I am starting this thread for my dad and have no idea if he will continue it when Im back at school but here goes.

He has had this car for about 10 years it came with a 200bhp 3.5 engine with fast road cams and a four barrell holley
it all ready had the twin filler caps although one wasnt connected to anything and alot of the other work was also already done including the four pot jag calipers and vented discs and the 5speed box. It was rebuilt in 1992 i think and is built on a 2000 shell with the straight inner wings.
Once my dad bought it he lpg converted it and had to change the engine after several rebuilds he decided that it would be easier just to change the whole unit back to a more standard one out of a discovery at this point it was running on p5 rostyles it stayed like this until recently when he changed them for some sd1 alloys. this is where we are up to now so here are a few pics.

and now to the point of this thread we have aquired a donor car in the shape of this.

For one main reason

Its a 4.6 rpi engineering cross bolted block with high comp cylinder heads piper torquemax cams and green injector we think as the have a green band around them but please correct me if I am wrong also it has been chipped and set up on a rolling road.
We started it today starting with stripping the range rover and trying to decifer the endless amount of wiring.

If you want a bit more power out of that engine, then get a set of shortened intake trumpets - those look to be standard length. If you want to understand what I'm talking about Rimmers have some decent pictures to go with their kit - although I wouldn't buy it from them. http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID009130

Much more interesting than the engine swap - what are you going to do about the gearbox? A BorgWarner isn't going to like that through it....

The actual diff should survive the experience OK. What may not is the diff output flanges and the input shaft. Upgraded input shafts are available and I have a small number of new output flanges if you get stuck. If the engine goes much over 300 bhp then I'd go Sowens Jag route! But with the spec as described you shoud be OK.

Chris

there are no plans for the diff its only going to be around 240bhp we think but arn't sure. i dont think my dad wants any more power out of it but he may change his mind. the gearbox is an lt77 so with any hope it should be strong enough.
His plan for the intake manifold is to get the later banana type manifold from the 1999 and newer landrovers.
like this
IM000911.jpg

the range failed its pre mot check on two small holes in the inner wing and worn break disks then the gearbox lost drive on the way back from the mot centre but its not rotten.
On the shorter trumpet note (no pun intended) would it not be simple enough to shorten them myself? (i saw the price at rimmerbros)

Hello tolsen,

I may well be wrong, but can I ask..who told you that the Range Rover engine in the photos is a 4.6? I appreciate that the 4.6 was never fitted as standard to that model of Range Rover, so that may well be the reason the engine features a distributor and non crankshaft driven oil pump.

Using the "thor manifold" will mean using the Bosch Motronic 2.1 engine management system, coil packs and not the distributor to provide the spark. It will be an interesting project, so look forward to seeing how it goes!

Ron.

The engine is a 4.6 bought from rpi engineering as a ''short engine'' it was fitted with the so it has had the front end put on it from the RRs original 3.9, as it was a brand new engine the previous owner could make up his own engine number ( RPI4.6L and then his initials). I belive my dad has thought about the problems you have mensioned but i will show this too him later to clarify this. the idea behined the thor manifold was just to make the engine look a bit better but i think he has it all sorted in his head.

hi buddy nice thread your putting here. Im more interested in what jacking system you have in place as i have not seen that before. since it holds your RR i see that it will hold 1ton nae problem.

cheers
lewis

I think it is a 3ton scissor lift we got it from the guy we bought the brown spares rover fromit has little wheels so you can move it about but just had some concrete layed to make it easier.

I notice that your P6 has a (modern-ish) Northern Ireland registration number. Did you get it from Northern Ireland or did you transfer the plate onto it.

Regards

Colin

we transferd the plate off an 90s jeep cherokee we had actually, i cant remenber why but thats where it came from.
The 4.6 is almost out just needs four gearbox bolts out and craning but i guess that will stay like that untill im off school for summer.

so..... kinda left you all waiting here without updating and i appologise so a quick update the engine is out its been shot blasted painted new lpg injectors tave been fitted to the intake manifold and it is ready to be bolted the a gearbox, which is still in the spares car because it got to cold to get the motivation to do it and i started working so have less time to lend a hand so heres a few pics that i had on my lap top its all painted now with the rocker covers in gloss black.

and some lpg related ones
S1032391.jpg

if you can work it out this one shows how close the lpg injection hole is (the small one) and the petrol injector.
S1032388.jpg

these are the lpg injectors
S1032397.jpg

heres all the injectors on the painted manifold

then all together with the petrol ones and the fuel rail

andthe penum on. and thats how it is at the moment.

A very interesting post, Tolsen, as is the other one about your series 1.

Is that a pair of spots/fogs I can see in the lower intake panel on the series 1?

Good luck with all the work

Its been a long time since i last updated you on this as not much has been happening but but my dad has made another go at in during the last week and has got it on the ramp and got the tent up over it.
IMG00134-20110427-1953.jpg

and then started stripping bits off it,
IMG00133-20110427-1953.jpg

and after this weekenf has the engine and box out along with the heater,
IMG00150-20110502-1635.jpg

hes had the heater out as it wasnt working and had the heater out of the spares car but the matrix has gone in that too and rotted through the bottom of the casing.
hes also swapping the PAS from the brown car as the red one didnt have it which is causing problems with the wiring loom behined the dash (???? i didn't look so dont have a clue) so hes swapping the looms too.
