Yellow headlights on my P6, would it work ?

Good morning,

Some oldtimer cars are equipped with yellow headlights, French cars are a good example. I also read that Triumph used yellow lights as a standard in the old days, at least they offered it as an option.

So..
I wonder how it would fit on my P6. Are there any members who did the same?
It does look more exclusive, after all the most cars carry white illumination .

It’s a bit scary to be honest, I did the same on my Jaguar about four years ago and he responded with a broken head gasket and a full engine rebuild at the end:hmm:

Have a great weekend,

Wilfred

Hi, It was at one time French regulation that headlights were yellow. Drivers that were going 'Sur le Continent' were required to equip their vehicles so. At the time, yellow plastic covers with a refractive contour were available, which provided the colour and right hand dipping pattern for people that didn't want to fork out for complete light units for a fortnights holiday. You could try a plastic film or wrap on your headlights to see if you like it. I did try it back in the day when I found some in a car I'd bought and it was a softer light but I didn't persevere with it.

Hmm, nice combination with the colour of the car, my Mexico Brown would also fit I think.
Either you like it or you don’t, there’s no in between.

It’s also safer they thought, when you drive in the fog for example or heavy rain, the reflection is much less, on the other hand traffic plates reflect better because of the yellow colour.
For me it would only be a cosmetic reason, I try to avoid bad weather as much as possible.

I will give it a try one of these days :thumb:

Do the lighting regulations in the Netherlands actually allow yellow lights

Hi, yes no problem.
Lights at the front can be either white or yellow. At the back only red is allowed, except for the return lights. They must be white. Indicator lights must be orange.

(We like rules that do not make any sense :))

Well, they would still work. However, my experience of them is that they are not as effective for actually seeing things as white lights. There is an often stated comment that they reduce glare in fog / rain but there is a counter-argument that there 'appears' to be less glare because there is actually a reduction in light output.

I have spoken to some 'older' French drivers who have used both the old yellow lights and the later 90s-onwards white. They say white is much better.

However, yellow will certainly look different.

Different for sure, you’re right.
You can’t miss a car with yellow headlights, I associate it with an oldtimer car.

I will change them tomorrow I think and see how it looks, that’s the only way to find out ;)

To be continued..

End of experiment, I thought I could use conventional H4 halogen bulbs, but my P6 has got a combined reflector/bulb instead. Not sure if that’s common on a P6, but I will just leave it as it is.

Anyway, it’s a nice discussion.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend,

Wilfred

Yep, those are called sealed beam headlights. Standard on P6’s

Hello Wilfried, you can swap the sealed beams for others without any problems and yellow lights will fit in there.
Have a look here, I offer them. They are from the P6.
Greetings Bernd

Good evening,

I haven’t had time yet to properly install the yellow lights, I’m afraid. My other oldtimer needs some serious attention to get it past the MOT. Not dramatic but the rules are much stricter now. Also, I’m in the UK this week to visit a motor car company in Crewe
Which is nice

Cheers,

Wilfred

They do look really nice, especially with the car being Mexico Brown.
How does the brightness at night compare to the white headlights?

best, marco.

Hi Marco,

It’s the reflection on white surfaces that makes the difference I noticed, trafic plates and white marks on the road for example.

You’re right that it suits the color of the car, at least I think so too. And it’s also typical for an Oldtimer car.

Have a nice evening,

Wilfred
