1970 Rover 3500 - EMF

I cannot for the life of me understand why everyone goes to such trouble to do so much work to try and stop the tin worm in this way, the ammount of work that gets done is only a solution that lasts but a few years especially with the salt and extreme weather conditions that prevail in the UK, surely for just a little more work and albiet greater expense why not do a gavanising dip or zinc plate all the body parts and chassis, the sacrificial nature of the coating would mean no more rust ever again. I know finding a bath to accomodate the size of the chassis may be difficult to find but they do exist.
I once has an FB101 victor which had Zinc plated headlap surrounds, the paint was long gone on them and the raw metal exposed, I had that car for many yuears , it was never garaged but no sign of any corrosionon the plated parts.

Hi Graeme, there are a couple of reason why we spend hours in garages scraping paint off and then painting more on. There's only salt on the roads from about mid December until mid April when hardly anyone uses their classics anyway so this work will last a lot longer than it would have done if the car were used everyday.

There are companies in the UK who can acid dip a bodyshell and galvanise it afterwards, but it costs roughly twice the price of a fairly good P6 so it's only usually the exotica that gets this treatment. If money were no object, then I'd have it done, but as it amounts to several months wages, for me it's just not worth it.

A couple of months of weekends in the garage and about £80 of fancy paint on the base unit will see it lasting long enough for me.

In addition I use my car every day so I can't afford to have it off the road for too long. Besides it gives me something to do on the long dark cold winter nights. Going for the gold-plated (ok zinc-plated) option would probably have most people resting on their laurels and not inspecting their car quite as often as they did before.

Any documented proof of this? Theoretically the chemistry is sound but I'm always a sceptic.

I had a rush of blood to my head and I've just booked it in for the respray with Clive Annable - it's going to be real nice when he's done. Unfortunately though Brian, it's looking like EMF won't be at Beamish this year as a certain someone from the north who likes shiny P6's snook in front of me in the que!

It will give me more time to finish off the base unit and get it MOT'd though.

Thanks for the offer Brian, but I'll stick with the slot I've got at the end of April. I wouldn't want to mess Clive around and it means I can do more jobs on the base unit beforehand too.

Anyway, Adam can give us a lift to Beamish, so I should still be able to go.

Excellent news, your car will look the dogs bo@@ocks when its done, the base unit seems in exceptionally mint condition, very solid, hope all is well and keep up the goodwork :D

I do hope so, I'm deliberately trying to keep cool about it and not get my hopes too high yet, but I'm gradually getting more and more excited about it.

Hoping to skive off early today and get a head start on the weekend work.

you have a good enough reason to have your hopes built up,your car is rock solid and getting painted by the best painter on the planet,it has the basis to be one of the best around,

Is he really that good a painter ? What can he do that others can't ?

Yes... and no. He's a very good painter, but he's excellent at working on the P6 in particular, doing all the little things that make the difference to the finished product. In all fairness you can get a cheaper paint job, but when I want my mine done it won't go anywhere else.

I have heard good things about Clive, which is why he is now painting Sparky - a chap in the next street was doing it but he retired :(

He does know the P6 very well, he knows the dirt traps and what to do about them, etc

Time will tell

Richard
