1972 Rover P6 3500- Rescued! (New Wheels)

Re: 1972 Rover P6 3500- Rescued! (It Begins)

Thanks guys! Some great news today:
My brother and a friend came along today to have a nosey. We decided to whizz the battery off my other car and stick it on the P6, just to see what would happen. All dash lights came on, guages stirred into life...... All looked promising. Then we decided to crank her over, just to see if she was siezed. Well she cranked over willingly, and after some cranking over and a few pumps of the throttle she coughed and spluttered into life!! :p
She sounded amazing! Even on 8 year old fuel she settled into a decent idle on choke, blasting almost a decades worth of crap out of the exhaust. We let her run until she was warm enough to come off the choke and she purred like a kitten. I was over the moon!
She happily ran from then on without any problem, and the only thing stopping me from taking her for a drive around the car park was the slightly iffy brakes which i'll be overhauling soon. So i'm going to change the oil, air filter and put the new leads on along with some new plugs (although part of me is thinking "if it aint broke...") and then as far as the engine goes she'll be sound.
A rad hose was leaking from a crack near the jubilee clip but I have a replacement hose which i'll fit next time i'm playing with it.
All in all, very pleased with this car! At this rate she could be ready for her MOT by the end of the month :D

Nothing quite like that sort of feeling is there?

Brilliant news :D

Lovely, makes me recall my own 'barn find', but my hybrid 5-speed conversion came with a molecular fusion of clutch disc and flywheel, the disc had to be chiselled off in chunks with the gearbox out. Not an issue with yours, though... Best of luck with the recommissioning :)

Re: 1972 Rover P6 3500- Rescued! (It Begins)

Thanks! :) I think if this was a manual I would have been playing with stuck clutches too, but as it stand i've just got stuck brakes to contend with which isn't so bad (apart from the rears, i've heard?).

Yes it is indeed the greatest feeling when they cough and splutter into life, brilliant! Goes from bieng a P6 shaped hunk of metal to a living breathing machine again, really motivating! :p

They look worse than they really are. Drop the diff down and away you go. Just 3 bolts! :)

Great news with the engine !

One thing with the sills, you need to get the outers off to get a good look at the middle sill section, this is usually where the rot is. Fingers crossed it's not too bad.

Keep us updated with the photos, will be great to see this car come back from how it is now, to a nice shiny new one !

Ooh, and forgot to say, 195/70/14's work quite well.

Re: 1972 Rover P6 3500- Rescued! (It's Alive!)

Ah okay, I thought the rot would most likely be near the ends but i'll have to whizz the sill cover off and have a proper look. No real problem if it's crusty there i'll just replace the whole shebang if neccesary. The floor looks in fine fettle both sides though so it shouldn't be too much of a horror show i'm hoping. Will definately keep th thread updated :)

Julian- Good grief, that 'Raymanboy' is certifiable! I'm not sure he's ever sold anything on Ebay ever with his rediculous prices and Bizzare descriptions.. I might see if he wants to buy my interior for £200 so he can 'double his money', then buy another interior for £50 off a normal person.

Come on get with it, buy them and put it down as expenses, nothing to it, haven't you read the papers

Well, a small update and a change of direction has been decided upon.
Firstly I drove the P6 for the first time (by which I mean, reversed it in my workshop carpark and drove it into a different parking space) and it was the first time I realised it has power steering.... Great!
I really should look closer under the bonnet in future!

Seconsly, i've decided to go with a much more period 70's street racer/gasser style for this car, which will involve some modifications.
The first thing to do was get some different wheels- I decided on those old favourites from that period, the Slot mag. The ones I picked up for mine are not really slot mags, they are infact steel 5 slot wheel made by Keystone. But they're perfect for what I want to do :)

^ Here are the fronts after a really good clean. Note the crossplys!

^ And here are the rears...... Yes, they are very wide!! A 'gasser' has wide rear wheels with the rear arch radiused to suit, and also a raised suspension height, especially at the front.

^ Here is a typical gasser. A gasser is basically a drag racing classification popular in the 60's/70's, largely unseen these days but have a hell of a presence when you do see one!

^ This is a rendering someone did for me so we could see what the P6 would look like in Gasser form. Looks great to me! I don't know how you guys feel about it but this forum seems very open-minded about modifying, and it will be another P6 on the roads and not rotting in a driveway :)

The Minilights are now surplus to requirements if anyone fancies them?

Thanks for reading!
