Ouch... Sleipnir's turn for a bump :(

The sandwich lady at work reversed straight back into the front bumper. Knocked off the front overrider, bent the bracket that the front bumper attaches to and dented the front valence. (while i was in it with the horn on ).

Now if this was a stranger it'd be easy and i could claim on the insurance. as it is they've offered to have somebody they know fix it. Before i agree though i really need to know if there's anything i need to check with regards making sure no bending of anything structural at the front that i cant see has taken place...

Thanks,

Rich.

 <tremble>

Be very careful, some people's idea of a repair may be very different to yours.

Welcome to the club btw :D

Don't do it!

I've seen this situation a few times with friends and it almost always ends in tears and a big fall out.

The only benefit of the arrangement is to the other party. Invariably the repairs aren't done properly because the repairer is friends with the person paying the bill who wants to minimise the cost.

I agree with the above replies. Find a repairer you're happy to use, get them to give you a pro-forma for the repairs, and then offer the other party the chance to pay that amount. If they don't agree tell them you'll be putting the matter into the hands of your insurance company to let them sort it all out. If it does go through the insurance, regardless of what they tell you, you have the right to have it repaired at a repairer of your choice. Providing of course that his charges are fair and reasonable.

It is an awkward situation, but try and forget you know her, if it were a complete stranger that suggested it, would you agree to it ? Your answer to that is the way to go. I know what mine would be. Lets hope it isn't damaged beyond what you can see.

I had a guy fishtail into the front of a 75 TS Alfa once.
He was in the motor trade, and so offered to fix it..."do a proper job".
I'm not kidding...a 5 year old with a touch up can and some Playdoh would have done a better job.
The reason the party at fault usually offers to fix is because they know it will be cheaper for them; not the best job outcome for you.
I would be non negotiable...3 quotes from repairers of your choice under insurance. (Theirs)

Hi Rich , sorry to hear that . Welcome to the club anyhoo , that's 4 of us within 6 months  Gotta agree with all the other replies though , she's only looking for her best option :!:

Any ideas how i'd be fixed for the fact that some of the panels they damaged were less than sound? The wing has rust under the light and the front valence was a little bent at the bottom. The wing has been pushed back and the paint chipped but it is also in bad condition to start with.

The potential for unseen damage is actually what worries me more than anything. The paint on the car is fairly scruffy so as long as the colour matches....

Thanks

Rich.

Rich

Sorry to hear about your shunt. As above, get it done properly. I work closely with an industry that often involves disputes between so-called friends or colleagues who have said they'd do a good job......it never turns out well.

Hope you get it sorted

Dave

As you're unlikely to find new panels ayway, so good used will be fitted, and in the case of insurance companies, they will authorise a "contract repair" whereby used panels can be fitted, and once a satisfaction note is completed they will pay out. If new panels were being used they would ask for a contribution towards the cost to account for the fact that they weren't in perfect condition to begin with. Same applies if tyres are damaged, if new ones are fitted a contribution is made to account for the wear on the old, damaged one.

As for any unseen damage, get it inspected by someone who knows what they are looking at. I very much doubt it's pushed the crossmember back, and thet's the only big problem you need to be concerned about.

And here we can see the wing has been pushed back a little ( and chipped the paint because of it...)

So in all i think it could have been worse, but any ideas as to what i should look for in terms of hidden damage?

Thanks,

Rich

Hi Rich.

I would take it to your nearest P6 expert for a verdict.
I am sure between us on the forum we can find you a good mexico s/h wing, valence, bumper and mount iron, and that may be all you need, could probably all be got for less than £100 inc p/p,and its an easy days diy job with tea breaks,or you could get a person you trust,or the expert to do the fitting.
To be honest would there be any point having a freshly painted wing and valence, and a new bumper,as you would have to do the rest to match!
If I were in your position owning your car,I would try to get her to agree to a cash settlement and fix it yourself.
However, you have to be sure there is no hidden damage, but it sounds like a slow impact,so the wing mounts are probably just bent a little.

Look behind the crossmember where it meets the inner wing to see if that's moved back (unlikely) and look at the extensions that the inner bumper irons mount on to see whether thay have been pushed backwards into the front of the crossmember. Also look for any witness marks that show something has moved, such as rad mounts etc.

I would echo the above points. Also from experience, if you contact YOUR insurance company to tell them of the accident (might be in the smallprint of your policy) make sure to tell them that you are NOT making a claim. I didn't & it was another issue to deal with. My insurance record states that I have made a claim in the last 5 years, which I haven't.

Again, as has been said above - 'Welcome to the club'. It's unfortunately a pay-off/risk for enjoying a P6 as a daily driver.

Thanks guys :) I know where to look now!

I have a couple of tobacco glass fibre wings from Chris W so given the ones that are on there are a bit crumbly it'll be a good excuse. The valence and mounts I'll have to get hold of like you say...

As a former insurance man I agree with everyone who has said not to let her friends repair it . You wouldn't be their "customer" and would have little comeback. Getting cash off her is OK as long as it's the amount you decide
You may want to get your sandwiches elsewhere for a while in case she slips a slice of horse into yours
