Another bonnet badge

(Apologies, I'm moving this post from the "Free to a good home" section as it doesn't really fit in there)

A colleague at work made up a mould from an old bonnet badge of mine and has been experimenting with forming badges in clear resin. I've fitted one to my P6 and am pretty pleased with it, though I could have taken a little more care fitting the surround.

The "dome" is slightly exhaggerated to thicken up the material and prevent cracking. It's not 100% symmetrical but looks pretty good to me. As you can see, it could do with finishing off with a good polish to remove the hint of finger marks and improve the shine.

When I have a minute, I'll have another go at fitting a surround myself and photograph my method.

Considering that the original was in four pieces, I'm amazed that he managed to make it look so good. It is possible to see where it cracked on the viking's helmet, but you wouldn't normally notice. Also, I'm not sure that the red colour is spot on, as I haven't got one in good enough original condition to compare.
Am I allowed to mention that he's willing to make and paint some more at 25 pounds a go?

Looks like Ian Wilson has managed to source a supplier to remanufacture the Bonnet Badge.

Rover Classics

He doesn't yet say to what quality ie. just like the original, or the metal enamel type, but it has to be good news.

Well done Ian.

Hi all,
The bonnet badge is being made at the moment and should be ready around the 23rd march. It is being made to original specification and I am getting samples as it progresses. The rolled round edging was going to be the hardest thing to re-create, but it has been overcome with no serious problems. The first samples are a blank clear insert and a painted one, this has only roughly been painted to show what it will look like. Production models will have finer detail. These are the first I had and have ten faults. I had to be told about them as the supplier is a stickler for detail ( his reputation relies on it ) four or five you might be able to see if you have a good badge to compare it against, ( one you won't is the ROVER lettering is 0.05 yes 0.05 too large, that is his attention to detail ) I have had pictures of the next sample with the backing, studs, and rolled edge round it, and I am awaiting for them to arrive. I will upload those pictures when they arrive. Like tor said, it is being made in the USA and not some far eastern country. I am taking orders for them now, a post dated cheque made out for the 23rd march is fine. Please ring me if you require on 07761 329149 any time. I appreciate any comments, criticisms or anything else, but hopefully it will be welcomed gladly as they have been obsolete now for years.

Hi John,
Yes they will, I have said it is being copied as per original and on the next photo's you will see the whole badge with the rolled round metal edge, backing plate and the studs welded onto the back. what do you think of it !

Am I talking to Ian or Ian's Dad? Either way that's a cracking result. As far as I'm concerned that's not so much advertising, more a service to the car and us owners! And certainly from my knowledge of the logistics and finance of getting these things done that's a very moderate price too! Anybody who disagree's - See Me Outside!!!

I have every respect for the results achieved by others on this post, but the time involved in doing them by floppy moulding off an original will only ever produce penny numbers before the victim with the skill either gets bored or runs out of hours in the day. And I'd guess a good third of surviving cars are in need of one!

Once you've recovered a bit of cash are you going to go on to do the boot mount badge properly?

Chris

My only question (at the moment) is are they UV light stabilised as here in NZ the UV is wickedly quick at destroying most plastics and discolouring resins.

Graeme

Hi Graeme,
that i do not know, i will find out and get back to you next week on that. Many thanks for the comments chris. I was considering having the boot badge done as per original, but the amount of boot mount kits that are about, I do not think it would be economically viable unfortunately.

Hi ghce,
sorry for the delay, but here is the answer to your question.

I use a resistant material that is highly polished and UV safe. It will have some measure of yellowing over a period of 15 - 20 years PROVIDED the item HAS
been exposed to constant sun. I have a Porsche emblem that i made 5 years ago that has been stored outside in all weathers ( direct sun, rain, heat, cold ) and it has only shown a 2.6% spectral degradation in clarity when examined ( you cannot note it with the naked eye ). It helps to have engineer friends in optics who can use the lab at night. I continue to test this same part and will see what the results are in 10 years time.
I should note that if any of your customers ever have a part that is yellowed in a short period of time I would instantly exchange it for a new one as the sample would be valuable to me for examination. I offer that for 5 years after purchase.

That is what has been quoted, the badges are made in california, so in answer to the question of heat, it does not get much hotter. New Zealand will be around the same temperature i guess.

I hope that answers and puts peoples mind to rest. also where else do you get a 5 year guarantee on something like this.

Once again i am open to any more questions you have.

Hopefully i should be able to post some pictures within the next 14 days of the final sample, for you all to see.

Re: Another bonnet badge, UV resistance

That's not really addressing the issue; California has an ozone layer; NZ often doesn't
Ambient temperature isn't that relevant to UV exposure. eg: NZ radio stations broadcast a "burn time" based on fair-skinned folk sitting on the beach with their shirts off; + *10 minutes exposure* is all you can take safely on a "bad" day; ie fall asleep on the beach for an hour or 2 with your arms, legs + back exposed, your next day will be spent in hospital ( and could likely be your last day ) A badge exposed on a vehicle that will sit outside without a cover in NZ.... will last more than 5 summers....

Hmm, if he will guarantee that, there are still scores of P6 Rovers in NZ

funny old world

I thought the were rare, but we now have 5 new bonnet badges on ebay.
wonder why

Nick T

I think you're spot on Nick T, I was talking about this on "Pilkie's Classic Carnuts" just the other day.

Seems like everyone is trying to shed some stock for the top price before Rover Classics comes in with a superb Repro which takes the bottom out of the NOS bonnet badge market!

Superb!

hi tokyop6b,
yes, my supplier as well as me will guarantee them for 5 years. as the saying goes ( put your money where your mouth is ) if you are in new zealand and would like to order one, or anybody else for that matter, i will sell you one and give you one to leave outside on the understanding it must be left outside in all weathers and we can do a long term test, if anybody is willing to do so, as you think the weather is that different. california gets temperatures upto 110 and 120 degrees.
