Wiper delay

At the risk of asking something that has been covered a million times already.... Delay? Really? So I need foam? Where?

Thanks

J

You should find a shite plastic knob on the left hand side of the steering column shroud; that controls the amount of delay when the wiper switch is rotated anti clockwise from the off position. The white knob is pneunatic not electrical and you'll find the pneumatic governor above and slightly to one side of the wiper motor.

Chris, I prefer your description.... Coz as equipment goes that has to be the most mickey mouse looking part of the whole interior of a p6!

.....but how long did it take you to figure what it was when you found it......?

Cheers Mr K, definitive answer ......... 2-15 seconds, it will bug me so thats it now.......different foam to try

No matter what foam I use I can't get any longer delay than 5 seconds. So now thinking the tube from the delay to the switch may have a pin hole or small split in it. How do you get access to the white switch on the steering column ? Does the shroud have to come apart ? I am leaving the old tube in, just going to run a new one.

There's a join in the vac pipe, presumably so you can remove the column without taking the nacelle off to disconnect it at the switch, so I'd look there first, it's up under the dash close to the column support.

Remove the steering wheel and then you can dismantle the nacelle to get at the switch. Don't remove the nut completely when pulling off the wheel. Remove the nut, remove the shakeproof washer, then screw the nut back on. Cosmetic Dentistry is expensive these days.

Before you do all that, put you finger over the recess and seal where the foam goes to see if the delay gets any longer. This will tell you if the delay membrane is good or not.

Paul, to late I'm afraid, left the old tubing in and ran new from delay to the section Harvey said under the steering column, made no difference. So removed steering wheel and put new tubing to the switch and no difference. At least it's ruled out the tubing. So bit late now and too dark but it's your idea next Paul. Failing their then the 5 second delay it will be

Did do that Willy, don't know why I did but whenever I remove anything it is marked or photo taken, good advice though.

Yesterday I reacquainted myself with the vacuum delay on the v8.

I had dabbled with it but eventually took the decker off and removed it from the car.

After reading your thread I was a tad confused because I previously fixed one with some insulating tape to cover the sponge bit.

Like test rider says put a finger over the bit where the foam goes, and also pull the pipe off and put a finger over the end of the vac unit. push the plunger in and see if it stays in. gently life a finger off if it stayed and make sure it comes all the way out. Do this without the motor running.

I eventually found that the unit was duff as the electrical part was not up to it and swapped it with my spare.

Cleaned greased and tested it ot be ok. with plenty delay. as you are getting a delay it must work just not well enough. has the clips rusted or fallen off? the unit it actually 2 part with the diaphragam inside it is possible you have a leak here.
