Ensuring this Forum stays up and running

I am not currently a paid-up member of the club, but I do frequent this Forum regularly and value it very highly as a resource. If the club does cease to exist I am of the opinion that it is vital that this Forum continue to exist, although presumably under another name. I do not have any experience maintaining or hosting a forum such as this, but I'm a quick learner. I work as a freelance designer, increasingly including web design projects, which I achieve with the invaluable assistance of my programmer. He has plenty of available web space, so if the existence of this Forum is threatened I think I can offer some back-up in terms of hosting at very very reasonable cost. If the webmaster would like to discuss this please feel free to drop me a line. Regretfully (actually I don't regret it much at all!) I no longer live in the UK, but would certainly serve in an administrative capacity from far flung Berlin if there were anything useful I could do. Long live all our P6s.

Many thanks for the support and offer of assistance, at this time there is no threat to the continuity of this forum, regardless of the outcome of the current club situation. :D

Richard,

Thanks again for a great forum. Will the web address be the same or different after 31/12?

Cheers Tony Bunting

Thanks Tony, I will be making a full anouncement over the next couple of days, I have several addresses pointing at this forum, but I'm probably going to re-brand the forum as "The Classic Rover Forum", for which I have http://www.classicroverforum.com , which should be up and running shortly.

Thanks Colin, I'll keep that in mind. Please note that the forum will no longer be linked to any particular club, so won't be branded as a club site, in fact I will encourage all Rover clubs to use it to promote events etc. So hopefully it will become more useful to your members.

To help support the other models, I would like to add seperate sections for each model, any suggestions for this would be greatly appreciated.

Colin, just had a good look around your site and I like it. You're club is exactly like our local club, formed from the local regions of the P6ROC, P4DG and P5Club, we call ours The Yorkshire Rover Club, although I haven't got round to making a nice website for ours yet. We organise a local rally every year and try to attend as many other local rallies as we can.

It's interesting how owners of the various models seem to come together, also that many owners have more than one model in their "collection", people seem to be Rover enthusiasts rather than specific model enthusiasts.

Thanks for your comment Richard. We are just a small group, and we are 'Rover' enthusiasts as opposed to specific model enthusiasts as you say.

I look forward to your new all Rover Forum and will make our members aware of it and encourage them to support it.

A couple of questions: I have renewed my membership of P6ROC for 2010. Will the 'new look' P6ROC website retain the main features of the existing site, ie P6 Index and the Gallery etc. - or is that a question I should be asking Deborah?

Will the new P6ROC continue to have it's own Forum as well?

Colin

Colin, I'm not entirely sure what Deborah has planned for a new website, probably best to write to her with suggestions etc. However I do know that due to the uncertainty over the last couple of months she hasn't actually started work on anything new, so I have agreed to leave the current site up for her as long as necessary. I don't think she has any plans to introduce a new forum.

Hope this helps.

Hi Richard.

The TR Registers forum I frequent has a very good layout for ease of use!
And seperate forums within the main site for different models discussions etc!
http://www.tr-register.co.uk/forums/index.php?
I do like the idea of the new rover forum being adapted for use by all classic rover owners.
I am sure it will continue to be a great success, and hope that any intellectual rights to index's,technical articles, info etc can be retained by the forum,or at least obtained by a rover owner or small group, and freely donated for use on the forum.

Regards Dave

Thanks Dave, I'll check out the TR forum.
We have discussed rights issues and have come to some agreements, so this shouldn't be a problem.

Hi Richard
When you go multi model please feel free to use anything from www.roverp2.org.uk also there is my article on there how I fitted power steering to a 1971 Rover 2000 auto which again you can use or link to as you think fit.

My collection and (paper based) sales stock will also be available to Richard for use on the forum.

Several items have already been used by the P6ROC in the past.

Hi Richard.

I also like your idea of a Forum for all Classic Rover Models.

Although specifically for the more modern Rover cars, mg-rover.org has a forum with separate sections for each model and also area sections and events sections as well.
It is at http://forums.mg-rover.org/ if you want a look

Regards,

Colin

I would just hope that by doing that there won't be a loss of focus, at the moment barring a few exceptions, every post in the tech section is P6 related, and divided nicely into relevant sections, and if other models are introduced and have their own section, incorporating their own tech problems then I think that will work well, but from my own point of view, whilst I appreciate the merits of other models, I'd have trouble maintaining interest trawling through postings for problems only to find it was a problem for a model I have absolutely no interest in personally, if it became such that all the tech postings were all lumped in together regardless of the model type.

The focus on one particular model up until now has been what has made this Forum sit right up the top of my favourites list. (That, and me being a sad Anorak!)

Ok guys some good suggestions here. Harvey, I agree lumping all tech problems together will cause no end of problems.

I was considering making the split right at the top level, so if your just interested in P6's, just go into the P6 section, and all the current tech sections will be there. General events, chat etc sections can be at the top too.

I would like suggestions as to where to put the clubs section, do I put one right at the top, or break them down, putting a clubs section in each model area. I guess this would give a problem with clubs such as the RSR which cover many models. Maybe best to put all the clubs up front, along with the Events diary.

I'll have a good look at the mg-rover forum for other ideas. The more modern rovers and MG's seem to be well covered by mg-rover and rovertech, so we'll probably stop at SD1 unless anybody protests, even though I am a die hard 800 fan !

I think Harvey's made a fair point, when I was working on VW's, most of the forums lump all the tech stuff together, and the flat-4's come in many guises.

It was just a pain in the arse trying to get an answer over anything.

One of the reasons I've kept on my p6 going, is because of the help and support offered by this forum, without that I'da scrapped/sold my car by now.

I've been on the 800 forum in the last few days - it's enormous - so vast that it's difficult to find information.

Already well catered for methinks!

Cheers
