Hi all , time for a running report .
I've done around a hundred miles since putting it all back together , and sorting a few teething issues ( the fuel pump still weeps around the inlet , despite having a new union made up and shortening the pipe to suit :x ) i think the original pipe has worn thin , i will get them to make me a new one .
As for the actual running of the engine , well it,s achieved what i was hoping for . Now i've set up the carb linkages and balance ( BAC needles after some discussion ) and set the timing etc . It has a nice smooth tickover and the top gear roll on acceleration is amazing ( the over used phrase of pulls like a turbine springs to mind ) Accompanied by a very purposeful growl :!:
I'll do another 100 miles then change the oil and filter .
The only issue i,m not totally happy with is the puff of blue smoke when starting from hot , it's not allot and clears straight away . It hasn't used any oil . I,m wondering if it will get better with use as the heads were chemically cleaned (and i cleaned the top of the pistons) , so there is no carbon as yet to slow up any oil running down the stems :?
I used these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120663856484? ... 1439.l2649 as i thought there was no easy way of fitting them after the heads were on , but if they give trouble after then i can destroy and pull them off after with a good set of long nosed pliers  I had the rocker covers off after it'd been through a few heat cycles to re check the head bolts and the seals were still sat in the correct position . I also wonder if they allow an amount of oil to sit on top of them and then find it,s way past as it's sat :? Thoughts :?:
Apart from that i,m really pleased with it
