved. I changed the electrical part of the ignition as well as I changed the transmitter(?) for the water temperature.

But now an other Problem exists: for the air distribution control as well as for the temperature control both lever are more or less without any option to use them in any condition as wished. If I lift one of the both Lever the gravitation is responsible that the Lever falls down again. What may the reason for this? Can me anybody give a hint what I have to do? It's important for me because of the weather condition it is now really uncomfortable to drive the car with a permanent active heater....

Thanks a lot!

Great looking car - I do like a P6 on Rostyles.
Good job on repair and wood effect on that steering wheel.

Mark.

Thanks a lot for your comment!

Since I know a little bit more then one and a half year that I fight against cancer - and it seems I did it with success - I will reach a target.

And in autumn of 2017 I am able to retire as the law in Austria allows.

And I promised my wife if everything (you know, what I mean) is ok, my survival trip will be done together with her to new zealand, the country of my dreams. For in minimum 4 month. When I will survive, we - my wife (I am married her more than 30 years ago) and me - will do that for in minimum 4 month. So that's a reason to fight!
