Autobox problems after long sleep..

If you have an early gearbox, with a late selector plate in the car, and you select "2", you should get full auto. If you select "D" you should pullaway in second and change up to Top and shunt between those two gears as req'd, but it won't ever select 1st in that position. Sounds like that's the problem you've got, which obviously isn't the problem you thought you had at the start of the thread.

Just been for a quick run in the Rover, pulled away in "2" and surprise surprise we have 3 GEARS..... Car seems much more lively now its actually found bottom gear! I cant believe how low top gear is though, I think I might swap the diff for the spare V8 one ive got eventually as theres no hills to worry about round here.

Regrettably the 4 cylinder is a bit of a problem for alternative gearboxes be they auto or manual. Since it was only ever used in the P6 and died at the end of P6 production there are no ready made bellhousings to suit alternative boxes. As with everything in engineering, if you're determined enough anything is possible, but it certainly won't be straightforward.

As well as offering Toyota 5 speeds for the V8 Conversion Components in New Zealand offer a kit to add a 5 speed to 4 cylinder cars, using a Toyota T50 from a RWD corolla
http://www.conversioncomp.co.nz/

You can buy the kits with a used, inpected gearbox or supply your own. My new V8 has one of their kits installed and it's very professional arrangement

Rover TC2000 to TOYOTA T50 5 Speed Gearbox
Specifications
  • Bell Housing - cast aluminium, complete with pilot bush and sleeve and gaskets.
Clutch fork hydra, thrust bearing on carrier, clips.
    Clutch plate (conversion 8 1/2")
    Pressure plate 8 1/2"
    Speedo cable
For slave cylinder - use Rover original

Wow!

That looks beautifully engineered, and the provenance of the gearbox looks fine too.

I reckon that's just under £1,500 delivered to the UK including everything. From experience with fitting ZF HP24's I'd say that was a bargain!

Now fit a V8 diff as well and you've got a thoroughly modern cruiser!

The site has gone straight into my favourites list!

Going back to the gearbox that was the original subject for the thread, if, as it seems you have the early PRND2D1L gearbox, but the later PRND21 selector plate, and you want to make the gearbox match the later pattern, (as it's more user friendly) then you need to remove the D2/D1 valve on the valve block, and replace it with the Range Control Valve as fitted in the later boxes, and that should do it.

I think I might take the easy option and just change the little panel on the gear shifter for now (if I can find one). At least now I know the gearbox is working as it should. At least its had a good clean out and oil change (twice!).
