P6: there is to do just a little bit

First of all: my car is in an acceptable condition. Paint and interieur is quite well. Also the technical function is more or less free of troubles.

But, unfortunately, not in each case. So I have something do to in the winter months.

For example: the left SU carb had a leak (the connector line was the reason). Last friday I repaired it: I demounted the carburettor, also the connector line and changed it. After assembling it works.

But now I have another problem: If I start the car, the engine runs very shortly before go out. I observed that all the locator (of tachometer, etc.) dipped; in the same moment the engine stops. In this sequence. I presume an electrical fault. But: where?

Some years ago I had a compareable error. Because of missing experiences I consulted a Rover-workshop and I described the situation. Also, that the problem must be an electrical one. The Rover-workshop didn't want to believe it is a power problem; they thought it stands in context with the fuel system. So they removed the petrol tank and cleaned it installed an electrical petrol pump and did something else. After paying a lot of money I drove home with the car. But approximately 2 or 3 km later the engine fall out. A next round started by the workshop. And I payed again a little bit more....

Then, I drove home but I was a little bit nervous to drive with the car in Vienna. What, if the problem starts again?

And of course it happened half an year later, when I tried it. Saturday on evening during heavy traffic. I went home by tram and tried it sunday early in the morning. The P6 worked quite well....

So I consulted another workshop (meanwhile I owned also an Super7 and on detours I got to know an independent workshop specialized for such good, old english cars). I brought the P6 to that workshop and described the problem. The mechanic had suggested that I gave him the car for a while that he can drive and on this way to detect the reason. The next day I received a call and he explained me, what the problem was: the brake switch was oxidated. When I used the brake sometime a short-circuit was generated... He cleaned the switch, gave an anti-oxidation fluid on it. And the problem was solved. For a minimum of money.

I think a similar problem is now the reason for my technical problems. Is there anyone who could give me a tipp? Which part may be now the reason? As I checked yesterday the brake switch is not the reason why...

And there are some other bagatelles: for example to prettify the interieur I want to change the unspeakable "mahogany"-imitation. Last Saturday I bought veneer. Now I need also a sheet of aluminium. Then I will sticking the veneer and the aluminium together will cut off the panels and then I will replace the old ones. So the idea! We will see what happens in reality...

Last but not least: I bought Rostyles. In the next weeks I will replace the old wheels. But there is also a problem: I want to applicate a red line on the new tyres. This will be an experiment (for me). Hopefully it works - photos shall document the success or the opposite of success.

The rest are subtile improvements on the car. In case of technical doings I will document the steps with photos and upload here in this project description.

Hi Reinhard,

Does your Rover retain points within the distributor or is there an electronic ignition system fitted? If the latter, what type of system is it? What make and type of ignition coil is fitted?

I am sure that I can speak for everyone on the forum and say that we are all looking forward to seeing some photos of your Rover.. :)

Ron.

Hi Ron!

Good questions! My P6 has an electronic ignition and on friday I will take a look for more details. I am sorry, but it was build in a couple of years ago.

The second part of your response: of course, I will upload pictures in near future but yesterday when I tried it I received an error message.

Thanks a lot for your kindly comments! As I described in another posting I renewed a couple of years ago the upholstery of the seats as well as the door panels. When the colour on the photos seems different between seats and panels so in reality the colour is more the same.

I promise, I will upload some pictures if I have had washed the car. So you will see, also the painting is in a quite good condition.

Nevertheless, there is something to do :) For example: the buffers of the bumper (sorry, but I don't know the right expression - hopefully you understand what I mean!?) are currently not mounted because they are in really poor conditions (Rubber and Chrome, one of them has a hole. OBTW: the bumpers are already rechromed). So I dismounted the rubbers from the buffers and now the buffers should be rechromed. The new rubbers I have already...

The door panels I must remove again because I will have a look whether the doors are rusty or not. For safety I will paint them with hammerit. It will be done when I change the mahogany-panels as announced.

what a lovely car! :)

I think the bumpers look pretty good without the overriders :)

There is always something to do

Because I was a little bit sick this weekend (influenza) I worked just a little bit on my good old Rover. Keep in mind that my vehicle is LHD! I'm going to document it from now on with pictures for a better understanding. I will only document work I have done myself. If there is any professional help I think it is not necessary because it would be redundant and not really helpful (I am just a bungler).

