Another bonnet badge

hi tokyop6b,
yes, my supplier as well as me will guarantee them for 5 years. as the saying goes ( put your money where your mouth is ) if you are in new zealand and would like to order one, or anybody else for that matter, i will sell you one and give you one to leave outside on the understanding it must be left outside in all weathers and we can do a long term test, if anybody is willing to do so, as you think the weather is that different. california gets temperatures upto 110 and 120 degrees.

A very generous offer! it's not the temp (though still a big factor in plastic degradation) but NZ (and Argentina) we have pretty much UV that will cause physical blindness (no exageration) as we suffer from a seasonal hole in the Ozone layer that protects the planet. Though I am sure that your product will last better than the OEM fitted badge as UV stabilised plastics tech has moved on from the 60's and 70's.

hi ghce,
thanks for the reply. this is the kind of feedback i am after. i need someone who will do this properly and give an accurate feedback of what if anything is happening. we could even send it back to the manufactures and back to new zealand ( at my cost ) yearly for an indication of what if anything is happening to it.

Hi all,
an update on how the badge is coming along. the pictures are of a blank insert, but now have the metal crimped edge around them which has been a success. obviously a blank is / was used to make sure it worked ok as it is no good using a painted one if it is not going to work. next pictures should be of the final pre-production sample which will be painted for you all to see.

That looks fantastic!
I'm sure the painted sample will look even better.
I'm surprised no ones asked if the series one grille badge can be reproduced.

Hi all,
not found that out, but probably could. tried several places to get the door - glass seals re-produced as per original with the metal strip and have all come out around the same price, the expense firstly is the mould cost, makes no difference if i have 10 or 10,000 made each mould is around £1,400.00 x 4 then the cost of making each one £9.00 - £10.00 so on the first batch of say making a 100 of each with the price of the mould each one comes in at around £23.00 - £24.00 that is before i put a mark up on them. so a set of four before me making any money would be £92.00 - £96.00 makes them expensive and in my opinion not viable. one thing i would like to reproduce is the rear decker seal, but would only do so with a new old stock one as to get the size right. so if any body has one i can either buy or borrow, i will get that remade.

Hi all,
the next stage in the bonnet badge production. this is the final sample and as you can see is all complete, painted, backing plate with studs and the rolled edge around it. i am awaiting the badge for final inspection by myself and then production will start.

p.s. comments please ?

Hi willy,
yes it is mild steel, but i think all the people that buy the badge will give it a good coating of some sort of rust proofing. would you sooner have it in stainless steel if that could be done ?

If that's feasible, it would be reassuring in case moisture enters and it starts rusting from the back. But I take your point, and any protection will be more than the original got!

Hi willy,
as i am having them re-made in california, the answer will be tomorrow hopefully. the originals were put on at the factory with nothing on the back and have lasted how many years, decades. so with a bit of rust prevention on the back, the use the cars get now, these should last longer than the originals.

I have to agree with the others, that really does look superb! 8)
Though I'd prefer a stainless backing plate too, if it's a possiblility.

I think it's fabulous that parts like these are getting remanufactured, looking exactly as the original but even better quality.
A far cry from the support that some other 'classics' seem to get. Top man Joseph!

Looks the business Joseph. Reserve one for me please. Looking forward to fitting one of those as the finishing touch to my rebuild!

Oh my word that badge looks tremendous... I am sure that doing the metal backing in Stainless Steel would make it better in terms of longevity... Well done for bringing back a really sought after part for our beloved P6's...

Hi all,
many thanks for all your positive comments. i wish i could take all the credit for the badge, but it goes to the guy who is making them for me, a very talented guy indeed. cost will be around the £60.00 - £65.00 mark, inc VAT, plus postage. i will know more in a few weeks. cost varies a bit as i am paying in dollars as they are being made in california and the dollar rate as gone down 16 cents which makes a difference as i have yet to pay another $7400.00 for the badges, at the moment that is around £5000.00 if they had been ready 6 weeks ago i could have saved or it would have cost me around £350.00 less, plus also shipping costs yet to pay. sorry for the lolong winded reply, but it gives you an idea why the cost of the badge is not yet quite known, i do not know yet and i am not sure how duty works when something is brought from a foreign country. i have fetched different small bits and pieces in for my own personal use for my NADA, sometimes it goes straight through customs without any payment due at all and then sometimes you get stung. i know i will have the VAT to pay as i am VAT registered. a month ago i bought two new single chrome window switches from the states and paid VAT, £10.00 for the paper work and duty, which is what ever they want ( i have no idea how they decide ), if you don't pay you don't get it, it is simple as that. two years ago i bought a second hand motor for the windows and duty was if i remember rightly about £27.00 i only paid £35.00 for the motor. i have had other things which have gone straight through customs and no payment at all.

Hi all,
update on the backing plate. he has only made a handfull in mild steel for sample purposes, so i am waiting for the extra cost, which he said should be minimal. so i will proceed to get them made with a stainless steel back. i hope that meets to every one's approval. before it is too late is there anything else or is that it, have we cracked it !!!!!!!!!!!
