1971 3500 Auto

I must say I do really like this car, some of the "mistakes" are very very nice.
One query I have is why the marking of 3500 on the instrument cluster? the only logic I can think of is if your car was part of a fleet of p6''s 2000, 2200 and 3500 ie a Met car.

and welcome !

Graeme

Graeme,

Thanks Graeme, Good Morning to you.

A possibly met car eh? I've just checked the Registration Archive and YNJ 392J was first registered in East Sussex. Not far from London. With 'JJ' being the last of the Series One Rover P6's I seem to recall some of them had series 2 bits shoved on them to make them more saleable/modern not that that explains the 3500 on the instruments. However those that didn't sell may well have been offered to the Police. After all they didn't mind what front they had.

Hello & welcome Loopylouby.

Not many people can claim to own a movie star :) . I quite like the car. It has a very monochrome/clean look. You say that you had second thoughts when driving it home - was this due to problems with the car or just general second thoughts? Is this your first P6?

Hello again,

With the onset of winter and careful use/storage of my classic during this time I wonder if anyone had any tips for safe hibernation please. The barn I have is clean and dry and I've sealed and painted the floor. Is it worth investing in an Indoor Car Storage Carcoon? You hear so many stories of expensive spring start ups.

Regards, Louis

Fresh engine oil and completely new brake fluid and leave the hand brake off, well thats my wish list, really I think the least controllable factor is brakes seizing and even with new calipers and fresh fluid they can sill seize (rear ones seem to be the most at risk) as happened to mine after a full recondition and only 160 miles of use.

Graeme

Maybe its the photo...but something looks a bit odd with the bottom of the drivers door/sill area...and the sill to front quarter
Poor panel fit?
Just look remiss somehow.

Hello Louis .
Welcome , nice car ( as i said before you'd bought it ) Would be nice to see some pics of the engine bay as none in the advert . These old beasts don't take well to being laid up for long periods , if you can , better to keep it usable and give it a run at least once a fortnight , more often if poss , but you know your circumstances better than me , maybe not possible .
You'll get a better response saying hello in the Welcome section :D

Nice looking car :)

Sparky had the 3500 sticker on the instrument cluster and I did ask the previous owner what is was doing there. He replied that he had got one from a breaker, and it was on there when it arrived. So I agree with Chris, probably to distinguish between the 4 and 8 pots when on the shelf, although they are different enough not to bother - and they are a real pig to get off.

Hi Louis

Welcome to the forum.

I drive my P6 all year so I don't do laying-up :D My only comment would be to watch out for mice nesting in the seats etc, especially as it's in a barn. A couple of traps should do the trick.

Late carbs, alternator & bracket, and gearbox (BW65) so maybe that's why there weren't any underbonnet pics in the original ad.

Is that bad thing then? It seems to run and sound fine.

Personally I'd say they were all good things. Later carbs are better than early, same applies to the alternator, and the BW65 is far better than the BW35. (Unless you happen to make a living out of repairing them that is...)
A UK spec Series 1 shouldn't have the PAS either, but I wouldn't be without it.

If the engine number matches what's on the V5 then you've got nothing to worry about. The rest of the car is non standard in various ways, so the engine is no different. Apart from the upsidedown rear numberplate plinth and the Webasto I quite like the look of it.

That's good news indeed. Especially as I bought the car on a bit of a whim. I'd looked at so many disappointing relatively high priced P6's that when I saw this one I thought this is it. Trouble is later on as I have said earlier I felt I should have sought more advice.

Power steering is rare on a series 1 but I am told very late models had this luxury along with other series 2 options like HR Screen and round dials to get them sold. However I have no idea whether these things were retro fitted on this car.

I must sort that number plate plinth tomorrow and swap the front seats back in the hope they function as they should.

I'm not sure about the webesto either but its there and seems in good condition. No I haven't opened it yet

Your testicles will be forever grateful....

You know I jumped in that car on the test drive and I remember thinking; "What the hells going on!" I've never experienced this in a P6 before.
The salesman got in the other side at an angle and said. "I've got a bad back".

It's a ludicrous mistake...

Well I though it was an early series 2 with some series 1 bits bunged on it for styling reasons when it was restored!
Is fusebox in n/s glovebox?
Got a pic of the bonnet slam panel above the lights?
Is there a small square filled in cutout on the back of the boot floor?

I will look tomorrow. I did notice some fuses and cover rattling in the N/S glove box. But I will look.

Here's an image of YNJ 392J I found on the web pre 2007. Series 1?

Congratulations on your purchase, and welcome.

Strange co-incidence, but I own YNJ271J... which isn't even a Rover.

Hope you enjoy owning your P6 :)

Door handles and heated screen suggest early S2,hint of vinyl 1/4 panels as well!
Date of DVLA registration is 22/2/71.
The year of manufacture is 1971.
Last registered S1's were sept/oct 1970 iirc!