This weekend I repainted parts of the carburettor and assembled them afterwards. Also I have changed the acrylic cover in front of the instruments. And last but not least I derusted the number plate holder mounted on the boot lid (it is very simple, so I wont describe this action).

As you see on picture 1 the air filter-box was in a poor condition. So I dismounted all the parts, derusted all of them cleaned them with benzine and then I painted it. For a better result I have hung up all the parts. So I was quite sure that I would not have problems with areas without new paint and so on. For example:

image002.jpg

After preparation phase, the painting started (Hammered finish spray paint?!):

image004.jpg

image005.jpg

The hose clamps I have also derusted and then only painted with clear varnish

image007.jpg

After processing, the result was like this (in the background you can see one of my other cars: also very British, of course but not free of some troubles)

image008.jpg

And the mounting brackets (?!) in black:

And now mounted/after assembling:

image013.jpg

During the wait-time (between painting the last time and drying) I changed the cover in front of the instruments. All I needed was a screwdriver. Nothing else! Duration: max. 15 minutes! I think it is necessary if I have to change some bulbs…

Attention: LHD!

The reason to change was a crack in the old cover:
image014.jpg

On the left side as well as on the right side there are two panels. I had to remove them because behind these two panels are the screws holding the cover.

On the left panel there is a strange screw which fixes the panel (I thought). Because I cannot open this screw I pushed it an – surprise! - this panel is like a clip!

image015.jpg

image016.jpg

Then I removed the right panel:

Result:

Next step (the screw laying on the dashboard is on the picture by chance):

image020.jpg

On the left side:

image021.jpg

I opend the 4 screws (the big one with the slotted-head) changed the cover and voilá (the crack in the steering wheel is one of the next challenges…):

image022.jpg

I hope this description is a little bit helpful?!

Next step: I will change the choker-bowden wire. I dismounted already the loudspeaker panel in the middle of the dashboard. And the loudspeaker, too.

image023.jpg

But then I stopped working because I had trouble:

image024.jpg

The choker wire is fixed against the dashboard (see above). But: behind the panel there is a screw I cannot open it. I have no tool to do that and I was a little bit sick. So I stopped working after approximately 4 hours for all that I described above. Perhaps I must open the nut by turning the silver slice/ring (?! you can see two pictures above) holding the choker wire against the central console. I will reporting….

And now a question: is there anybody knowing the functionality of those three wires? They are located on the right side of the dashboard behind the glove box.

image025.jpg

And at the end a curiosity! I cleaned up the boot. You can’t believe what I found. Tools, of course, different liquids, wire brushes, etc. etc. And parts of a dress shirt. Memories was awakened: in the year 1992 when I bought the rover I wanted to clean the car with adequate care and so I was looking for an excellent cleaning cloth. Hmm, what I found was the dress shirt which I wore when my wife and I got married. So you can see a part of our marriage thirty years ago.

I know the yellow/bleu is for additional foglights.
I look this weekend this week i have no much time for looking.

What I want to say is that I am very happy to found Rich's forum! There are very kindly people! And if I had found this forum earlier my P6 would be in a very better condition than now, because it makes fun to do something and to report it! With Rich's support it is great (to report in an acceptable english) and easy! Thank you for all, Rich!

If it is not to difficult I would change from the standard steering system to a power steering system. The question is what do I need, is it available?! Could you help me, please? As you see in my profile, i am not the youngest (as member yes but not as an user of a P6)

Hi,

Not my forum - I'm just one of 4 people behind the scenes :)

Glad you like it and hope you'll stay!

Rich

May be, but I don't know, Rich! I learned a bit about you and I know only you as a very helpful guy (sorry, if I expressed it not understandeable)

Firstly, thank you Reinhard for joining the forum, your wonderful pictures are an inspiration to all and thank you to Rich for enabling those pictures, hopefully soon the picture posting issues will be all fixed.
Secondly, power steering is a relatively easy to achieve objective with all the parts available from donar scrapped cars, others here can detail the proceedure, the list of required parts is relativly small, indeed you may well find all the info on a site search, others will undoubtably chime in soon.
