In the classics world, if you ask me for an opinion they are somewhat overdone all round because these days its a hobby, the car isn't transport. They weren't really all that common an accessory by the time the P6 came along being more 1950s and pre-war thing and they are somewhat of an anathema to clean, high-tech design principles of the P6.
Being such a dramatic statement in design and technology I generally think customizing the P6 more often than not will detract rather than enhance, it immediately catches the eyes and jars. This is the same as anything with a clear design ethos, like putting a hand-knitted cover on a Phillipe Starck juicer.
Whereas something like an escort of the time was nearly always modified in some way from fluffy dice upwards. They almost look "wrong" on standard, steel rims.
