Building my double garage at last!

I wouldn't worry about the electrics, as long as your installation complies (i.e. you do it properly), you can always get a full test / certification if you decide to sell up.

The other option is that as long as the circuit "plugs" into the mains in the house (i.e. it's not hard wired to the fusebox) it's not part of the main wiring, and hence doesn't need to comply. It's basically an extension lead.

The funny thing is, I've had electrical work do professionally at work, been certified, and then had them back to sort it out because it wasn't right.

Electricity doesn't bother me, I can test it, with easily available tools, as long as you follow simple rules it's safe. Not like gas, even I wouldn't touch gas !

I forgot to add, why isn't there some sort of course available that certifies you to work on your own house electrics ?, it's not rocket science, a few evening classes and a test could give somebody the necessary to do the majority of jobs around the house. Even if you have to re-take it every so often as the regs change.

I'm not talking full on - 3 phase industrial and everything else, just basic domestic wiring.

There is.... do any Part P course. Google it. That will allow you to certify domestic electrics in England & Wales.

Always make sure you you get an electrician who has 3rd party accreditation, preferably with the ECA for England & Wales and with SELECT in Scotland. The regulations in Scotland are completely different from those in England & Wales.

That's what the previous owners planned to do .I'm glad they didn't. DIY wasn't one of their skills

Hi all..
Been doing some scrounging/recycling recently. ;)
I managed 2 x 3m almost as new,1 black,1 green marble effect kitchen type worktops from skips,10 new sheets of 8'x4'x3/4" plywood free from an industrial unit refit to board out the loft with,"all now done",and I got 3 new strip lights from suppliers for free as they had slight damage and cant be sold! :)
All wired up via the armour cable extension with rcd from the house!
Ive been watching Tommy Walsh's new show, and as I had previously managed some good bargains like the elec roller door and steel rsj's,I though I would see what I could get for free!
Its amazing what you can get for free if you have the balls to be up front and ask!
If they are going to chuck it out anyway, might as well make use of it!
Silliest thing I got that was being chucked out as they were upgrading, are 4 portable commodes, each with a solid chromed tube framework and 4 large locking wheels as used in nursing homes!
Yes they had been thoroughly sanitized before I got my hands on them! :)
Ive turned 2 of them into wheel dollies to move the car sideways with, and used the other wheels to make 2 engine/box trollies 8)
Just waiting to purchase a very useful bit of kit for the garage, but more about that as and when its happened!
Its my Xmas prezzie from me to me!

There's money in other people's rubbish . There's been a few rag and bone men operating round here recently .Transit vans instead of horse and carts. They are very selective what they take

Are you sure your name's not pikey, pilkie....

I am a born scrooge!
I dont like paying out any more than is needed for anything!
And want more for my money as well! 8)
I would haggle with the Tesco,s self service till if I could!
BAH HUMBUG!!
BTW!! Good luck with your garage build, its coming on nicely, mines finishing touches have stalled at the moment as cant do the rendering till the weather gets better,at least its all watertight and useable!

By your Bah Humbug comments, are we to imply you're not full of festive spirit ?
I think Christmas is a pain in the backside

To right its a pita!! :x
Its just another thing designed to screw us out of our hard earned! :(
I do my best to avoid getting involved with it!
I will give my neice and nephew a card and £50 each and thats me done!
I always buy myself a sort of xmas prezzie, but its dependant on the amount spare splash cash, and its more of an end of the year treat for being a good boy!
One year,as I was pissed off with carol singers,I made up a door sign saying;
"SCROOGE LIVES HERE GO AWAY,BAH HUMBUG" It worked! :D
On xmas day/boxing day,and the hols,I will most likely be stripping the spare TR6 engine I recently bought and checking it over, then rebuild it with a new gasket set,so its ready incase of emergency!
Or I could be assembling my prezzie from me,to me if I get it in time!
Loads more fun! :D

Am hoping to treat myself to 2 things, both will be disclosed as and if I get them.
And both blow away the idea of me being a scrooge,as they are a pure endulgeance, and aint cheap!
But then ive been saving up some blow money!
1, hopefully very soon, and the other I may have to wait till March next year!

Cheers mate. I've got some good builders, I too don't like paying over the odds for anything, I'd have built the garage myself if I had an ounce of bricklaying skills, but I fear I may have made a pig's breakfast of it, and it would've taken 20 times longer. Still, I'm really pleased with my builders, they're very reasonable, came recommended by a friend, and they work really hard. Now that the rain's gone away, they're really cracking on, and are hoping to get the roof on by Christmas! 8)

I love christmas, spend a good few hours making my christmas list from the Machine Mart catalogue, then I've got some useful presents to play with on christmas day ! Wife still insists on buying me clothes though, can't have everything.

Spoke too soon methinks.... The end of the rain spelled the beginning of the cold snap. We've had snow, sleet, all sorts since last week. Temps below zero, so bricklaying out of the question. There was only 2 courses of blockwork left to plate level when it started snowing bigtime here, then Christmas kicked in. Still, hopefully next week will see some progress, and at least the cold snap was partially absorbed by the Christmas hols... :|

Something always crops up!
I cant get my main prezzie now till new year, due to weather,Xmas, and the sellers house hasnt exchanged yet,and he says he cant do the deal till that has happened!
So I hope all goes well soon, because if things go tits up and he has to stay put,I cant have it!
